Seiki's 40-inch 4K display is a desk-dominating beauty for under $1000

4K monitors are all over CES, but some of the most promising I’ve seen were from Seiki, known for making low-cost displays. Seiki also had a range of 4K TVs on display, but it was the two 4K monitors that caught my eye: one was big, at 32 inches, while the other was huge at 40 inches.

Both monitors looked great, and 4K resolution easily holds up to close scrutiny at 40 inches. For comparison’s sake, a 24-inch 1920x1080 panel works out to about 92 PPI. A 27-inch 2560x1440 monitor is a bit better, at 109 PPI. A 40-inch 3840x2160 monitor, like Seiki’s, comes in at 110 PPI. That’s easily usable without messing with Windows’ still-not-great DPI scaling.

A couple things excite me about Seiki’s monitors other than the size. One: They’re using Samsung Super MVA, or multi-domain vertical alignment, panels. Even if you follow monitor technology, you may not have heard of MVA. TFTCentral can give you a technical breakdown, but essentially VA is a compromise between fast, cheap, often-washed-out TN panels and slower, more expensive, more vibrant IPS panels. I prefer the color quality and much better viewing angles of IPS to TN and think they’re worth the price premium.

VA may be a good alternative. Seiki’s panels did have great viewing angles—definitely better than any TN monitor I’ve used. They’re also claiming a gray-to-gray pixel response time of 8.5 ms (40-inch) and 9.5ms (32-inch), which is just under a frame at 60Hz. And these monitors do support 60 Hz refresh over DisplayPort 1.2 (they don’t have HDMI 2.0 ports, so a single HDMI port can only handle 30 Hz)

Two: price. Seiki plans to launch the 40-inch monitor under $1000 in the next few months.

They support 10-bit color depth

Pretty nice monitor for under $1000, don't know where you can get a 60Hz 4K monitor that's 40-inches for under $1000. If I was looking into 4K myself and had the GPU horsepower to push it, I would probably be looking to a larger monitor myself because of the PPI. Even though this monitor only supports 6-bit color depth, the writer of the article still said, "I thought colors looked vibrant"

Maybe it's just me, but I don't even think 27-inches is big enough, I would be more than happy with a 40-inch monitor. I was using a 40-inch 1080p TV briefly for about week before I put it in my bedroom once we got cable installed, and I really enjoyed the experience especially in games.

It's probably not just you but personally I just think it's way too much. Used my 32" HDTV as a 2nd monitor for a while, that thing was so in my face.. Not really a fun experience for gaming. Right now I'm happy with 24" 1080p IPS. Gonna add a XL2430T in the future for fps, skip 27" 1440p entirely and probably get myself a 27-28" (max) 4K monitor when the day comes that it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to run 4K @60Hz.

Are these new Seiki displays able to output at 60 Hz?  The first 4K they had could only output at 30 Hz max.

Mystery is the source of all true science.

I wonder if they know that "under $1000" doesn't mean $999.99 in fact, under $1000 should mean under $900

under $1000 =/= under $900, it can be 949.99 for all we know.

Guess it's a personal preference, because after going to the 1080p 40" TV I was like, "I could really get used to this." I liked the "in my face" experience. I felt really submerged in games, and it made desktop browsing feel really cool, almost empowering. I won't be going 4K until a single GPU can power the monitor too. GM200 should make it more plausible, as a fully unlocked variant will be 50% faster than a 980, but of course I'm not paying $1000 for the next Titan.

Yeah they do 60Hz with DP 1.2.

HDMI 1.4 not really all great, but you can still use DP 1.2 for 60Hz. 8.5ms is also not the greatest, considering most monitors are at least 2 ms. However, as far as 6-bit colors go it's 16.2 million or 16 million colors, compared to the normal 8-bit colors which is 16.7 million colors. Most monitors are 8-bit @ 16.7 million. Not ideal, but not terrible.

I say it should be under $900 because any higher and tax would make it over $1000 anyway.

This is a complete rip off.

You can buy 27inch and 24inch IPS 4K monitors from a good brand, with highest adjustable for 700$ 600$ for the 24inch)

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=210-ADOF

And you have more inputs, and the panel is true 8-bit panel.

Already a 30inch makes you move your head and that is annoying. You want a 40inch?!

I'm not looking to get this one, but the 800$ Philips one with a  much better panel in my case. The reason why is that at 40", you can use it comfortably without scaling. I have 3 screens. I need my workspace. This is a web developers wet dream.

At 40 inches, the panel is equivalent to 4 20 inch 1080p screens, but without the need to buy mounting hardware, or bezels. It's perfect size wise. I'd just rather the Philips option.

This isn't really a gaming thing is what I'm saying.

I have a hard time believing it only supports 6-bit color anyway, more likely it uses a 6-bit panel with AFRC like most monitors, and the author thought that meant 6-bit color only.

If that were the case there would be 0 reason to buy this, especially over the Philips 40 inch panel for cheaper.

AFAIK its 1.07 mil colours on 6-bit compared to 16.7mil on 8-bit

That author made a mistake. No such thing as a 6-bit monitor sporting 1.07 million colors.

How to Tell if an LCD is 8-Bit or 6-Bit

This is the biggest problem for individuals who are looking at purchasing an LCD monitor. Most manufacturers do not list the color depth of their display. Even fewer will list the actual per-color depth. If the manufacturer lists the color as 16.7 million colors, it should be assumed that the display is 8-bit per-color. If the colors are listed as being 16.2 million or 16 million, consumers should assume that it uses a 6-bit per-color depth. If no color depths is listed, it should be assumed that monitors of 12ms or faster will be 6-bit and the 20ms and slower panels are 8-bit.

http://compreviews.about.com/od/multimedia/a/LCDColor.htm

6 Bit color depth means that the screen can only show 262k colors, but many 6 Bit screens use a process called Frame Rate Control (FRC) or "Dithering" to simulate around 16.2 million colors or even 16.7 million in modern displays

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1085029

Should I Worry About 6-bit vs. 8-bit vs. 10-bit Panels?

An 8-bit display would offer a colour palette of 16.7 million colours. They offer a 'true' colour palette, and are generally the choice of manufacturers for colour critical displays over 6-bit panels. On the other hand modern 6-bit screens use a range of Frame Rate Control (FRC) technologies to extend the colour palette from 262,144 colours to around 16.7m.
