Experiences with non-techies

So yesterday I was at my grandfather's house, I decided to go on his laptop to simply browse BVEstation.com and see some updates. He saw me just on his computer, right past logging in, and screamed at me, saying that I would mess up his computer and then it would revert to English (it's in Chinese.) Me=FACEPALM

Just before he yelled at me, I realized that his computer was SO FUCKED UP that I couldn't use if even if I wanted to. He doesn't read English and parts of the OS are in English, so he clicks on random shit like ads and weird things like that. It's a touchscreen Haswell Pentium laptop with 4GB of RAM and Windows 8, the poor thing is so messed up that you can't even type on the keyboard, if you do some virus on it will just make an annoying "ding" sound. When I opened it, there was some YouTube video with Chinese characters (I don't read Chinese BTW) and some English, the English part said "Wet Nurse- [insert Chinese here]. One time before that there was a random ad for "Why Men Watch Porn." I have gave up on that laptop.

Yeah. One of my moms friends is really nosey. And he clicks every ad. Eventually till he got infected with ransomware. Some of his files got encrypted, luckily his computer blue screened right as the virus ran so only 2 files were encrypted. Now he know... Never click on ads.

I was shopping for a new backpack today and I noticed many of them were marketed as being "tech friendly". No real surprises there, as technology is becoming engrained in our schools. Some of them even said directly on the tag what size laptops they support. I was looking through them when something on the Adidas tag made me pause:

Thats not as bad as my cousin who has to use an IPad for school. They don't even have the option for an android tablet. She must use a IPad.

So just few minutes ago my mother asked immediate help while I was playing a multiplayer game (Payday 2), and I came over, and she said that the toilet seat needs to be put to place again (it never stays more than couple of days, after that time it comes loose). And she's basically expecting me to get the seat locked perfectly to the toilet, and that seat doesn't even fit at all. Then she started complaining how I know jack sh*t about any modern technology... Like, the f***? Not so tech related, but... That last sentence... Without me they (mother and sister) would be stuck with just one functional Windows XP laptop (really slow), and maybe few computers they wouldn't even get to work, mind you.

The scam part was when the geek squad charged her $200 to remove 1 single virus when i could have done it for free with Malwarebytes

Anyway, I go over to their mansion. And they have antiques, gold plates everywhere, a diamond chandelier.. But... an old $200 computer running XP... its so slow they can't even read emails on it. So, I go over and I'm like "well, I'll take a look at it" and I go and boot it up, after 20 minutes of booting im at the desktop. I see their hard drive has I kid you not less than 1GB left. So I decide to open up disk cleanup, but NO. He says "thats a virus, it ruins your computer! Don't open it!" He bloody knows I work for AVG, so why the hell would I run a virus!?!? Anyways, when he was out once. I asked my grandmother if I could go on it, she said "sure"

Oh, and I found he didn't want me to run cleanup because he kept his porn folder in the recycle bin so my grandmother couldn't find it.

So I went on it, and I'm not kidding, theres a 20GB porn folder, and it turns out they CAN email, and I see emails to all these kinds of women. I knew my step grandfather would beat me until I had more bruises than skin if I told her, so I didn't. Hes a horrible, mean womanizer.

So how do they enforce iPad purchases? What if the child's family can't afford an iPad? What if you already know android tabs are far superior and that money should be spent on a good tablet?

What are the iPads used for? If the school's too poor for a computer lab, should they even try their hand at something like this?
