Due to an issue with the machine that gives us credit on our power meter I need to do some load shedding for the next 12-24 hours to keep the lights on. all my GPUs are power limited anyway so will be taking the lower efficiency cards offline overnight

This is what it has come to with a passively cooled 200W laptop PSU.

It is a chilly 22C now instead of 38C.

Are we doing a list of the dead hardware this year? If so it looks like I'll have a Dell Precision to add to the list. My Precision T3500 seems to have some sort of major motherboard issue. It locks up every time I pause F@h or any other intensive workload, but it's rock solid when running those workloads. The only thing I can think of is thermal expansion, but I don't know for sure.

They're EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3s, and they perform like crazy! With a quick and dirty overclock on both cards, they're absolutely demolishing Folding@Home! The system remains relatively quiet as well, despite over 700 watts of heat being dumped into the radiator.

Damn! That's not far behind my stock 3080. Makes me wish my 2080 Ti was functional for folding month.

i also assume the bios is fully updated on it (A17)? and not sure if its an option on the T3500 did you try disabling cstate? I know it wrecks havoc on the T3600s...

I thought it was fully updated, but I just checked and it's still on A14. I haven't tried disabling c-states yet, but I'll look to see if this machine has it. I'm running a Xeon X5690, so I know I'm pusing the board pretty hard. All four PCIe slots are in use and all six memory slots are full. 

 

The ironic thing about this is that this Precision T3500 is the second one I have with motherboard issues. This one locks up (and by locked up I mean completely locked up - the power draw sits at 170W without wavering), and the other one has developed issues with the memory slots.

With completely stock settings it's usually around the 7 million PPD mark. Unfortunately I can't OC it to see how far it'll go - it's dying, and it already likes to crash at stock settings. The one time I tried to OC it I got a bunch of blue artifacts all over the screen. Fun. It'll be replaced under warranty soon - that process has already been started. 

 

I don't actually know the story behind my 2080 Ti or my 2070 Super. I bought them cheap on eBay and intended to put both in an oven before folding month started, but I never got the chance to do it. The 2070S has successfully booted and loaded the drivers, but it only did that a couple times. Usually the drivers fail to load and it artifacts at any resolution above 1024x768. 

 

The 2080 Ti is much the same, but it's even less willing to work with the Nvidia driver. This card also artifacts above 1024x768. They're both HP OEM blower cards, and they're in good physical condition. Once I get some time I'll put them in an oven or hit them with a heat gun, but I doubt that'll be before the end of the month. I've actually been considering selling the 2070S and buying a working 2070 from eBay. Some are as low as $200, and for F@h use I don't really care how fancy it is. A blower card would actually be preferable for me in some of my machines. I wish I had some way to get cheaper cards, but eBay is basically my only decent option.

What's more insane about it is when you consider the performance per watt compared to the 3080.  Speaking of, my UPS seems to peak at 630W with the Ryzen folding too and my network switch plugged in.

 

If anyone is curious about cable bend in the Be Quiet DX500 which claims to support 190mm tower coolers:

 

Yeah I REALLY wouldn't want a tighter bend than that (and wish I'd dusted my side panel).

Honestly I'm just glad I didn't cave and get an AIB model as some of them are something like 2cm wider and none of them properly vent out the back so the case fans would have had been cranking up higher.  I guess the extra profit NVIDIA make on their own card meant they could design a much more carefully crafted cooler (say that ten times quickly), its not exactly fair and you can understand why EVGA got fed up.

this is the one thing keeping me from buying a 4090. I've had some bad luck with GPU power connectors in the past and i really don't want to risk it again.

That, plus the fact that literally none of the 4090 cards currently for sale fit in a 4U rackmount server, which is what i use for F@H. so i cannot even use one anyway.
