Is leaving the cable of a laptop charger connected to the plug all the time bad?

It still holds at least a portion of a charge, as I can at least unplug it and move it without it shutting off. On a side note, my Nexus 7 2013 has been plugged in (my alarm clock) for at least 5 years and still has a good battery.

You can disconnect, and leave the cable in the wall.

But if you reconnect, connect the wall side first.
You can leave the charger connected, but its possible it takes a little power the whole time.
So thats more a choice of do you want that.

I have read/reread this thread and now (hey, I'm old ok?) I can see what you're getting at. Interestingly, I have always wondered if unplugging the cord from the power brick(?) in the middle of the charging cable would cause problems. I would think that it is a more stout connection to unplug from rather than the somewhat fragile connection at the laptop. It may be good to get another cable as a spare and see if anything untoward happens.

I think that were I live (Uruguay) they don't sell the cable alone anywhere unluckily

I look at it this way. 

As long as your Brick cable is plugged into a surge suppressor or even better a UPS, you will be absolutely fine. 

 

ALL my electronics are plugged into at least suppressor. It will give your electronics clean power, which is what helps them last longer. 

 

My only thought on the plugging and unplugging of the brick to the laptop, is that it will wear down (VERY minutely) over time. 

But as long as the male end of the connector stays in the female end, then it will be fine.

F.y.i. a surge protector does NOT give you 'clean' power. It just cuts it completely if its to much, as in power surge.
(A good UPS will however).

Just leaving the cable in and not plugged into anything, won't do anything.

 

The cable by itself will basically just act as an extension of the port. It won't do anything negative.

It would be like leaving an extension cord plugged in the wall at all time. Won't do anything.

Nope it's not bad 100% safe and like others have said to even if you want to keep it connected to the charger it bypasses the battery so it's not constantly running though it. Or at least it should some brands still do this

I'm going to provide a bit of a counter to the "perfectly safe" answer

 

it's 99.99% perfctly safe.

 

Just remember though, that if you don't have the end plugged into your laptop/device, you do potentially have exposed the contacts. you do want to ensure that these contacts aren't going to be subject to moisture. Or animlas or anything that might accidentally short it and either electrocute or break something.

 

other than that though, yeah, perfectly harmless.

well i think it just depends on the charger. most good quality chargers should turn off once full and star charging agane once low enough but i read that cheap chargers will keep charging even if the battery is full wasting energy (like my electric hair trimmer...) i looked in to this a long time ago as i wanted a good battery charger to charge battery and spent like $80 on a charger... that i dont use....

 

only way to make a dum charger smart is to probably use a programed on/off outlet so it only charges like an hour a day or something

 

they make it dum so it can destroy it self faster so you can go buy a new one. called planed opalescence.

 

i would think a good laptop would pull power from the wall instead of the battery once its plugged in and pull power from the battery once its un plugged?

instead of pulling power from the battery and charging the battery as your using it?

I believe understand your question.

Leaving the power cord from the wall to the charger plugged in to the wall and removing (unplugging) that cord from the charger leaving the cord behind in the wall socket.

No, this will not inherently damage the charger. You may notice a spark/discharge when you plug it back into the charger from time to time and yes this can cause excess wear to the connections that will result in damage over time, but it will be negligible as long as it only occurs on occasion. I personally do not recommend this, but you can do it.

I have seen chargers fail over time if left plugged in pretty much 24/7 for like 2 years or so. But that's sort of an extreme example.

Also to add, if you're worried about battery health. See if your BIOS settings or if your laptop came with a utility to limit the maximum charge of your battery. Essentially what it should do is limit charging to ~60% as it's a happy medium for batteries while still providing a descent amount of juice for you. My workplace doesn't have this enabled in the HP BIOS which I suspect is why recently after a year and a half of having everyone work from home... we're now seeing an uptick of laptops getting pregnant... Supposedly the charging circuit should prevent overcharging, but I guess you can't completely rely on that if the laptop is plugged in 24/7.

