Nintendo's Next console will launch within the next 79 years

I'll admit that that title is a bit clickbaity

Summary

Nintendo explains to investors that the Switch console is probably sticking around for quite some time.

With the launch of the Switch OLED, Nintendo is aiming for a sixth year of growth, “something never before experienced with [its] dedicated video game platform business.” No company wants to move on from a platform when it's still growing, hence the non-commital 20XX date above.

For now, Nintendo has denied plans for another iteration of the Switch beyond the OLED model.

 

My thoughts

I'm sure there'll be a whole host of other interesting information in that document (but I don't want to go through it rn, not to mention that it'll probably be a lot for a single tech news post here). But yea, as disappointing as it may be, there will not be any other new console or switch iteration from Nintendo for the forseeable Future. Although, as the source article notes, this isn't really out of line for nintendo as both DS and 3DS had 9 year life spans and the wii had an 11 year life span. Well, I suppose that's that and we probably should move on and wait for another 4 years but who knows, Nintendo might pull a fast one on us and surprise us with a switch Pro (Come on nintendo you know you want to do this...... Pwetty Pwease)

No Nintendo, you're not going to compete against the likes of Apple or Netflix. Or, perhaps you're looking to sell in-game items via micro-transactions? Not sure what other value added services are to be had other than just console local and online gaming.

I love how they completely left the wii u off their timeline, it's like they dont even want to acknowledge it's assistance either.

 

What ever they decide to go with for the next console, i really really hope they have backwards compatibility with switch games. the other big consoles have pushed for it with the new gen, so i do hope nintendo follows suit.

 

With that said, i absolutely love the switch form-factor, being a dockable portable system is fantastic, i hope they stick with it.

There is nothing wrong with Nintendo's approach, they are the only company doing it, people like consistency and a device they can play on.

 

The only drawback is that value conscious first buyers may realize the Switch has barely been discounted in years for the hardware that is in it and will become cheaper to manufacture over time..

Personally I think Nintendo makes the best console/game combo. They focus on fun games instead of shiny graphics.

the switch and the steamdeck will cut into eachother's sales, but the switch and deck are very diffrent core audiences.

Until Nintendo develops software for it, I doubt it. People buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games.

at the rate nintendo upgrades their hardware, that will be released in the year 2xxx

Nintendo also mentioned it will invest heavily on their online infrastructure. They'll now upgrade their 56kbps modem with a state of the art 1Mbps broadband connection. They have also received new servers powered by Intel's latest Pentium II processors that they acquired from a liquidation sale of Tiger Electronics, Game.com game console (released in 1997), division.

Yea, and I can tell you this from personal experience, they still do need some work and polish round the edges. The inability to use link codes is bit annoying tho.

Also compared to the rather underpowered switich, the emulators do need pretty poweful hardware to run it well

Rumor has it they managed to find a 10 Mbps LAN card but threw it out for being "too modern" and "our infrastructure doesn't support things this advanced".

You might want to consult a lawyer about that opinion.

 

Nintendo owns the IP, you own a copy limited to whatever format you purchased it on.

 

Same goes for the music industry. Just because you bought the CD doesn't mean you're allowed to download the song for free online or request that it's delivered on vinyl or tape. You want it on that format, you have to purchase it on that format.

no. You own a single licence to that game. 

if you own a cd, you are perefectly allowed to rip the cd to a file

if you own a game, you should be allowed to dump it to a file

you should TECHNICALLY distroy the old copy, otherwise you may have duplicated your copy, but it may still be fine if only you use it.

 

You cant request that you get music on vynl or tape. but you are 100% allowed to maye your own tape or vinyl, if you have the equiptment.

 

though some lawyers seem to interprite the (usa) law diffrently, thats the most common interpritation

well, theres a diffrence. ROM sites dont dump your copy, they have one dump and distribute it. thats diffrent that dumping your own game to use it.

I won't touch upon the emulation subject (far too gray for my liking), but the RIAA has made it pretty clear what is and isn't legal for music downloading/copying:https://www.riaa.com/resources-learning/about-piracy/

Can't recall the name of the product, but Nintendo did sue (and won) against the maker of a device that ROM dumped to a local hard drive. If I recall, the idea was to have it so you wouldn't need to keep swapping the carts when playing.

 

If Nintendo encrypted the contents of the ROM cartridge, and you hack it to dump the image, you're violating the DMCA. Hell, just Google "Nintendo DMCA" and have fun reading through all that.
