PC for my friend's 18th (with pictures) [COMPLETE]

MrTomnus

Hey everybody! This is my second buildlog on the forum, as well as the second PC build I have done. I’m afraid this is nothing special - there’s no fancy watercooling or modding going on here. That’s not the purpose of this build, as much as I would love it to be! This build is for great performance at a great price. If you’d like to see some pictures, keep scrolling - I’ll just give a bit of background on the reasons behind this build.

INTRO

So, first of all - this isn’t a computer for myself. It’s actually for my friend. We’ve been friends for a long time now, and his 18th birthday is coming up. At the beginning of this year I built my first computer and it was one of the most rewarding, painful and enjoyable experiences. Since that time, I’ve been using my PC while my friend has been playing games on an Xbox 360. The first game we played together was, in fact, Runescape. He was playing it on a 4 year old notebook that has awful integrated graphics, while at the time I was on my MacBook. It was great fun, and since then we’ve played Borderlands 2 together, as well as Battlefield 3. The latter is the game that has encouraged me to build this computer for him. I’ve played BF3 on his laptop, and it is complete poo. Seriously. He’s playing at 800x600, minimum details and can just scrape 15fps. Thankfully, the thing he does best is sniping, which is the one thing that is doable on that machine. It’s a far stretch from my PC, which cranks out 100+ fps at 1080p ultra settings! I’ve let him play on my machine, and the look on his face is priceless :) He’s not a huge techie but he appreciates great looking graphics, and while he can tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, he doesn’t quite know what it means. I’m teaching him everything slowly :D

I thought he deserved much better than that, so I decided I should build him a computer. Then I also won’t get death threats shouted at me down the mic on Skype when his PC black screens :)

PARTS LIST

Like I said, this is a budget build, so I’ve tried to cut the cost down while also allowing the PC to last a long time (as my friend is going to a different uni I won’t be able to help with any problems all the time. But nothing’s going to go wrong with it, because I’m building it ;)).

I've been buying things behind his back at the moment, and he doesn't have a clue :P I've been talking to his parents about the cost, and they've agreed to help me pay. I'm paying for his GPU, and his family are able to cover the rest. To save on cost, I'm going to be recycling the HDD in his laptop until he can buy himself a 1TB drive. That's the only part that's worth salvaging to be honest...

So far I have the GPU, and the monitor is arriving today. At the moment I have exams, so I can’t do much with the parts. I’ll be ordering the other parts after the last day of exams, which is on Monday. My friend has finished his exams already, which sucks :( But when the monitor arrives, I’ll have to open it up to check everything is okay. And maybe I’ll give myself dual monitors for a little while

For now, here are some glamour shots of the parts I do have. The build should be ready by the end of next week.

--As I was typing this, the monitor arrived! So there are pictures of that too now :)--

The new monitor, on the right. It's a TN panel and the colours don't quite match my IPS but I've tried to get them as accurate as possible. Also, having 2 monitors is AWESOME

THE BUILD

Here are all the parts used in the build:

14309572549_39d1df15b3_b.jpg

So everything is done now! It took well over 6 hours to get everything sorted. Having two people to work on a build is nice, but it can slow things down a bit. For contrast, it took me two hours to get my first PC build set up and finished.

Luckily, everything arrived on time! Just as I was about to drive to my friend's house to build the PC, the delivery man came with the 1TB hard drive. My friend was pretty excited to see everything turn up, and soon after we got started on the build!

I spent a few minutes going through with him why I picked the parts I did, what they were for etc. I want him to know how his PC works so he can attempt to solve a problem himself, should I not be around. Although his next port of call, should that happen, is this forum :) After that, we got to putting everything together!

14520359683_492b57ea79_b.jpg

We had just installed the CPU here. My friend thought I'd broken the motherboard when the socket safety cap popped off like it should when the CPU is properly installed - it was pretty funny :)

14498940414_9de4419128_b.jpg

This is the RAM. Actually looks quite nice!

At this point we did a test boot to check it worked. The fan started turning but after that there was nothing. I got a bit worried... Then I realised I'd forgotten to plug the CPU power connector in  <_< It's always the simple things you forget... After that it was working fine!