Yea even if the laptop is disconnected, it's still drawing some power. It wouldn't be super hot like if you were charging or using it while running a game. But, it's still drawing something.

oh i mean when its not being used and is at full power. but any case i think we get the point. im asking because i got a laptop that i dont use....but do i let it discharge and only charge it when i want to use it or keep it charged all the time. (cant take the battery out)

and  leaving the plug connected at *all times* is questionable, because what when theres a storm, outage, etc… it seems kinda obsessive almost, also theres always a small risk with things on a cheap charger… i would definitely advise to unplug a laptop when its not in use and battery  is sufficiently charged.

So, the reason for mixed results, is because it depends on the laptop.

  • Some laptop uses a simple circuit where power is always pulled from the battery. Power charges the battery. So, the battery wares out over time as it is always drained and charged. Other laptops will switch power source when plugged in, to not consume the battery.
  • Some laptops have good charging circuit that takes good care of each cell in the batteries, others not.
  • Some laptops stop charging at 100%, and if drains a bit, it won't recharge it until the battery is below a certain percentage like 95% to help  reduce the ware of the battery.
  • Lithium-ion/poly batteries is an extremely broad term for a group of batteries technology. I guess you can see it as IPS panels in the LCD space. You have IPS, yes, but it splits down to (eIPS, E-IPS, H-IPS, P-IPS, and many more) just... without any sort of marketing terms. And each of these batteries are designed for specific purposes. This is why you can't use Tesla batteries to power a laptop. Well, you probably COULD, but they were not designed for such tasks. Hence why you can't use a normal lithium-ion battery of laptops or phones to power an electric car. Some Lithium-ion batteries are designed to not ware as much under heat, others are sensitive to heat. They all have different characteristics. So, if the manufacture chooses to put a battery that doesn't fit things right, like be sensitive to heat, and the battery is installed next to the CPU so that the battery doesn't last long and hope you replace your laptop early because of it, then sadly there is nothing one can do. So, all to say, laptops tend to consume more power and be less energy conserving when plugged in, and therefore create more heat, so plugged in with the battery, and a wrong battery technology was used, could accelerate the wear of the battery. For other laptops, it would be much less of a concern or even none.
  • Additionally, some laptops power supplies aren't up to the laptop power requirements. They depend on the battery to be there to operate at full capacity. For example, the laptop might need 90W under max load. But the laptop manufacture includes only a 65W one (cost cutting, and you have a smaller power supply to carry). The 65W is fine for most situation. But the day you'll push your laptop, it will not only use all 65W from what it can, but also consume the battery (if the battery isn't there, the laptop will not consume past 65W, and you'll miss on some performance).

So, you have many factors at plays, and so, we just don't know if it is good or not.

Even unplugging the battery, it is typically also not good. Lithium-ion batteries in laptops and phones tend to ages over time regardless if they are in used or not. This is why when finding replacement battery for a device, one must look for the manufacture date. If the battery was on a shelf for 2-3 years, it won't have the same life span as one newly manufactured one. Some needs to be charged and discharged to slow down this aging process. So, saying "keeping the battery at 40% charge unplugged" is partially a myth, especially that you can have batteries that have different characteristics that might make them prefer a different percentage.

 

So, as you can see, many variables comes to play and it is very difficult to know.

I worked for a company who built/designed small transformers. Yes leaving it plugged in can degrade the transformer.

However we are talking in measurments of years. So really you shouldn't have to worry until after about 7+ years.

This was from the main eng. who at that point had been building them for decades.

Yes he did also say that class 2 transformers are designed to fail to protect the device, and do so more often when plugged in with no load.

 

So if you are planning to keep your laptop for more than 5 years, maybe unplugg it. If under 5 years then I don't think you should have a probelm.

Sorry I don't have any proof to backup my claim just an old tech speaking from experiance saying I have only seen a handful of laptop chargers fail (less than 1%)

really depends on the software and hardware, some might not adjust in how to charge the battery so it can reduce the life time of your battery.

as in not staying 100% charged all the time, same with phones etc.
