With the posting of this, we have now concluded the event. If you would like to continue folding I ask that you pop over to the Folding Community Board!

@TVwazhere or @leadeater can one of you guys lock this thread please now.

Thank you everyone, see you again soon!

Happy folding,

It's the right move.   If you already have a 2080ti awesome... fold away.

But if you're building folding rigs the 2060 Supers are a great value and you can get 4 for the cost of one 2080ti getting 8 Mil PPD almost compared to the 2080tis 4.1 mil.

Of course you then have the slot issue and building additional systems... but everyone here probably likes building computers ;)

Well I was building a new system just to fold and I had 600 as a budget for GPU power and after looking at the PPD for differeent cards 2 X 2060 seemed the best idea. You have a higher power cost using 2 cards over 1 but it's not really that much.

My 1070 constantly gives 15-20% above average and I'm still wondering how knowing it's a single fan ITX model in a 4.7L case along with a 9900K also folding with 8 threads :)

Because many people run other things that chew the GPU too

I have nowhere near the same difference on my 2080S though, I'm about 5% in the green when careful about not letting stuff chewing GPU (animated GIF avatars on this forum are a good culprit, falls to 5 in the red when some are displayed!

So maybe all other 1070 owners are not careful, but...

It could also be that someone is folding 1070s 24/7 but with low power targets or under clocked so you look like a rockstar.

Also silicon lottery... I had an EVGA ITX single fan 1060 that would crush an EVGA dual fan 1060 SC Gaming that cost 100 more... that was maddening.

Edit:  In this case the ITX one was using samsung RAM while the SC card used hyix which seemed to be the only difference.

Wow nice...

TBH I've always wondered why there weren't more ITX cards since obviously they can get the same performance in that size than a full size beast :/

OK it's a bit more noisy, but meh...

I've always been curious if they are better binned chips, so they have a better power-performance ratio

If my day job is any indicator... marketing.

Some of the best folding cards I have used are Zotac minis... they just work... they are small and show an ugly pcb, making lots of noise with two smaller fans on an ITX sized card.

But marketing...

Someone feels like they really bought something that comes in a big box... that's heavy... with a giant heatsync 2-3 big fans... an extra 6 pin needed on top of the 8 pin... RGB FOR FPS GLORY!!!  OMFG METAL BACKPLATE!!!!

And it's the same processor and ram and wattage as the ugly mini card for 150-250$ more.

Like does a 2060 Super need the same 3 fan, 3 slot cooler as as a 2080ti... no... but it feels like a chonkey boy when you unbox it..

@LAR_Systems Pretty cool chrome extension, thanks !

I got my trusty vega56 crunching away, dang that thing is a space heater...

Not going crazy this time 🙃 sick at home 😷 (covid negatif) with 30°C in the study, can't really push much more than that. If I find the energy (or the itch grow too much) I might connect on my work account sometimes and then... 😜

Good folding you all, and as usual big thanks to @GOTSpectrum and his little helpers for organizing all that !

I am actually stuck at like 70% production for reasons mostly unexplained, and some mildly self inflicted

My 2080ti at work has run 24/7 for some time, always able to be in beta or advanced, and would always run non stop without fail.  It has great airflow, great temps, and no overclock (and a good PSU).  It is now failing stuff all the time in advanced and beta queues and I dont have a good reason for it.  I used to happily sit at 4.9-5.5 mil ppd between the GPU's and now due to that one failing and then sitting their idle, im stuck at like 3.5m.  I wonder if that GPU is pooping out (would be sad, its only been folding for a few months).  Latest drivers, and plays games flawlessly with good clocks and temps, but it being annoying as hell with folding.  I dunno.

Then on my home rig...well games have to be played, they just have to sometimes :) that part is self imposed.

Are you overclocking the 2080ti? I've had a few project 14201 failed due to OC settings which were fine on other projects.

The next is that those cards are running on Linux mint and getting higher PPD than they did on Windows.

Is it easy to get them to work on Linux Mint?

Pretty straightforward unless you're dealing with AMD drivers.

Yeah, I had no idea really.

Was trying to fix a bug reported in the extension that was being reported on Linux... so had to get a folding machine running with chrome so I could see and fix the bug.

So download mint, flash to USB... plug that in to a system... install mint... install NVIDIA drivers, install F@H service and client... chrome took all about an hour to get running.

The only catch I ran in to was the system I was doing it on had onboard graphics and a dedicated GPU... so when setting up the folding flow in the F@H advanced client I had to manually set the slot IDs to not be 0 but 1 so it would skip over the integrated and run the slot on the 2060 super.

If you have a navi card or newer, you may have better luck with some threads here but they're mostly based around Ubuntu. I had a horrid time trying to get R9 290s to fold no matter the amdgpu pro or mesa drivers I had installed (crucially you need updated opencl drivers). The furthest I got was getting WUs to download but they would fail instantly.

I am able to get my HD 7750 folding under Linux using the AMDGPU Pro drivers (I have not tested the latest, only up to 20.10). Metallus97's thread over here detailed some instructions, but there are also a few tricks which I have also commented there in order to get my aging card working.

Gorgon's thread over here describes instructions for Ubuntu.

Ya my other 2080ti has been nothing but problems.  Either failing everything or in forever queues of pause restart.  It seems to be doing ok now on only normal WU's, but it seems to just be sitting mostly idle now.

Was getting a reliable 4.5m minimum daily, into the 5.5-6mil daily range for a while, and now that GPU crapping out on me for FAH is hurting :( At least it still games perfectly.

The 3x 3080ti's I buy when they launch will have me stronger than ever though bigfoot!!!
