Sleep vs Shut Down

I do it since storms are unpredictable.

I agree with you completely. Florida is not a good place to leave computer in sleep mode. But if there is a storm I end up turning the thing off before hand anyways and jump onto my laptop.

When I leave the house, all power sockets are switched off, so yes I turn off my computer.

With a SSD, boot times are not an issue for me anyway.

Hello, I remember like week ago linus said "who turns off theyr PCs thees days  anyway" . Welp, I do. Just talked with friend who lost important game match because of BSOD, he haven't turned off pc for 2 weeks. So why wouldn't you turn off pc if you may lose your work/match because of it? Thees days system boots in 20 sec anyways.

Ah, the logical fallacies.  Yes, him not restarting was absolutely 100% the only reason for his BSOD.

I haven`t turned off my computer for the past 10 years :)

Exceptions are power outings and component swapping/removal ;)

I leave my computer on overnight if I go to sleep late or if I am working on something that I plan to do in the morning. Other than the only other time I do is when I am downloading some larger files and games. In my experience, when things go to sleep they don't always come back like they were and I run into some problems. And with so much RAM my hibernate file becomes so massive that I actually disabled it all together.

Mine runs 24/7, but I restart it usually once a week for updates etc. I shut it down and turn off the surge bar during thunderstorms or if I'm away for more than a day.

Sure it boots up in seconds with the SSD, but it uses so little power that it really makes almost no difference on our energy bill.

If I don't plan on using it for an extended period (an hour or so) I turn it off. It boots up quickly anyway with SSD and all. Can't imagine leaving it turned on for days can be good, but whatever.

I power off every night due to overly loud fans. If I ever get some nicer fans and a controller of some sort then maybe I'll leave it on, but until then it's better to turn it off.

My motherboard has problems booting up 100% sometimes, so I can't always turn it off. It doesn't even post. I would have to repeatedly turn off/back on until the post comes up. Very annoying.

I turn mine off usually daily. If I'm gone for more than an hour or two I'll shut it off/if it's overnight and I'm not rendering/uploading anything then I'll kill it as well.

With an SSD as a boot drive the thing fires up faster than I sit down. Gotta love technology.

Never say it's not broken. Everything is broken. Why? Because everything needs MOAR POWA!

I keep my computer running 24/7 for a couple of reasons:

1) Don't feel like waiting for it to boot up. It's faster to just turn my monitors off/on.

2) I run a Plex server.

My laptop is my server this poor thing gets shut down monthly if even that.

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

I turn off my main rig whenever I am not using it, I find re starting helps to keep the performance at it's peak where as if I dont re-start gaming everyday starts to take its tole on it's performance. Not to mention I open a lot of you tube video, file moving around and what not. Although I do have an old Dell optiplex 750 I think it is that I upgraded the RAM that has 2 internal drives and a usb 1tb drive that I share (use as a NAS) as I like to keep my PC as empty as possible. Oh I also have it folding but it's reasonably low power and does not create that many work units but im not in it for the work units just that I have spare processing power seen as it is mainly just a nas.

I never leave it open unless im downloading something or updating games in steam. Waster of electricity. And it boots up around 10secs. so that is not a hassle :P

I my computer is not in my room...

So, I have to turn it off at night...

But, When my bro is out then my PC runs 24/7...

I only restart my pc For the updates or new Drivers...

Cause turning off/on your monitor saves time and work...

Felling Awesome.....

I don't. Too much misc stuff I can't/shouldn't miss. Good 'ol list.

Steam/Skype/IRC pings and messages for things I manage + staying logged into aforementioned services.

Alarm clock in the event I actually need another (usually don't use it though)

Powers my Chromecast

Plex, SFTP servers.

Teamviewer if something isn't doable on mobile.

Backups

misc large downloads

i don't like boot times

Only 2 reasons for me to reboot; Windizzle update, and forced software restarts.

I prefer to keep mine off when I'm not home. that being said, I keep pc's at the office running 24/7 due to remote access stuff etc... but also because they are quad core apu machines, and only consume 20 watts total while idling, which is a joke.

I don't intend to leave it on, unless it's doing something. Electricity, while cheap, has an environmental cost. I don't get why people say "I'm lazy" or whatnot. 8 seconds of your life isn't too much to ask for a cold boot. Just seems selfish imho.
