I remember the days when it took me about a year to get one million points at all. The Core 2 Duo that did all that work is still in use all these years later.

I don't know why it feels like so long ago. I started folding in 2016, but it feels like it's been longer than that.

Yep. My 1660 Ti gets more points in one day than my old C2D could get in a year, and the 3080 I've been using for this week gets almost 6x the points of the 1660 Ti. Hell, even my laptop gets well over 100K PPD, and that's running Folding@home though Rosetta on Apple Silicon (M1 Max). I love the progress when it comes to the competition part of folding.

Thinking on it, that's wild. I remember my mind being blown back when I got a laptop with a 670mx built in, because I had a portable machine that could break 100k PPD. 6 figures of PPD with only 150W! Now the CPU cores alone on a 50W chip can break 100k when running through a translation layer. Crazy.

I think my first omg moment was going from a GT 460 to a GTX 980ti... it was such an insane jump

A 460 to a 980ti is an absolutely bonkers jump! That's a good 4 hardware generations, probably a good 500-600% performance improvement! I had a similar moment jumping from a 6870 to a 1080 on my desktop -- but I did have the aforementioned laptop to hold me over.

I don't seem to have the self restraint to wait quite that long to upgrade these days, but those kinds of jumps were so big they would totally redefine the experience you get from your card.

After my crazy day yesterday it looks like I've hit a rough spot. I've only been able to get three of my GPUs to fold today (GTX 1660 Ti, RTX 3080, and one RX 570). I just got the second 570 back up and running, so there's another 400K-500K points in the next day or so. A new card might be arriving in the mail tomorrow, and if it does it might be able to get me a few more points by the end of the event.

I keep looking at 3xxx cards and the prices edging down and down…. But then I remind myself to save the money for the 4xxx cards.

I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that the 3000-series are more of just a small incremental improvement over the 2000-series. Yes, they are faster but at some serious increases in power and price so the increases just aren’t there in efficiency and value.

I've been pretty surprised at how far the 3000 series cards can be wrangled compared to out of the box efficiency -- I can cut my 3080's power by 22% and drop virtually no performance -- but seeing what you've gotten up to, I'm sure you're aware of that. :old-smile: They really push the higher end chips far beyond the efficiency curve.

That being said, the 3000 series definitely still seems out of whack compared to pretty much anything I've personally known since the GTX 400 series. I'm hoping that's because of the move to Samsung's manufacturing node, since Nvidia will presumably move back to TSMC at some point.

As someone who really likes powerful small form factor PCs, I'm a bit worried about the rumors swirling about for the 4000 series as well. Really hoping we don't continue to balloon up to 500-600W graphics cards.
