You can ring up tech support and they can change it for you. Anyways if you take the time you can block anyone from using your internet in ways you don't approve.

why not just buy him the game he wants? if it is only steam unlocked and the game is reasonably priced, why not just buy it?

Yeah. Its enough to stream youtube @ 720p, but a game download will be unbearible. For an added bonus, coppy rthe boot drive to a secong hdd, and format the boot, so that there is only 50gb of space. Unplug all other drives.

Your best option is to go into the router and just block the site at that point. You may need to straight up blackhole the ip address. If your ISP router is anything like what ISP's have been handing out over the last 10 years, the admin password is on the back of it, and your kid would be able to undo it behind your back.

 

A secondary way would be to just block all traffic from his computer and run it through a proxy device you setup so that any attempts to reach it are blocked, just make sure the router is like literately locked in box somewhere so it can't be bypassed.

 

If you want to really aim for the punishment route, just take the computer away and don't allow it to be used unsupervised.

 

If he installs games he got for free, have him show you where he got them from and if he didn't buy them, make him wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows.

Just an idea, but maybe you could setup a custom server that pretends it is that site. When he tries to download a file, make a .exe that formats the drive.

Not too sure how difficult this would be due to https and encryption, but worth a shot

Potentially having an external drive as a "game drive" that games can be loaded on to from a machine with a proper internet connection (steam can do this with library folders) that can be taken away if he crosses a line?

This doesn't solve the problem but make sure he is using a VPN otherwise you may get some fun letters in the mail.

The HDD idea would also work, get a 40GB drive and enjoy the pain. That or using the plain old chancla method.

You've seen many replies about how to do this technologically. I am not a magic man and I won't have any advice that's easier or better than the sum of those replies.

Have you thought about trying to find out why your child is doing this? 

Generally, every problem has a solution, usually that solution is tied to why the thing is a problem in the first place.

Honestly the first thing I would do is delete all of the pirated games from the computer. I'm surprised you haven't had a call from your ISP about it yet, if he keeps doing it you likely will, could possibly even get black listed and your service terminated or worse depending on how serious your ISP takes it, but 20 or so pirated games would be an issue with pretty much any ISP especially if they get contacted legally about it by the games distributor or the anti piracy guys, which does happen fairly often. My roommate in college was pirating games and movies at an alarming rate, not using a VPN either. I payed for the internet and it was in my name, got a call from my ISP one day saying they had been contacted by multiple companies anti piracy divisions about it. I explained that it was likely my roommate and that I would get him to stop, ISP said if it happened again they'd terminate my contract and black list me. He stopped or at least started using a VPN to do it, and a little while after that we had it switched to his name when I moved out anyway, but either way you can get in serious trouble for it. It's thousands of dollars in fines and possible jail time. If this was me when I was 12 my dad would have taken the computer away indefinitely for even doing it once, if I continuously kept doing it after he told me not to, that's a whole different story. Personally like I previously said I'd delete all the pirated games and then block the site, explain to him what could happen with the fines and jail time, which you would have to pay and serve not him. Not to mention the risks of downloading viruses and malware doing that. If he tries to get around it or continues to do it take the computer away completely, you need to have some sort of punishment in place until you find a sure fire way of blocking the sites.

Personally like I previously said I'd delete all the pirated games and then block the site, explain to him what could happen with the fines and jail time, which you would have to pay and serve not him. Not to mention the risks of downloading viruses and malware doing that. If he tries to get around it or continues to do it take the computer away completely, you need to have some sort of punishment in place until you find a sure fire way of blocking the sites.

Some smaller ISPs don't care.

One thing you could do that would be pretty simple is draft up a fake letter from your ISP saying that they detected illegal downloads/piracy and if they detect it again they will pursue legal action. It might put enough fear into him to make him stop, or then again if he keeps ignoring and bypassing you it might not. But it's worth a shot and wouldn't be too hard to do.

Prevention is fine but there is no perfect prevention. At some point, you want deterrence as well. He broke the rules, you caught him and told him not to do it again, then he did it again, and now you've caught him again. I'd think the next step is to show him that he may bypass your countermeasures, but that doesn't equate bypassing consequences.

 

I'd rather not give specific parenting advice because every family is different, and also because I doubt the modern-day internet is willing to accept what older people considered to be good parenting.
