Short Term

  • Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Core (Picking up at a local Fry's Electronics near me. It's on back-order)
  • Keyboard: Corsair K70 2016 Cherry MX Brown keyboard

 

Mid-term

  • Actually build my rig: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/X3YjmG
  • Overclock CPU so it performs relatively close to the Extreme Edition CPUs and Xeons for content creation and for gaming.
  • Custom-sleeved cables from either Singularity Computers or CableMod (More likely Singularity Computers)
  • Grab either an Asus ROG Swift PG27AQ or Acer Predator XB271HK (Both are the same, but one will have better warranty and services over the other. What do you think?)

Long Term

No short term upgrade plans, but the distant future plans are (distant on a computer tech time frame):

 

i7-8700k on Z370 platform, assuming Intel follows that naming convention.

32GB DDR4

GTX1180 Ti, again assuming that Nvidia names it as such. Unless Pascal ends up being a huge leap in performance, in which case GTX1080 Ti.

Perhaps a shiny new case to go along with all the techie goodness.

 

I would really like AMD to come out with a GPU that outperforms GTX__80 Ti cards. Perhaps even a beefy CPU that competes with Intel on the higher end. I would love to build an AMD system.

Short Term: 

- possibly a new case; don't strictly need one, but I've got an itch to upgrade something and my Antec 300 is a good candidate.  Leading candidate at the moment is the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M, but I'm waiting to see what happens to it price and feature wise with the introduction of the Eclipse.  Great case already, but a few minor issues I'd love to see fixed before buying.

I'll do 2 lists for each of my 2 computers.

 

First, for my desktop PC...
 

Short term

  • GPU: GT 720, 730, 740 or GTX 750 Ti (if I can't resolve some crash issues I'm having with the HD 4600 iGPU)
  • HDD: 5TB WD Red, or a 6TB NAS HDD, maybe 2 or 3

Medium term

  • GPU: GTX 1070 (or maybe a 970 if I skip the 700 series and Pascal/Polaris isn't enough of a jump in performance/watt & overall performance)
  • SSD: PCI Express 64GB or 128GB to use as swap space
  • Monitor: 4K

Long term (new PC, after current one is ~7-10 years old?)

  • CPU: i7-(9/10)???(K/X)
  • RAM: 256+GB DDR5 
  • GPU: GTX (13/14/15)(7/8)0 (Ti) (x2)
  • HDD: unknown but possibly at least 20-32TB worth
  • Monitor: 5K, 6K or 8K?
  • Mobo with DDR5, USB 5, PCI-Express 5, SATA 5, or similar equivalents, or newer

 

 

Now, for my laptop:

 

Short term (next few months)

  • RAM: another 8GB stick of G.Skill DDR3-2133 SODIMM (same model it currently has)
  • SSD: 250GB SSD, Samsung 850 EVO or Crucial MX200
  • OS: Windows 7 Professional
  • HDD: (somewhat later) a 2nd 2TB Seagate M9T when needed, or higher capacity if available and gets good reviews

Medium term (after 2-3 years)

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K or 8770K (whatever is the last i7-K (Kaby Lake or Cannonlake) to go on LGA 1151, would buy when on sale for $250 @ Microcenter or $300 @ Newegg)
  • RAM: 64GB (4x 16GB sticks) DDR4-2133 or 2400 SODIMM
  • SSD: 2x Samsung SM951 512GB or 1TB PCI-Express M.2 SSD
  • GPU: nVidia GTX 12(7/8)0M or 13(7/8)0M (maybe)
  • HDD: a 2nd 2TB Seagate M9T when needed, or higher capacity if available and gets good reviews

Long term (new laptop, after 5-8+ years, or 10+ if I can stretch that long)

  • mostly TBD

 

Of course, considering some of my outlook is upwards of 10 years into the future, it is subject to change; also I'm sure I may have forgotten a few things.

Even though compared to many of the up to date high-end rigs mine can probably be considered as 'old', I am currently quite fond of it. Quiet, sufficient power, works. So:

 

Short Term:

- another keyboard: regularly push my mouse against the side of my  Black Widow, so I'll go for 80% / TKL mechanical with MX Browns, Backlight might be nice too. Either going for a CM Rapid or wait for their RGB model to come out (teased at CES) (Other do you guys have other options that are availlable in germany? :P (Ducky isn't unfortunately...)

-another pair of headphones, closed ones for now, also suitable for on-the-go use. Probably a pair of Beyerdynamics Custom One Pro

 

Mid Term

- more storage SSD 128 and datagrave 2TB are going to run out some time this year.

 

Long Term

- change to whatever CPU architecture appears suitable at time (probably early / mid 2017)

- second 970 for SLI

- new case for improved thermals

By the end of the year, I hope to get something like a 3440x1440 monitor and maybe a new graphics card that can max out gaming at that resolution and support 2 1080p monitor for reading usage.
