Chrome will use new Windows feature to reduce RAM hogging nature

TempestCatto

Chrome is known as a RAM hog. But why? Well, Chrome splits every tab and extension into its own process, so if one thing crashes, it doesn't bring down the whole web page or all of your open tabs at once. This also causes Chrome to duplicate some tasks for every tab, and thus, it eats more RAM than you can ever hope to download.

Quote

With the latest version of Windows 10 (the May 2020 Update), Microsoft introduced Segment Heap memory management improvements (originally only for “Modern” apps and some system apps such as Edge)  which can help to reduce the memory usage to Win32 apps.

Wonder if this might do anything for gaming.

Quote

“Experiments with per-machine opting-in to the segment heap for chrome.exe suggests that this could save hundreds of MB in the browser and Network Service utility processes, among others, on .some machines. Actual results will vary widely, with the greatest savings coming on many-core machines,”

"Hundreds of megabytes" yeah, so doesn't sound like all that much saved then, huh.

Quote

The feature will roll out once Google is able to build Chrome with the Windows 10 Build 19041.0 SDK, though this is currently blocked due to unexplained build failures.

So it could take some time, but probably not too long.

I've been using Firefox for a very long time now. I switched mostly because of stability issues I was having with Chrome at the time. I much prefer FF, especially because Google's ol' mantra of "don't be evil" is now lost to the ether. Even after this "feature" rolls out, I will still stick with FF.

depends on the context. if you only have 4gb like many low end machines still do a few hundred megabytes is a LOT

Definitely helps the average Joe more than a gamer or enthusiast, as they're less likely to have RAM room to spare and overkill parts.

I only have 16GB of RAM, and Chrome is taking up only 1GB of the 50% usage (thus system + progs taking 7GB more) I'm currently at right now with 16 tabs open.

The ram eating nature of chrome isn’t what bugs me about it.  It’s the data collecting nature.  Nothing is free, and the stuff that people pretend is free is generally the most expensive stuff.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Look into Cent Browser.

All the Chrome, none of the Big Brother.

Which is weird, IIRC LTT ran a youtube video on this and I couldn't replicate their results.

I had 200 tabs open and barely cracked the 4GB usage mark. Perhaps it's just because I run lots of ad-blockers and script-blockers, but I've seen heavier RAM usage out of Firefox. Shrug, YMMV.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Is no one gonna note that this just optimizes it for Windows?  As in, Chrome is still gonna suffocate its namesake ChromeOS and Chromebooks.  😂😂

I downloaded all the RAM I could find t0rr3ntz for but all I got was a funny screen and a phone number telling me to call tech support.

Back to reality:

Not to sound like a shill, but I like Brave quite a bit. I've noticed that it actually does use less RAM than Chrome does. I wonder if this update will be able to be incorporated into Brave? That would be really nifty.

Not really. Firefox, as the only non Chromium based browser seems to use the least resources. I'm using it on a hybrid netbook that only has 2GB of RAM and I really need to have tons of tabs open to have a RAM related slowdown because then it all pages to storage medium which is eMMC and that one suuuuuucks. Chrome has been a fat pig since beginning and given you need to use tons of extensions to make it even half usable, every extra extension sucks up so much memory it's not even funny.

Coincidentally enough, the new Edge (based on Chromium) got pushed to my gaming desktop yesterday. Haven't used it yet, probably wont. Someone else can see if that behaves any better. No problems with regular Chrome on modern systems. CPU usage is more of a problem for me than ram usage on older systems.
