Worst Tech mistake you have ever made?

Mitch

Back when I was 11 ( I'm 16 just now) I tried upgrading my mother's computer's RAM, I was just getting interested in computers and wasn't really sure but I turned it off, unplugged the power cord, etc... Well I took one RAM stick out and then tried the other. It was stuck. I pulled and I pulled and ripped the dim slot off the mobo. Turns out I only undid one side. Luckily there was 4 slots and I only need two, but lesson learned. If it doesn't work with a little effort, check you've not done something stupid before doing something really stupid.

Which makes it somewhat important, i hate dust in my case. I'm lazy and if my case can hold the dust out that's a really good thing! :D

It's not a life or death situation if you happen to not use it. But yes, dust is not a good thing. In fact, I have to clean out my rig on the floor.

Prepare for the most stupid thing you've ever heard.

This was back when I was fairly new at computers. I had just got a new motherboard, and I moved everything from an old HP case to a case that my dad had sitting around. Everything was in, but it wouldn't work, or so I thought. I had plugged the monitor cable into the motherboard input instead of the graphics card. .-.

I had turned it on and off over and over, tinkering and then starting it up, to no prevail. I go to unplug everything to look at it closer, and I see another monitor input where the graphics card is. Long story short, I plugged it in, turned it on, and it worked, I just had to reinstall my os. Talk about a blonde moment. xP

I helped a family member of mine to upgrade his PC - bought him a new Graphics Card and installed it, in the end I put the HDMI plug into the Motherboard instead of the new Video Card... (Do motherboards even come with HDMI?) anyway, it was in the wrong port so I called my brother and asked what I could have messed up, my nephew was all sad that it was broken and stuff, so my brother said, "Is it in the proper HDMI port? -_-"   So I look... "No kthxbaii"  - that's basically what happened ;)

While trying to remove someone's homemade modded hard drive cage from a scrapped PC( i used to fix up old computers for charity) and i broke it in two and caught the back of my hand on one of the pieces and had to get 8 stitches

  • 2 weeks later...

When building a rig for a friend I forgot to install the IO plate. It was lost shortly after in a move and still has never made it into his rig.

Probably my worst computing mistake is when I was messing around with the cables (pluggin things in and out) when the computer was still on.
Managed to totally fry and smoke (fortunately) only one LED strip... I have no idea what I was thinking :(

Bridging two solder points on the pcb of my gpu, while measuring clearance for a new gpu with a measure tape that has a short piece of metal on the tip. The pc was on and every single fan ramped up to full speed but i cut the power off instantly so nothing was harmed.

Why do i always get blue screens? Why not a red one for a change?

Fucking hell, when I was 17 my Dad's PC was really slow, I took my DDR3 RAM out of my PC and replaced it and then fitted my old DDR3 memory into his DDR2 motherboard... ouch.

It didn't work  no shit. It destroyed the RAM.

One time I had to replace the webcam in my laptop, which required me to completely take off the screen. When I put it back together, I forgot to plug in the video cable for the screen..

Took me an hour to figure out what I did and fix it...
