T-Mobile Streams YouTube WITHOUT USING DATA!

I just recently switched to T-Mobile and had to turn off that Binge shit. Not sure how it exactly controls your data but I'm pretty sure once it recognizes that you're playing video, it will throttle your data speeds down to whatever it deemed necessary for 480p video.

 

I was trying to watch 720p YouTube videos but it keep buffering. Strange, as I did a speed test registering a whopping 30mbps download which is more than plenty for 720p video. Then I realized that BingeOn was on and so I turned it off and voila, no more buffering.

 

If you don't mind 480p then BingeOn is great for you. Otherwise, its almost an annoying feature.

Looking at my 3 GB data cap, Binge On is a decent enough deal even with 480P video, though less buffering would be nice. 

 

That said, this is in strong conflict with Network Nuetrality. Yes, this happens to benefit the customer, however, "Deal with the Devil" comes to mind here.

Yeah, I'll admit it's not the best. I can very easily tell the difference between 480p and 720p on my phone. However, 480p on a phone isn't terrible. I'd say it's comparable to 720p on a 20"-24" monitor.

 

I would find it useful for trips or rides where you want to do it for extended times and don't want the data usage that comes with long sessions of streaming, but I'd turn it off for short sessions that I'd prefer the quality of 720p in.

 

I just wish there was an easier way to toggle it on and off without having to login to your account. Maybe if there was an app where you just log in once and then it puts the toggle front and center when you open the app so it's quick and easy to toggle it.

They cover 97% of the population Verizon does. They've more than doubled their LTE coverage in the last year and are still expanding a ton to try and cover even remote areas now too. It used to suck in 2014 and before. It's quite good now.

tmobie is 2nd bar none in cerritos ca. verison is 1st.

so, compared to EVERTHING else, sprint, at8t, metropcs, yeah, its much better, but its still bad.

Not sure how it is in Hong Kong, but in the US (and most of the other countries I know of) it goes like this:

Interlaced 640x480 (or lower) = SD

Progressive 640x480 (or higher but not 1280x720) = EDTV

 

That's how it is defined by the consumer electronics association. You can read more about it here, here and here. The term never seem to have caught on though.

i have a friend with t mobile and another with virgin mobile which uses t mobile towers and as soon as they step inside the school building they have either 3g or no connection while i still have 4g with sprint

I mean, it's good that they offer the option to watch YT without taking anything away from their monthly data quantity, but it shouldn't be necessary in the first place.

When it comes to cellular connections, it's not greed that makes ISPs to set data caps. It's just that there is a very limited amount of spectrum and everyone has to share it. Setting data caps so that users don't spend their entire day downloading stuff is a pretty convenient way to make sure the network don't get congested. The other alternative would be to throttle speeds, but that's not good either.

However, making sure people can stream video all day is better in what way exactly...? If someone streams 50GB of youtube videos, how does it stress the network less than if he downloads 50GB of games?
