UPDATED : Possible Hostage situation at Ubisoft Montreal - confirmed swatting hoax

agatong55

Summary

A group of suspects would hold dozens of people hostage, Friday afternoon, in Montreal, in a building that houses the premises of the Ubisoft company, on Saint-Laurent Boulevard.

Quote:

The operation would have started around 1:30 p.m., according to a witness on the spot.

Dozens of police, including the tactical intervention group, are on site.

The SPVM has not confirmed or given more details on the large-scale operation that is underway.

Employees would be embarrassed in a conference room, according to our sources. Others are said to have fled through the roof.

My thoughts

Scary situation, hope everyone is alright there.

Can someone with better English please go through the sources and put a better summary together.

No offence to the OP btw. I cant speak, write, or read anything but English and thanks to my Dyslexia and Dysphoria without a keyboard and spellcheck it would be even harder to make sense of so i totally get thats it's not intentional or desired.

Not saying I would resent you for that, but it's Ubisoft. Montreal is literally the babysitter of game series's, so I'm sure you can find another studio

Either @piratemonkey or quote me when responding to me. I won't see otherwise

I don't really care what you think of me. I can work wherever I want and money is money.
But the time investment of working for Ubisoft is just too much.

"street rep" is great but I worked there 7 years, and when I left I got a better salary at the new job, and had a stable 40h work schedule, vs 60h+ in crunch time (twice a year, if not more on smaller projects).

So yeah.

I'm just screwing with you. Honestly I don't care where you work as long as you're safe and stuff. Fwiends don't let fwiends be unsafe, right

Still no details from the SPVM (Montreal Police), lots of people have barricaded themselves on the roof (they have a terrasse on the roof), and apparently some employees were able to get out of the building.

They blocked the whole neighborhood, nobody can get near for now.

SWAT team just arrived.

Most of the coverage is in French, will post English source when found.

* thread moved to the General section *

it's news, just not about technology, but about a hostage situation that happens to be in a tech HQ.

Do we actually know its a hostage situation? This is Ubisoft, its just as likely to be a group of disgruntled employees going postal over crunch, abuse, non payment of bonuses... Pick your poison and I'm sure its happened there at some point.

If the news sites are correct they asked a ransom. Which makes it very likely that it is indeed a hostage situation.

I feel like hostage situation is the apt term to describe the situation at this point

A French local news channel (LCN) said it's possible there are no real threats.

The police officially declared there are no victims as of now.

it's very possible, yes. But there's information that the call to the police came from inside Ubisoft HQ.

So does that mean no one who can be a victim is in the building, or that there's no threat
