LTT Official Folding Month V (2022)

One of my 2080ti WUs is stuck on 99.99% (1 sec remaining), and keeps doing it.

 

I've tried removing the slot and adding it back, restarting, dumping the work folder but this keeps happening to this one card.

 

Does anyone know what's happening here, and if there's a way to fix it?

what does the log of the slot say when it gets stuck?

I don't know how productive it'll be compared to more powerful systems, but I now have another CPU running F@h. This time it's a 4C/8T Intel Core i7-6920HQ, a high end mobile Skylake part from September 2015. It's old, but it's still a decently capable CPU for lots of workloads. The computer itself is a 2016 15" Apple MacBook Pro, and it's definitely not the most ideal machine for 24/7 folding use. 

 

The laptop is a nice computer, and it happens to be the highest end model from 2016 (the only thing that isn't fully upgraded on it is the SSD - mine has the 1TB SSD instead of the optional 2TB SSD). It also has the upgraded 4GB AMD Radeon Pro 460 dedicated GPU, but I won't be able to take advantage of that for F@h purposes. F@h can only do CPU folding when running in macOS, and I don't have any easy ways to install Windows on this laptop since the screen is cracked and unusable. 

 

Still, the CPU alone is currently estimating more than 55,000 PPD, which isn't too bad for a laptop that was just sitting around doing nothing.

where is the thread for dead hardware again? the old EVGA SUPERNOVA 1000 G3 in my server just died.

This also means one 24-core epyc and a 3080 will be out of the race untill the new PSU arrives tomorrow.

Started up 2 5900x CPU’s. Sad thing is that they won’t increase my PPD.

still seems sus lol then again i am a paranoid Ebayer

 

also no wonder is so cold in my bedroom my heater lost its wifi connection...if a reboot dont bring it bac will hard wire it lol

That, plus the fact that literally none of the 4090 cards currently for sale fit in a 4U rackmount server, which is what i use for F@H. so i cannot even use one anyway.

 

what kind of connection is that not trying to Nitpick but i would ventre to say having a flat connection like that was the cause...and yeah i 100% agree skipping 4000 series unless they introduce a 70 or 80 with 3x8pins...

He also has an r7 2700 for sale and says he just upgraded, so it's not like he's running a mining rig seeing as it is only one card

Hmm, seems suspicious. How does that deal compare to a $200 RTX 2070? I ordered an OEM Dell RTX 2070 for $200 from eBay last night, and if I'm looking at the GPU PPD database right it looks like the 2070 would offer a bit more PPD/dollar than a 1070 Ti for $150. 

 

Not a bad deal for a 1070 Ti, but I'm not sure how much you're looking to spend.

Not a bad deal for a 1070 Ti, but I'm not sure how much you're looking to spend. 

A 2070 is about double the yield of a 1070ti

my dell OEM 2070 is an M card... 

 

only does like 1.3-1.4m but it is hella efficient

FYI for anyone that snags a 4090, it appears pcie 3.0x16 limits the 4090's folding performance. It seemed like the gpu was underperforming so I tried it in another system and the same wu number, and the ppd is several million higher. Either that or zen1 issues. It is in a zen3 system now with pcie4.0x16, from a first gen threadripper. Will keep an eye on if it is consistent, but yeah, that seems to be an issue with these cards. They are just stupid fast in compute.

well, Maybee a gen3x16 would be safer and it can't run as fast so thusly uses less power...thusly less likely to melt connector...

Someone tried burning the plug with a flame and it appeared to be self-extinguishing plastic, so fire is unlikely I think.  Not that I'd be happy if it melted, I will likely re-check the connection after the event as I suspect its more likely to happen in gaming due to lighting up more of the silicon and related power spikes.
