Faking a police call is a great way to get YOU in trouble, not them.

If the resources are available, you can report it to the authorities as they are committing a crime.

That said it sounds like you are looking for another solution...

Unplug your server for a time, change your static ip... walk next door and punch him j/k?

Be realistic. The police are not going to do anything or know what to do. Contact the ISP, let them deal with it.

Right so you block all traffic coming from him. Just set this up at your router or gateway.

Holes plugged, problem solved.

That doesn't prevent a DDoS; the traffic still goes to OP's modem/router, consuming all inbound bandwidth, even if the traffic is never forwarded to LAN.

release your ip address, unplug your modem.. Hopefully your ip address goes back into the pool.. wait a few hours.. plug modem in, renew ip address.. see what happens..

Call your isp, have them clear the mac for your ip if you get the same ip address...

Reassess your standards of friendship?

Put in a real police call as your “friend” is committing a crime?
Block the IP via firewall(may only work temporarily)?
Get a new IP address?

1) Are you sure he is DDOSing you? How do you know?

2) What type of DDOS attack is it? Is he using up your bandwidth or something else.

3) How did he find your IP?

We need answers to those questions before we can give you any help.

If I see even one more person suggesting violence or other way to harm, cause injury etc. you can be sure that I will haunt your PMs or worse.

Is it really DoS (= them just pinging you from their connection) or DDoS (=them paying someone to mass-ping you)? To former you don't really have much options, not unless their service ToS states something like that being out of the question. If its latter, report them to their ISP. Thats 100% in violation of terms and will get their connection cut fast.

DDos is illegal under the cyber crimes act. and should be reported and all the police departments around the world will have a cyber team.

So many questions here...

How is this person your 'friend'?

Why is he attacking you?

You do realize what he is doing is pretty illegal in most places

Have you asked him to stop? Is he intentionally being malicious or does he think you two are 'playing around'?

I would seriously re-evaluate this 'friendship' and document everything

Many things are illegal but passed over by the police. Budget cuts have spread forces thin. They tend to place resources to other priorities.

I don't disagree about the legality of it, but think realistically about how that conversation would go...

OP- hello police, I'd like to report a crime.

POLICE- ok what happened?

OP- my friend DDOS'ed me

POLICE -...... Uh, can you please be more specific? What's ddos?

OP-my friend was mean to me on the internet.

POLICE -.... I..... Uh..... You.... Uh...... I am off duty now.

You report a crime on their website, you don't call them... unless it is an emergency or to the IC3 agency.

Not in my city... Where I live, you have a problem, you call or go in. (not sure what ic3 is - an American thing?)

Yes it is an American government agency.

While this is true, if the friend is really engaging in an attack of the scale/sophistication that would defeat a firewall

That's not how it works. A DDoS doesn't "defeat" a firewall. The point is in choking the bandwidth.

But it won't be affecting the server, because the server won't ever be receiving the requests.

Of course it will. If you only have, say, 100Mbps incoming bandwidth and someone is sending 100Mbps worth of traffic at you, it's irrelevant whether the traffic ever hits your server if it's still hitting your router or modem. All that traffic is STILL consuming the bandwidth, regardless of whether it goes anywhere else from the router/modem.

It would be interesting to see what @urbanzerdin did with all this information. Hasn’t responded since the OP.

BTW, aren’t ISPs able to detect activity like this and intervene to limit further attacks?
