$799 Asus 4K monitor with IPS panel , 100% sRGB coverage, 10-bit color

ahhming

The latest monitor from Asus is   27" PB279Q, which combines in-plane switching tech with a 3840x2160 display resolution for only $799.

Asus says the monitor offers 10-bit color and 100% sRGB coverage. That's a little better than the 99% sRGB coverage promised by the 4K IPS monitors Dell introduced last month. The PB279Q's 5-ms response time is also slightly faster than those of its Dell counterpart.

Variable refresh rates aren't part of the package, so users will have to make do with a steady 60Hz. The monitor can display 4K images at that rate, but only over its mini and full-sized DisplayPort 1.2 inputs. 4K input over HDMI is limited to 30Hz.

The PB279Q is due to hit Europe, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia this month. The press release doesn't mention a launch window for North America, but we've pinged Asus for additional details. "Prices start from US$799 and may vary by region," the company warns.

That sounds like a good monitor for a good price but...

4K on 28" display is unusable under default scaling and once you start changing the scale under windows, thingsturn ugly pretty fast. IMO 32-34" is where it's at, still a big PPI increase yet usable on default scaling. As for gaming, we are still not at the point where 2 GPU's can drive 4K properly

This is LTT. One cannot force "style over substance" values & agenda on people that actually aren't afraid to pop the lid off their electronic devices, which happens to be the most common denominator of this community. Rather than take shots at this community in every post, why not seek out like-minded individuals elsewhere?

163.18 PPI according to isthisretina.com

the approximate distance for the screen to be "retina" is 21 inches.

seems good to me! thats about how far I sit from my current 1080p 23" monitor

glad to see its $800 but still doesnt mean i can afford one...yet! xD

Make it 24inch, wide gamut, then I'll buy it.

Also, response time is meaningless figures. We have already seen 1ms response time monitors that are slower than 8ms ones.

Its which ever gray to gray colors is picked when doing the measurement (hence g-t-g).

I am happy to see more and more 10bit panels on the market (well i think we all know they are true 8-bit panel with A-FRC for 10-bit emulation).

Maybe we will start seeing more and more software supporting 10-bit colors, and consumer graphics card supporting it... I want to say, it would be awesome to have games supporting 10-bit colors as well, but that means you'll need even more GPU memory. Seeing how games took ages to support anything other than DirectX 9, I don't have my hopes up, any time soon, but it is wishful thinking. We have eyes that can see several billions colors, if not more, and the thing we look at the most days, for most people barely displays 16.7 million colors. Why not enjoy something better, is what I am saying.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236294 I just got the BenQ GW2765HT for $344 from B&H Photo, which is just as good as the PB278Q imo.

It's a very nice spec 4K monitor, but until there is proper scaling on Windows and a single GPU that can play games, I'm not sold on 4K.

It's great to see them still pushing the specs and lower prices, especially as the long term outcomes will mean when we have hardware and games that truly need that high of a resolution it won't be prohibitively expensive, but for now 4K and 10 bit is overkill for most gamers.

Looks absolutely stunning.

Was wanting to jump on the 4K ship this year but I bought two 1080p IPS monitors instead on cyber monday. I think when Asus includes adaptive sync on their 4K IPS displays along with better IO at around ~$600 is when I'll jump ship.

EDIT: Also by then single GPUs will handle 4k gaming much better and also 4K content will be more prevalent.
