29 year old struggling to feed himself seeking employment in IT

Saw the 13 year old posting about seeking work... for some reason.... not gonna try and unpack that one. 

 

Personally, I'm 29 and I was laid off 5 times during 2020 after only managing to to move from "homeless" to "technically not homeless" 

 

Not to diminish whatever he's got going on but I'm struggling to feed myself lol

 

Does anyone have any advice as far as seeking employment in IT in 2021?

 

In my city there is very few jobs in the field and high demand. I've got a full work from home set up ready to go, I've been part of the IT/PC community for years as a hobby, I have a BUNCH of personal experience but very little professional experience. 

 

Certifications are.... expensive to say the least. If anyone has some advice or resources that would be beneficial on this topic I would greatly appreciate it.

Edit 1-23-2021: Thank you all so much for the replies and the advice. I appreciate it so much. The big barrier seems to be my lack of professional experience and certifications. Back in 2016 I went to a tech school and learned the basics of coding, networking, and hardware. I learned a bit of C#, but not much more than the basics. The school I went to was ITT Technical Institute. If you know what happened with them you know I actually dodged a bullet by not graduating from there. Anyway, I DO have some experience with the basics and my own long time experience with the field as a hobby. My current plan is to find a position in something resembling IT in pretty much any company (maybe just something where I work on a computer. Low standards lol) once I start landing some checks I gatta study hard on CompTia and get that cert. I see that one most often and it looks like that's the low hanging fruit I can reach for first.

Really depends on where you're located. I can feel the struggle with being laid off; however, I can't say that I have experienced homelessness, or anything close to it because my parents still have bedrooms in the house. I am currently changing careers by taking a 2 year diploma program in IT at my local technology institute, because that's what employers expect here. You should try looking at what the employers look for as far as education goes. If they need credentials you might have to try to break in to the field through someone you know.

A cheap and easy certification is MTCNA  ( MikroTik Certified Network Associate ). It may not be much but its a place to start.

Sadly the most important qualification that will help you find a job in experience, sometimes even more than degrees.

 

I think you should start from simpler things and build yourself up. Maybe you can try applying in a department store selling computers/laptop and such.

 

You should also start making a proper professional CV with attention to detail. A proper CV can go a long way because most of the time its managers and directors that read them that may not have much technical knowledge and thus focus in the layout, in proper grammar or spelling mistake, if you seem presentable in your photo and other nonsense.

I will be blunt.

And most people will disagree with me.

 

Most jobs described as IT in most countries have little to do with IT.

Any SaaS (Software as a Service) company employs around 60%++++ support people who do dull jobs that at most require database scripting knowledge. But mostly revolve around answering emails. The main driver there is to look young and cheap. Being 29 is old in the IT world. We used to joke that an average IT career is about as long as a supermodels....... So mainly you are just expected to work for free.

Then you have a lot of sales people..... And maybe a couple of managers...... sadly most managers do not know much about their job or are only interested in playing politics. This jobs are always political and are given out to friends and political allies. Such jobs revolve around build pragmatic friendships and reputation either you start early at the university sort of like the junior wing of a political party. Or you learn to know the right people some other way usually this involves already being well off.

Programming sadly nowadays mostly revolves around being a cultural fit..... that and experience but most IT companies have way too many programmers that have very few clear defined tasks, and the whole development circle turns into a shitshow around politics funding and idiotic development stack issues that exist because one of the founders or one of the money givers is married to one of the technologies. 

There used to be entry level jobs with servers and hardware but most companies migrated to cloud so really very few infrastructure jobs left.

I think your only hope is to start creating an image. Stack profile and some sort of video and blog to maybe become a cultural fit.

You would be surprised how often I got viewed as a terrorist because I have no active social media profiles.

 

And I have a degree in IT and a MBA..... plus a decade of experience in project and product management and not exactly with small companies working with Microsoft Lufthansa Systems and others. Honestly most IT companies are shit show closer to a cult than to actual work. Yes I know jobs are hard to come by and basically the last growing segment is logistics as in lugging shit around for delivery. Or driving humans around. Well food will return but that is not exactly a great job either.

 

I think the last sure shot job at least here in Europe is taking care of the elderly. It will break your back and you will have to witness mental horrors daily. The pay is not great but it is a job.

 

Honestly man if you are looking to spend money to get a certificate or degree I would not recommend IT.

Go for construction specialise as much as possible. Sure the jobs are not great but you will have a chance as a contractor. I know tools are expensive but maybe you can partner with somebody? And yes you are getting up there in the years but maybe in a decade you can get to house flipping and own some property realistically that is one of the few options still left to be self made by grinding if you do not have the money. Everything else unless you have half a million to invest is just luck and gambling.

