Experiences with non-techies

Then I'm also digging myself into my own pit: never done backups, hard drives are 4+ years old, one SSD died, still haven't learnt my lesson.

And yes, I also like to live dangerously...

I have some files backed up on several different drives if I deem them important enough but overall most of my files are only in one location.

Your like Ubisoft then...

Your just digging your own grave, and you know it too.  That makes it even worse.

I lost 3 hard drives before I started doing backups lol.

well...  I guess thats fine.  If people don't wanna backup I couldn't give a crap.   The only thing I give a crap about is when people don't understand the risks involved in not backing up but they still don't backup anyway.

Things like

- my boss secretary from the office which chooses laptops and external monitors of the same brand just because they're meant to be together  (truth is the OEM offers better support package if all the products are from them, including support)

- my room mate girlfriend which chosen a Sony Vaio netbook (regardless of other models with more performance were available) just because it was pink and the power button flashes green  :D (still not saying that it was bad looking - it was actually the single quality of it. Too bad Sony ditched the Vaio series now)

- my mum who never understood how to put a program in the taskbar (she always has so many stuff running on her desktop and when I ask her on the phone to just put some of them in the taskbar she tells me: what? how do I take them?) She now has a decent i5 laptop which runs all her apps perfectly.

- my dad who always clicks on the Antivirus recommendations (which I personally hate). The more I tell him he does not need to pay 20% less for an option to optimize his computer when I do it for him regularly and for free. (Why? It's a promotion isn't it).

It's all those little things that matter when marketing a product. It's what makes Apple be as popular as it is now, how OEM companies make tons of money from companies and others that scam people without knowledge by giving up promotions they do not need.

Sometimes I think that they are better off with a tablet or a phone. Much easier to use and to be honest not all people needed a PC to begin with.

I was talking to my dad about installing Linux on a chromebook we have:

Me: Why don't you install Linux on it? Then you can sync your iPhone to it when I'm gone.

Dad: You can't change the operating system

Me: Why?

Dad: Because it doesn't have a processor.

Me: wat

....

Me: Yes it does dad

Dad: And it only has 128 kilobytes of memory as well

Me: wat

At least my dad listens to me and I managed to explain it all to him. It was the way he said it so confidently that almost made me wet myself laughing.

I have already sinned I was at best buy and I saw a old couple at the dumb stupid geeksquad desk. In the end they had there brightness all the way down but they tried to get them to get a new laptop. They (the old couple) where looking at the screen with a flashlight to see it. :( I felt so bad for them.(the old couple) But then one of the geeksquad employees runs over when the person helping them isn't looking and pressed the brightness button and fixed it.  :D I bet they fired him though :(

Edit: Last face was a smile on accident. ;-;

THEN WHAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF GEEK SQUAD? If they get fired for helping, what's the whole damn fucking point of fucking Geek Squad?

Since I don't want to be like Ubisoft, is there an easy way to have my system do nightly backups without me having to help it along? Keep in mind that I am highly lethargic.

Off Topic:

Speaking of Ubisoft, I was in Montreal recently. It's a nice town but tries to hard to stay French and also be a "world city."

Probably for the best macs are super easy to use and pretty dummy proof. But of course pretty expensive.

You know, games can't use all the 12 cores of Xeons, maybe you should download an Haswell-E i7 instead.

My mum has trouble with her macbook air... And on the "family iMac" she somehow got a few viruses on there. Are you sure those two statements are correct?

While walking down the hallway one of the teachers grabbed my attention

Teacher: So let me ask you a question.
Me: Yes
Teacher: I saved a file on My Computer, as in I opened the C-drive, made a folder and saved it in the folder yesterday afternoon.
Me: Ok... alright.....
Teacher: When I came back to open the file this morning the folder and file were both gone.
Me: That's a bit strange.
Teacher: Exactly, and I know I saved it there.
Me: And you're totally sure it was your C-Drive? Maybe you save it on a Floppy or something (this was over a decade ago).
Teacher: Yeah, I got home, sat in front of my computer and saved the file in "My Computer".  Got to campus, logged in, went to "My Computer" and it's not there.

I spent the next hour explaining to him that "My Computer" wasn't really his computer in a global aspect, but more a less a central hub for that specific computer.  I further went on to explain that "My Computer" was never really the best name for the physical computer, but more or less JUST "Computer".

So now whenever I'm explaining to someone how to navigate their computer, When I said "Click on 'My Computer'" I pause and chuckle to myself, especially now since they've renamed it to simply "Computer"

That's probably the reason why MS changed it to Computer in the 6 kernel.
