Just working on the blog post now, probably will be up within the hour

It is here, just in time!

Yeah thinking about it the problem I had makes total sense, it was within the rating but that short time switching power sources will cause the PSU caps to drain and the spike from them recharging pushed it over the limit.  You'd presumably need an active UPS to avoid that issue.

even used. they cost money.

What's up with the official F@H statistics btw?

Their page has me at Rank 1,010 of 2,939,788 but Extreme Overclocking shows Rank 991.

As for team statistics, rather bizarre the rank on there sorts by global rank rather than team rank when the rest of the statistics are team specific.

I just use Extreme Overclocking and sort by points total.

During the event I sort by points update or points today to get an idea on how people are performing.

I get the opposite. I have a better rank on the official f@h stats page, but that's because they count points for all teams, whereas extremeoverclocking keeps them separate. So you end up having duplicate user names on EO that have no link to each other. It's kinda weird.

As for UPS's, I'm a big fan of the APC SMT series. Pure sinewave output, all metal housing so less likely of melting if there's a problem, and because a lot of businesses use them and get rid of them when the batteries die, you can often find them really cheap with no batteries. After adding in the cost of new aftermarket batteries, I'm only about 30-40% the cost of a new unit.

Am I right in assuming folding month is a participation-based community event and not a competitive event? I ask because I've got one box folding on another team and I wasn't going to switch it over unless there's a competition.

sidenote: I ran the script but forgot to install F@H. So now I've lost 6hrs.

thats to do with production, not total points afaik... I trust EOC more than their own lmao

It's competitive purely for fun. It's all for science at the end of the day, so you're all good. Just pay attention to the participation requirements on the main event page.

If you're using a switching UPS, which most of them out there are (unless you go active or double conversion, which are usually only hospital or data center stuff), the key things to look at are switching time and pure sine output.  Several years ago, pure sine didn't matter, but with all modern PSUs having active power factor correction for quite some time now, they need the pure sine to work right.  For the switching time, I've seen everything from 2ms in good spec sheets through the common "good" 6-8ms range of things like the APC Backups RS units, to 12ish ms on the APC CS/ES units, and 25+ on a lot of the cheap no name ones.  The lower the switching time, the better both it and your computer will handle the cut over seamlessly.  Several of the UPSs mentioned, like APC, actually allow you to set the sensitivity or reaction time...aka switching speed.  They usually ship in the middle setting, which is far worse response time, in order to not trip over to battery on all the little things like when your well pump or pool pump turn on and drop the input voltage for that fraction of a second.  This is good, but also means longer response time for when the voltage goes away entirely.

In an intel spec (not sure if still current or not, probably not), they had specified a hold up time of 18ms coming from a PSU under solid load.  Note that it is under continued load, not increasing or spiking load as most GPUs will also put on PSUs.

My favorite UPS at this point is my Vertiv PSI5.  They ship with the faster of their modes enabled, which is 4ms, and then let you change to be more allowant (up to 10ms) if you need to for your power conditions (though I would argue, if your power is so bad that you do, then you really need to spend the money for a double conversion to truly filter your power).  Note: I run the lithium versions of those, so I won't deal with batteries forever...and the run times are great...but they also have non-lithium versions which are quite reasonably priced.

If you're going with APC (or any of the consumer brands you'll find at Staples or Best Buy or similar), you really need to go to the SmartUps (business critical/server pure sine) line now if you run anything beyond some office apps and a web browser.  Even the consumer pure sine UPSs generally suck, or are actually undersized for running their rated loads, since they don't figure it will happen more than once or twice, and with limited run time, they won't make it to meltdown point, just hitting thermal limits by the time the battery dies.

How do you get 6 WUs in 3 hours? One WU for my 3050 is nearly 12 hours... Not sure why it takes so much longer for me 😞

Keep in mind that I am sometimes wrong, so please correct me if you believe this is the case!

To expand on what @GOTSpectrum said about some of us with multiple cards, here's a screenshot of my stats from the past few days:

image.png.e0b5dd006d06c9a6e370553a51463b6c.png

As you can see I'm doing quite a lot of work units, but overall I'm only getting around 10 million PPD (which isn't bad, mind you). This is because I'm folding on several GPUs (10 currently) along with 2 CPUs. All but one of my GPUs are fairly weak in the grand scheme of things, so they get fewer points per WU. But, due to the number of cards I'm folding on the WU count is rather high.
