CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — With just under 17 minutes to go, SpaceX decided to postpone its historic first astronaut launch on Wednesday due to severe weather in the region.

The launch director announced the Demo-2 mission was a scrub out of an abundance of caution for the safety of the crew on board. It would have been the first time NASA astronauts launched with SpaceX and the first time NASA has launched its own crew since 2011.

 

Before the weather delay, the SpaceX countdown was smooth and without technical hurdles or hitches for an estimated launch time of 4:33 p.m. ET. The rocket has to launch at a specific time because it needs to send the spacecraft on a trajectory that will meet the International Space Station in orbit around the Earth.

The company will try again to launch the Demo-2 mission on Saturday at 3:22 p.m. ET.

This will be the first time in years since an American Astronaut has flown in an american made rocket ever since the space shuttle project ended and NASA had to reply on Russian rockets.

Since the space shuttle program retired almost 10 years ago, the U.S. has paid Russia more than $80 million per seat to fly NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. But in partnerships with SpaceX and Boeing under a program called Commercial Crew, NASA hopes it can reduce those costs by teaming up with private industry.

Thoughts: Exciting indeed, if all goes will it would certainly develop at a new speed like never before. Can't wait to see what other companies have to offer as well considering Vigin galactic got into trouble again.

Sadly, not today   The worst part is the weather guy seemed to think that if they had ten more minutes, it would possibly clear up, but that actually breaks the rules. So no go.  Hopefully saturday!

That makes a lot of sense.  From trying to wrangle intercept orbits in KSP, I know just how critical the timing is (read: I have never actually succeeded)

So they fully can have a not tight launch window but it means more adjustments in space to make the spacecraft line up.

Go watch any KSP player and they don't launch perfectly but they make it up by correcting in orbit.

it isn't that hard and if you had something like mechjeb you'd be closer to what nasa has which is the ability to compute exactly what is needed.

I'm not currently but I do have multiple in my family and I was studying to be one at one point.

I'll add a little more context. I wasn't talking about the stock game which is so easy a 5 year old can play. but a modded version scaled to earth with the parts following actual real performance information.

I sure hope space flight is rapidly privatized so we don't have to hope the next government will keep funding it, or suddenly stop funding it and end it almost overnight for 10 years
