BOINC Pentathlon 2020

Just ran the numbers, going to cost me $250+ for the 2 weeks for this 😱

Of the 72C/144T at my disposal running for a full month even I only increase the bill by $50~75 and electricity isn't exactly cheap here. What do you pay where a pair of X5xxx servers is going to cost you that much for half the time?

Think it might be best to put CPUs back on Rosetta.

It's 2670v1 + 2x 2630v2 + 2x X5650 + 2x X5650 + 2x X5650 + 4930k & 2x 290X

Alright that's a little bit more reasonable. Still what's your $/kWh?

Update: We're back on Rosetta, at least now I have overnight to submit all the work before they expire.

With how "affordable" 2690v1s are now, would you say it's worthwhile seeking a 2P board for them? At least in terms of PPD for folding, I don't think it's too far off from Zen+ chips but just wondering if there's any benefits of running xeons.

Unless you have an alternative motive I wouldn't invest in Xeons for BOINC/F@H. If you must I'd go for the 2670v1's. They can be found quite a bit cheaper. Better bang for your buck.

Hi all... been reading as much as I can to catch up... got my clients setup, doing the marathon.

Just wanted to confirm... there is no personal registration, sign up, etc. to be counted in the event...  from what I gather the event scores are based on the teams, so as long as i'm running Bonic/Rosetta with my team set as LTT... I'm good to go?

Once again for the second time. Now bunkering Rosetta.

Forgot to update the protocol though...eh, screw it so long as it remains good for 2 days and 5 hours.

numbers bunkering is going quite well, already 84 task trying to upload 🤪. On average they take 8min on a 2070.

Everything else is running rosetta

Waiting for the IBM heatsink to arrive, IBM x3500 M4 requires an extra board for the 2nd CPU socket which I got ages ago and never installed then went to use it last week and realized in typical IBM fashion everything is separate so ordering the FRU CPU upgrade is not enough.

But all those Xeons were free so no better value than that 😉

Nope.  CPU.  Not a super hard one to run either.  It is one though that loves faster core clock.  In the past I did a test between my 1900X and my 5960X.  The 5960X at 4.6GHz spit those out like mad.  And, that was it under W7 Ult and the 1900X under Mint Mate.  Could be different now with the newer WUs.  I need to get my new used 5960X (previous 5960X died) going and re-do checking it against my 1900X (since the mobo has a newer BIOS flashed to it).

Thinking of picking up a Noctua DH-15 to get the 5960X back online the quickest.  I do have water blocks just ugh, tube bending.

In mean time, going to see about loading BOINC on Xeon E5-2670V3 that is under CentOS 7.  No GPU in that one atm, but.....hmmmmmmmmm, stares at the darn Titans I have not manage to sell off.   :I  My room though is suana level heat already as Florida weather is already getting to that lovely hot Spring/Summer heat.  Have AC, but oof, it drinks electricity like it is going out of style, so I typically just endure the inside of the townhouse at 83F/28.3C.  Computer room is probably closer to 85F/29.4C.

What are our plans? We going to focus on an event to do well or just average across the board much like how last year turned out? I think we have more chance placing well in City Run than Marathon but I like the idea of doing well in the marathon more, but it makes no differences to event points.

What worries me is now many people have Ryzen and TR now, average compute power could be like double last year.

Hmmm, can't stop completely on Marathon, but yes, higher potential as a team we can nab some serious spots in City Run.  Really going to depend how the first few days look and what teams are outputting.

Though, hmmmm, Javelin is a GPU one.  So, it is not seriously eating into our CPU output.  Could go super hard for those first three throws and then just focus more on the other events afterwards.  Or, space out for Javelin when I think about it, probably not a smart move to do our best on the first three as that could allow other teams later to see how much they need to output there to beat us in some spots.

For the javelin I just spun up a T4 unfortunately cannot access better at the moment. Might have a P100 or a V100 free at some point but nothing certain (I also want to see how fast those spit the jobs for the fun of it).

The T4 is at about 9min per job.

I also need to figure out how to get the cpu working on a different project than the gpu (the T4 comes with 4vcores and I currently have an i7 on numbers instead of something more useful)

On the project settings/preferences on the website just deselect CPU jobs if you don't want them, that's the easiest way if you don't intend to run CPU jobs at all on any system.

So I might have access to 1 or 2 32 cores computation unit.  On what should they be focused?

Check out how long the expire time is on Universe@Home is then maybe if you can get a queue long enough bunker all the way to the start of that.

Okay, manage to wrangle the E5-2670V3 under CentOS 7 minimal.  A bit of learning experience since I rarely use BOINC through terminal.

Anywho, Xeon is now happly crunching at Rosetta.  Now to see how much that bothers the MC test server that is hosted on it.

And yeah, Rosetta being a RAM hog.

@leadeater This is a little off topic (really off topic) but do you have any experience with network switches kind of boot-looping/resetting every 20~30 seconds?

Dead forever or is it a common fault where it's in the rhelm of fixable?
