It is here, just in time!

Imagine if FAH could use the tensor and RT cores somehow for folding, think of what the 4090 could do...

FYI for anyone that snags a 4090, it appears pcie 3.0x16 limits the 4090's folding performance. It seemed like the gpu was underperforming so I tried it in another system and the same wu number, and the ppd is several million higher. Either that or zen1 issues. It is in a zen3 system now with pcie4.0x16, from a first gen threadripper. Will keep an eye on if it is consistent, but yeah, that seems to be an issue with these cards. They are just stupid fast in compute.

I can understand that, I notice on all my boxes how the GPU goes idle frequently which I think is when it hits a checkpoint.  That doesn't appear to be related to checkpointing frequency which I think is only how often it saves a checkpoint to permanent storage.

Not sure, as its generally the one with two splits that goes (split in the metal bit that grips the pins), but there has also been at least one native PSU connector that failed which I think only had one split, which would imply its not limited to one manufacturer.

Someone tried burning the plug with a flame and it appeared to be self-extinguishing plastic, so fire is unlikely I think.  Not that I'd be happy if it melted, I will likely re-check the connection after the event as I suspect its more likely to happen in gaming due to lighting up more of the silicon and related power spikes.

Melting plastic isn't usually what starts a fire.  Usually it is the melt that causes a short, which in turn starts an electrical fire somewhere.  Anything that is capable of destroying an entire system like they pictured though, should've been stopped with the PSU's overcurrent protection.

Yeah exactly, if a decent PSU doesn't trip on a short then you have even bigger problems.

Given how RNG all of this Points gaining is going. He is safer than you might think. I just finished a day with more WU but somehow almost 10 mil less point. I would love if someone could explain how all of this points thing work. As this is after switching to Alzheimer too.

Woah, I've done 20 million points already, and that's with just one of my three GPUs running (that too in a very power-efficient state). I remember in the 2020 Folding month I did 20 million points in total, folding at max. boost throughout on 34 out of 35 days!

Desktop 1 : Ryzen 5 3600 (O/C to 4Ghz all-core) | Gigabyte B450M-DS3H | 24GB DDR4-2400 Crucial(O/C to 2667) | GALAX RTX 2060 6GB | CoolerMaster MWE 650 Gold

Desktop 2 : i5 10400 | 32GB DDR4-3200(@ 2667Mhz) |  EVGA GTX 1070 SC 8 GB | Corsair CV450M

Laptop : ASUS ROG Strix G17 : i7-10750H, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660Ti 6GB(90W), 1TB NVMe SSD

what kind of connection is that not trying to Nitpick but i would ventre to say having a flat connection like that was the cause...and yeah i 100% agree skipping 4000 series unless they introduce a 70 or 80 with 3x8pins...

no nitpicking here, you are absolutely correct that the flat adapter was the cause. the firedepartment even confirmed it.

so yeah, i do NOT like GPU power adapters anymore. especially since the Nvidia ones are already melsting..

Hi. It looks like my ip address is blocked by all temple.edu WSs. It is not much of a problem for my main rig, that gets another WS assigned almost momentarily, but other older PC spent like 15h waiting for another WS to get assigned. Is it possible to get myself unblocked somehow, or just don't get any assignments from them?

It’s probably not so much the ip was blocked but either the card that is in that computer didn’t have any jobs that matched it or the server you got assigned to was down that happens from time to time sadly.

They also have power levels for video cards let’s at for an example say a 30 and 40 series may be able to work any job but a 1060 may only be able to work smaller jobs due to lower power and if it got assigned a larger job it may not complete on time.

And if it’s an amd vCard they can only work certain wus on top of the power levels too.

But if you still believe you are being blocked by a wu server best bet would be to go to https://foldingforum.org/viewforum.php?f=18&sid=e77fac6c7492a6629a3b80bc813283c1 and ask there. There is a lot of info they will need like the logs and ips of the server etc. that is the official folding at home forums.

Log since I dumped the last WU on this slot (which did the same thing). Log shows its crashed twice at 10%, yet in client still displays 99.99%.

Card is not overclocked, or running hot. All of my other cards are running find on this rig and others, so I'm a little lost.

PS - Sorry for the late reply, any help is much appreciated ❤️

Log since I dumped the last WU on this slot (which did the same thing). Log shows its crashed twice at 10%, yet in client still displays 99.99%.

Card is not overclocked, or running hot. All of my other cards are running find on this rig and others, so I'm a little lost.

PS - Sorry for the late reply, any help is much appreciated ❤️

Update:

Actually, I've now got a second card doing the exact same thing 😕 - another 2080 ti.

@cbigfootThanks! I'm pretty sure my ip is blocked, since I cant even access main domain of Temple University without vpn.

As per this thread looks like the most viable solution is to use a VPN, or to set up http proxy for F@H client. Are there any info on what kind of data F@H client sends through http in order to set up a WU? Setting up a vpn client for additional 30k PPD isn't really worth it and using random free http proxy would be kinda hairy, imo.

You might want to look at it as an investment into online privacy and security that has a side benefit of being able to use it for FAH, it might make it easier to justify buying. Tbh though if you couldn't care less about that then I'd agree that its probably a waste to use it just for FAH.

Just an FYI. no matter what we do by using a VPN. We are just switching who gets our data. and call me a cynic but I don't trust any VPN no matter how many PR stunts they do to assure people that they don't collect data or store it. With that said, VPN is great way to access otherwise geo-locked services, content, or even promotions. it is kinda depressing how companies get away with price gauging per region.

One can always just build their own VPN server. Just a single script to set up and then install a client.

This is a script that I use quite often: http://github.com/Nyr/wireguard-install

iirc, there's also a setting to change what gets logged (I've forgotten how), so that's there if you don't trust the provider.

It’s the next one. Always the next step, Dalinar."

If you think I'm wrong, correct me. If I've offended you in some way tell me what it is and how I can correct it. I want to learn, and along the way one can make mistakes; Being wrong helps you learn what's right.
