Night Fury-£1000-[Complete]

Charcoal_

NIGHT FURY"The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself..."

Inspired by How to Train your Dragon's Toothless, a powerful, silent and deadly dragon, my setup will be geared towards quiet operation, power and plain good looks. With a budget of £990 it's not wildly impressive or powerful but it's good enough for me to game on! (BTW, for anyone who mentions it, no fury GPU, I'm just too cheap. I do have HyperX Fury ram though...)

Status: Done! All of your picture are in "The Build".

Previous Build:

Spoiler

It was Novatech prebuilt, AMD quad-core CPU at 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HHD, AMD Radeon HD 6570. It was a pretty bad setup, but it had a secret! It was free, along with the desk, chair, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Pretty cool, huh? I wanted an upgrade so started saving near the end of 2014, then it was now! It's gonna be a massive difference!

The Build:

Spoiler

22/1/16:

DSCF6872_zpslilighna.jpg

Ignore the puzzle, there's nowhere else it will fit in the house...

BeQuiet's coolers are an arse to install... There was the issue that beQuiet has preapplied thermal paste and I have nothing to get it off so no MX-4 for my PC.

DSCF6874_zpsnzxdgtjw.jpg

The H230 it a decent size but damn the finger prints!

DSCF6877_zpsrsetypek.jpg

No major issues with getting the motherboard assembly in.

DSCF6883_zpsvwsbs1e9.jpg

So cabling was a bit tricky, the H230 has no grommet in the top left where the CPU connector goes...

DSCF6875_zpsespg0y4v.jpg

Turns out I bought 140mm fans. The H230 only supports 120mm...

DSCF6881_zps9eplsmyx.jpg

Cable management was... tricky. We got it better than this but there's still a bulge in the panel.

DSCF6891_zps3ir5wwzw.jpg

The Wires for the LEDs had to come out of a PCI expansion slot. This will eventually get a modified PCI slot cover but for now it'll have to do.

DSCF6890_zpslopfe7al.jpg

It all works! That make me happy!

DSCF6899_zpsmt8pzaeq.jpg

Finished, hardware wise.

23/1/16:Installed Windows 8.1 Pro off of my old laptop with a USB, that took ages to create the boot media. Took about an hour in total since my laptops so bad. Drivers for motherboard came off the DVD onto the same USB but this time I used my mum's laptop. Took about half an hour. Then moved it to my desk, plugged it all in and upgraded to Windows 10. All the software downloaded and I was done...

The Issues:

Spoiler

14/1/16:I've got a dead pixel. It's not annoying playing at 20fps with my old PC but static images or Youtube videos with plain colours just get on my nerves! I'm not sure yet but EBuyer may not need me to send back the first monitor to get a new one. I might have a dual screen setup!

20/1/16:I was just testing for ground sources near my build area and found that the two ends of my static-strap aren't connected. So yeah!

21/1/16: Got some news with the monitor. I've been referred to Acer so that they can talk me though "fixing it". We all know how simple it is to fix a dead pixel with a tech. helpline! At least we're making progress...

22/1/16: So it turns out that the H230 doesn't support 140mm fans...

DSCF6875_zpsespg0y4v.jpg

Updates:

Spoiler

Thanks to IKEA I managed to get this desk for £13.

WP_20160124_002_zpsvlmsrrvz.jpg

OK. I'm sending the monitor off to Acer but have to choose a temporary one... My previous 5:4 monitor would've been fine! But the R9 390 doesn't have VGA connectivity. So, I've ended up with this, my old 720p bedroom TV. Its tiny!WP_20160126_002_zpsbohhuzif.jpg

Back with the  normal monitor, Ebuyer should be replacing it soon.

Later:

Monnitor is back, fans are in, and such. Over-clocked to 4.4GHz!

Todo:

Spoiler

Short Term:

  • New Desk
  • Cable Manage New Desk
  • New Keyboad
  • New Mouse

  • Better Fans
  • Overclock
  • Better Cable Management
  • Minor Case Mods

Long Term (AKA-Never):

Please get a better PSU that this is not the best. Even consider getting a 700W.

You can overclock non "k" series CPU with AsRock Z170 motherboards! So yeah! :)

Get the Windows 8 Pro off of Reddit/Softwareswap for $20 and upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free.

Changed Toshiba drive to WD Blue. Not that it's bad. But the WD one is reliable and good! :)

Definitely worth. Throw in a Hyper 212 evo later and you are good to go with overclocking that CPU! :)

You can overclock non "k" series CPU with AsRock Z170 motherboards! So yeah! :)

Not through the multiplier though. Non - K processors are overclocked through the BCLK. Some stability issues can occur using BCLK to overclock.

Would take multi over BCLK OC any day imo.

But for the money, it's much better option. It's gonna be like more to 300 Mhz in difference I guess if through K series CPU.

Me too. I agree with ur point. I would take "K" CPUs over BCLK. But for budget gamers, Overclocking CPU is not gonna make much of a difference.

The red-black aesthetic is a bit too common for me. There will be green underlighting!

Bit a change in the spec. I'll probably be able to get a 6600K to avoid BCLK issues.

Sorry... But with a £1000 computer you can't really have a Fury. That'd be half the budget... I still want one though... :(
