Food & Cooking

whm1974

I let some Homeless young woman last year fry some eggs. But she took three young eggs and added some milk and made scramble eggs instead. While I upset about her using three eggs instead of two, at least I learned something...

Anyway I was kind late about eating after taking Diabetic Meds, so I decided to make a Omelette for dinner. A small can of mushroom bits and pieces, another can of sliced black olives, milk, six eggs, and mixed that in a bowl, then pour in hot small skillet with melted butter, turn the heat up.

Forgot the to add the seasoning in the bowl, so while cooking, a few shakes of salt, Tabasco sauce, garlic powder. While I didn't like the taste, I did let it cool a bit long before eating. Didn't add any black pepper...

This morning I did add in that and microwave the meal ~200 minute and came out fine.

Next time I will slice and dice some raw onions and use that instead of the Olives...

Did I use too many eggs or milk? This is my first time making one. How do you make yours?

Omlets are usually 2-3 eggs, not 6.

well, i would rather say 4 eggs and lots of other ingredients

Possible options are:

  • Meat
  • Sausage
  • feta cheese and scallions
  • tomatos
  • bell pepper
  • potato
  • spinach

and literally every other food component there is, since the egg flavour is so overpowering, its will mostly taste like egg in the end 😄

6 is fine. Depends on the size of the omelette.

Can't go wrong with mushroom, green onion, cherry tomatoes, spinach and chorizo.

Well in my case, the black olives were more overwhelming... And the Omelette wasn't piping hot...

The six eggs was only due to what I added in. Next time I won't using sliced black olives. Just Mushroom Bits, Minipepper slices, and Onions.

Depending on the amount of ingredients, less eggs needed...

I'm a traditional omelet guy.  3 eggs, onions, ham, cheese.  Maybe a little picante salsa drizzled over when done.

I can be talked into a Shitake mushroom and steak omelet tho, doesn't take much 🙂

I make the traditional, my sig other is the pro at the other.   But we make them similarly with 3 eggs usually.

This the first time I made an Omelette before. Do I need butter in the frying pan?

Good question, but I'm certain that I've seen someone share an image of that in one of your other food-related threads. Wasn't that some kind of military dish that contained bologna?

Vegetable Omlette from a US Ration. Worse than it sounds and looks

Feta cheese goes really good in an omelette or in scrambled eggs. Scrambled eggs on toast is a perennial favorite.

I know that Feta is supposed to made from Goat Milk, but in the US, Food Standards are not up the PDO Standards of other Nation-States.

Sounds more like an American Omelette than a traditional Omelette.

And what is a "Traditional" Omelette anyway? Or for that matter an American one?

I love french style omelettes. There is just something about the custard like center that triggers my lizard brain and makes me crave them in the morning. I have recently started making them like this.

If you want to incorporate them into this style of omelette, you totally could. Just dice your peppers, onions, and shrooms. Toss them in a pan on medium heat and lightly saute them with some butter. Then you can add them before you roll it together if you want them on the inside, but I would personally just use them as toppings.

Also, I use similar eggs that I get from my family's chickens, but store bought eggs work great too. It really is more about developing a good curd to crust ratio. That is where the flavor comes from.

Is no one going to comment on the fact they microwaved their eggs for over 3 hours?

The American (or diner style omelette) is seen above. It typically comes in a crescent or rectangular shape.  It is made by pouring beaten eggs into a pan, cooking them for a little bit, then you add toppings on one half and fold shut. It is usually not as liquidy as a french omelette, but it should not be totally dry. Overdone, dry eggs are a travesty.