14477136276_3dc7a65578_b.jpg

We had a short break and my friend was trying to take pictures with my DSLR. This is one he took (the rest are a lot like this)

14499063942_8d271fdec0_b.jpg

And this is one I took  :P

The rest of the build process went well. We spent a lot of time doing cable management, as the case is designed for MITX boards and was unforgiving in terms of cable management. It was a two man job trying to get the right side panel on, if you know what I mean :D I tried to involve my friend as much as possible, but I think he was slightly worried he'd break something; he put screws in here and there and I let him put the GPU and RAM in. I think he enjoyed it!

So after that it was time to take the PC up to his room and set it up! We spent ages clearing his desk, and cleaning the area around it. We got some wooden planks to put the PC on to get the airflow to the PSU right. His case stays colder than mine! Once that was done, we started the Windows installation. Everything went smoothly! After that, it was update time... With his 6Mb/s connection, that took a LOOOONG time... It was the most time consuming part. We had some food, walked his dog then came back.

I installed all the major programs on it. But the first thing he wanted to do was play some Runescape :P He was very happy with the performance he was getting! I also told him he could record his gameplay with OBS and QuickSync and immediately he wanted me to sort that out! Once that was done, everything was set up and ready to go! Here's the finished build:

14500243425_7888aed16b_b.jpg

--More pictures, because people asked for them! Sorry it's been a while, I haven't had my camera at my friend's house for a while--

14609237011_a4bc4a8c47_b.jpg

14609227841_317a46dfce_b.jpg

I know the cable management isn't brilliant, but this case was so hard to build in because of the size. And the second PCI-e adapter would only fit if clipped in from the front. You don't want to see what's on the other side...

But it's the temps that matter anyway and his PC stays pretty nice and cool the way it is :)

14610386264_63c1ca8b96_b.jpg

You're hopefully reading this, so I wanted to say happy birthday Tom! Enjoy your new PC, and thanks for getting into PC gaming so I now have someone to play with  :)

Man,what a good friend you are.. :) Your friend is lucky to have you as his mate.

If you havent bought that ssd yet,may I suggest you get a different one. There has been talks of Kinston using subpar components in their V300 ssd and they don't quite achieve the rated speed as advertised.

Edit:spend 4 quid more and get this instead http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/sandisk-internal-hard-drive-sdssdhp128gg25

Welcome to the world of two monitors.

Thank you :) Although I won't be in it for long, as the build will be done in a week. I'm definitely buying a second one for myslef as soon as I have the chance!

Hahaha, thank you :)

Oh, I didn't know that about the SSD... It's funny because that's the one I have in my rig, and I picked it because I find it quite reliable. I'll look into other options and see if I can find another alternative, but that was the best looking 120GB drive I could find for the price. Thank you for the suggestion, it looks good!

@MrTomnus I'm following this thread as I find what you're doing is real nice. I must ask though, is there any reason why you didn't go for an IPS display for your friend? You can get the Acer H226HQLbid IPS monitor for pretty cheap (http://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009484&cm_re=H226HLbid-_-24-009-484-_-Product).

Anyway, good work mate. :D

Aw, thank you :) One of the reasons why I didn't go for IPS was because I knew my friend wouldn't notice a big difference between that and TN. Also, cost was an issue. While the monitor you suggested is cheap, the shipping cost makes it more expensive than the monitor I bought. If cost wasn't a problem I would have got him the same monitor I got myself :)

Thank you for subbing though!

UPDATE TIME!

I'm building the PC today! I think the best part about having a custom PC is being able to build it, so I've told my friend about it a few days ago. He's really looking forward to helping out with the build and I can't wait to show him the glorious light of GabeN and the PCmasterrace!

Here it all is:

The PC will be built in the next few hours! Stay tuned!

@MrTomnus, great build mate! I'm glad your friend is happy. That i5 4570 and AMD R 270 GPU was a great combination to buy for a budget build. You seem to really know your stuff mate. Good on ya! :D

Would it be possible to take a photo from the front of the desk a fair way back so that we can see the whole build? You can't really see your masterpiece very well from that angle. :)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

@MrTomnus

Great job on the building the computer you two! It looks great! :D

And I would like to know the same thing as Geekazoid. Is it possible to get a shot from a different angle? :)

You might be best to tag him incase he isn't following his own thread. He probably is but it's still idea to do so anyway. ;)