Don't be afraid to look into other industries. Here in mining, people are retiring faster than being hired. In a time with as much unemployment as is going around mining, mechanics, timber, etc are all short people.

I hardly seen anyone my age in IT......

The average age is below 30. If you are not in management or a technical lead by 30 then sadly it is just a lot cheaper to replace you than to keep you on.

But IT is mostly a lot of cheap dead end jobs..... The difference is it pays a bit better and you work in an office. But those 60% working support will never get a promotion and will just get replaced down the road. Sure maybe one in a hundred will rise to support lead or move to more technical roles like scripting I have also seen people take on simple web code but most dont...... And even if you do that is usually not a sustainable promotion path just a first step to change jobs down the line and hope you get into management somehow. 

 

Hell man I am from the ass end of the EU..... In search of cheap native English speakers our companies go and open support centers in UK in small towns where the classical blue collar industries died. The pay net here is around 900-1100 for entry level IT a one bedroom or a studio 36-42 m2 costs around 550 a month just rent plus bills.(minimal wage is around 610 Euros net) For 1300 net or even 1200 net they get someone from the UK who speaks better English. And brexit will probably accelerate that trend. UK went through a similar deindustrialisation like the USA remember Thatcher and Reagan? London is the most expensive well paid city in the EU. But if you leave out Eastern Europe and the new EU states then out of the 10 poorest places in the EU 7 are in the UK.

The USA is big enough to have the same dynamics as the EU just between states also similarly diverse taxation and legislation as EU member states look at Delaware and the off shoring there....   

 

If you want to go into IT you need to go into contracting or some sort of image media YouTube career.....

If you really want to work in IT, get certificates and get after it. 

I also highly recommend learning some programming languages.

Certifications are nice but they aren't everything. It's always good to have them, but if you can't afford them, one thing that would matter way more is your portfolio. If you are into programming, learn the most demanded languages/technologies in your area, and when you're done, develop a project and add it to your portfolio. You can also create a GitHub account and participate in open source projects.

 

You can use the same approach for many other areas.

Holy shit so many people have a negative outlooks on life. If I was in your position I would immediately start shotgunning my resume to anyone and everyone. Look for cities where IT is in demand. If you are 29 you should have some work experience which will help you land a job. Be optimistic, be confident, and be very flexible. Depending on your academic credentials you may be behind the 8 ball but that's not to say you won't get a job. Try and make a 5 year plan and start becoming very conservative with your money. If you get an offer for something that interests you, do whatever it takes to get the job. Once you start building a savings and have industry experience you can start moving up or looking at ways to get to the career you would like. It potentially could be very hard and you'll have to be someone's bitch for 5+ years but if you realize your self worth and have a goal in mind you'll be able to set aside sub optimal conditions today for a greater tomorrow.

My advice to you is to get the best job you can get with your current experience and education, and use it to support yourself while you get the necessary certifications (or find a way to switch careers). If becoming an ice truck driver pays better and enables you to fund your future education and improve your long-term prospects, do it. 

 

If costs of life are killing you, move back in with your parents or find people who need roommates and split the costs with them. Seduce a wealthy woman and have her support you. Whatever it takes, man.

You do have to think of this from the OPs point of view. Its very hard to be able to set aside "sub-optimal" living conditions for a "greater tomorrow", especially if you are struggling to feed yourself, I wouldn't call this a negative outlook on life either, OP has found himself in a all-round bad situation but is clearly trying to face up to reality and get out there in the job market. However I do agree with what you are saying about being optimistic, having a plan and looking after money properly and smartly. My advice would be to really try and get out there and start working it out step by step, even if its just having to start taking online courses and taking on a low paid job.

Especially now. I have to move toward something that is. Life is gonna suck for a while but im kinda used to it after 2020. Im pretty much doing everything suggested in the comments. Gatta keep my eye on the ball but gatta feed myself in the mean time. Life just sucks through and through lol. I'm not on the street knee deep in pandemic filth anymore so thats something lol

As much as I hate reddit I suggest going to the r/personalfinance subreddit and posing the same question. They'll be able to help you budget and maybe use some governmental incentives to help you out. You aren't alone with this kind of struggle and it's good you are taking action now before you truly have no home or even way to access the internet.

A lot of churches will help you with all kinds of things. Some with food, getting a car donated and even housing.

 

Swallowing pride is tough, but better than being hungry or living on the street.

 

Finding a temp agency can get you into employment. It's not about what you want to do for work like IT, it's about having some cash flow every week and getting back on the feet enough to find the job you do want.

 

Nothing is easy. Ever. Keep a head up and keep on going is all anyone can do.

