t’s a feature that Twitter users have been requesting for so long that it’s become a meme, but now the mythical “edit button” is actually becoming a reality. Twitter has announced that it’s working to allow users to edit their tweets after posting them.

The idea is that you’ll be able to fix any typos or errors in a tweet without sacrificing any replies, retweets, or likes it’s already accrued.

Twitter plans to begin testing the feature with Twitter Blue subscribers in “the coming months,” the company said Tuesday.

Jay Sullivan, the company’s VP of consumer product, said that editing has been “the most requested Twitter feature for many years” in a thread on Tuesday. The company has been looking into how to build the feature “in a safe manner” since last year.

“Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation,” he said. “Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.”

 

My thoughts

Dear Bidoof, FINALLY. So it seems that twitter will finally be adding the long requested Edit button and it's on its way to Twitter Blue users. Tho I doubt that current Twitter Blue users are any more than a handful, I suspect that this will drive up the numbers. Now, it remains to be seen HOW this'll be implemented and if there will be stuff like edit lock after a couple day or hours of posting. That being said, I hope this feature will be implemented soon for regular users as well along with needed protections against misuse of this feature.

As long as you can look at the complete edit history for tweets, I think this is overall a good change. I think that if the edit history is public, then people who abuse the edit feature will quickly find that it's not worth it, as the outrage from them trying to cover up their mistake will often be greater than the initial outrage caused by the tweet.

So does this change the Tweet is legal speech thing passed when Trump was president? Pay $35 for a russian call service to sim swap someones phone for 2FA and now you can edit all their tweets and legally change what has been said? This sounds like a nightmare

Publicly available change logs would be a must, but if I'm looking at it from twitter's perspective it makes sense to just tag the tweet in 2pt font as "edited" because it's being added for paid users accounts.

Hopefully they limit the time to edit a tweet. Like make it at most 10 minutes before the EDIT button becomes disabled.

 

Keeping change logs, would also be a good additional solution.

 

In my opinion it needs to be implemented but with lots of limitations, of HOW and WHEN you can edit a tweet

 

Otherwise you will run into issues like

The editing feature should only be used to Correct spelling mistakes. Not causing Riots, or making people look like" NAZI" supporters when they originally replied Praising the original post, thinking it was ANTI-NAZI.

And yes My example might be a bit extreme, but This kind of stuff can and WILL happen, by people who like to abuse the system/ like to see how much they can push the limitations of said feature.

Not needed, but could be benign or a disaster depending on how it's implemented.

 

Knowing Twitter, odds are good they'll go with the most disastrous implementation possible.

yeah, while an edit button is great, Im not sure its a great idea for Twitter especially since its used for a lot of political stuff… so I think a 10 minute limit should be a must. Otherwise this not only is open for big abuse, but could also be a massive own goal for elon twitter…

Either social media is treated as a public square where the content matters and logs and records must be kept or it's treated as it should be which is a form online for people to make whatever comments they want. If you want an edit button but feel that Twitter comments are so powerful that they need to be logged then the entire platform needs to be rebuilt to better protect free speech and not allow people to be removed by mob rule because someone's feelings got hurt.

I don't think edit-button is a good idea. If some scum posts a reply which can be offensive or discriminating, they'll edit it as if never happened and therefore, they can get away with it.

Not that it matters, racism is racism no matter which race it's done on but it was the n word used; and could be easily determined within a second of viewing the picture that it was racist (the guy posting was white).

 

Anyways, point is, the edit button I don't think will cause a whole lot of manipulation and such because it's as simple as having a time limit put on edits and audit logs for the people to see....with the general point that it won't let people "get away with with it"...and the other point being that it's not moderated well enough anyways so it wouldn't really change much in terms of people getting away with it since this is the second such case where I've reported something and it's not dealt with.

Everything else really makes Twitter even less reliable than it already  is and an "edit button" without  the aforementioned changes and measures, is not a good thing AT ALL.

Allow edits for 5 minutes for Subscribers. List the First with a button and list "edited" somewhere like everywhere else. Boom. Done. Twitter is generally too stupid to figure simple things outs.