Ignore this debbie downer. I'm in my early 30s with little to no experience or education in the IT field but last year I had an opportunity to sit down for a job interview at a local IT business, and everybody who worked there were 40+ and making a good living. I was honest about my tech abilities and ultimately passed on the job because I just don't have enough passion or willingness to get the education for it, but the door was certainly open for me at 32... Don't let your age be a deciding factor, it's not uncommon for people to start all new careers in their late 30s and 40s.

 

Instead of just browsing job listings online and sending out resumes I wouldn't be afraid to reach out directly to surrounding tech/IT businesses to ask about any openings, what kind of certifications/experience they want, etc. Make connections, show you can speak well over the phone, sell yourself as much as you can and maybe you'll be able to get your foot in the door somewhere. Or if you can land a temp job at some big corporation that has their own IT department that might be a way to nose your way in. Don't give up.

Some times you have to take what you can get. 

 

That all being said. My buddy has a Associates in Web design. However he currently works in IT for a major Insurance company. Specifically works on their Linux team. I know that he has had several call center jobs. Thats generally the way in the door. He actually started as a call center rep at his current employer, as a contract to hire position. He eventually got hired and worked his way to where he is. Has several certs, some he got while at other jobs and some he got while at his current. 

 

Try looking at Temp/Staffing agencies. Lots of employers go that route to find employees. My company for instance exclusively uses temp agencies to find both permanent and temp workers. That actually how I got hired in where I work, was thru a temp agency.

As others have said, look at IT work in other industries or try working with small or mid sized businesses just to get more experience on paper. A common thing I've seen done with those I used to work with in software or network engineering is to apply for remote jobs out of state. That has seen greater success for them than trying to work within their state or city

What kind of jobs are available?  Do some research about an organization which is hiring, and see if you can get a job interview, or if you know anyone who works for one of them and see if they might be able to give you a reference. 

 

My advice would be to get into any technical support role, and move your way up from there.  Certifications and degrees aren't really necessary if you enter a job as service desk. 

 

People say that the service desk is a trap, I've personally found it to be a great stepping stone and it gives you a lot of valuable experience.

Now, if you really are willing to put in the effort to get all trained up for working, I'd suggest trying out something like Free Code Camp Learn to Code for Free – Coding Courses for Busy People (freecodecamp.org) 

 

It's completely free and non-profit, they have a lot of great things on there for looking for work and building projects that can actually look good on a resume.  

 

The fact is that programming, scripting whatever is a very important part of IT.  In the IT opeerations, even technical support roles we have to start thinking like developers.  By going along with Free Code Camp you can build a developer mindset.  That means get a good set of analytical skills, and good overall knowledge of systems and infrastructure. 

 

Companies will love you if you can:

• Prove you can code (freecodecamp)
• Understand Systems Infrastructure and basic Automation workflows (you'll be able to learn that on freecode camp, and some of their companion tutorials. eg: High availability, Clustering, Databases, Code Execution Engines, Software-Defined Infrastructure, Linux).
• Have proven you have completed a course, with a certificate and projects to back you up. - this is one of the best reasons to go with free code camp. 

 

I have personally done a bit of free code camp before, I think it's great. There are lot of success stories too. 

 

Companies need people who know how to work with cloud, cloud providers are everywhere and even though it's used a lot by the industry a lot of traditional IT businesses, even just companies in general just don't have a skilled enough work force to utilize it.  

 

By working with and deploying code, you can prove that you have what it takes to take on cloud.  If you have freecodecamp cert behind you, even though it's no uni it will be enough to show that you are committed, and you have been taught by an actual programme.

ServiceNow is a cloud platform that hosts business-to-business applications. You need to be able to code in Javascript ES5 and their learning stuff is free (including the System Administrator Certification, provided you do their course first).

 

I can tell you that there's quite a high demand for developers that use this platform worldwide, and it opens you up for remote work. In fact I believe you have more chances to land a remote job than onsite, and they tend to pay decently.

I do hear you.

 

I had an IT career in my 20's doing field service work and after almost a decade of playing the bi-annual layoff whoever was at the top of the pay tier brackets I had enough and moved over to the defense sector.

 

I mainly push paper for large IT defense projects now but its 9-5, pays well and has excellent job security and benefits. Sucks because I don't get to play with any gear anymore but the tradeoffs overall have been worth it.

 

Long answer short, don't pigeon hole yourself into a career field that is not playing out for you.

I had an IT career in my 20's doing field service work and after almost a decade of playing the bi-annual layoff whoever was at the top of the pay tier brackets I had enough and moved over to the defense sector.

 

I mainly push paper for large IT defense projects now but its 9-5, pays well and has excellent job security and benefits. Sucks because I don't get to play with any gear anymore but the tradeoffs overall have been worth it.

Yeah I've been working on a "plan B" just in case. These are less than stable times.
