BOINC Pentathlon 2020

Just an FYI I ended up trying 2 tasks per gpu on numberfields, and it seems to work fine. I won't know for sure until I submit the work, but seems to run fine and despite running 2 tasks at once it didn't affect times much, so overall it should be faster. I did this on 2060 super and 2080 ti. The 2080 ti may be able to handle 3 per gpu, but utilization is high enough and that starts eating up threads pretty quick, since each task still gets 1 cpu thread. config info below for anyone that might want to try. you can create in notepad and save in the project subfolder in Boinc folder under Windows ProgramData folder. Example file path     C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\numberfields.asu.edu_NumberFields

app_config.xml to improve the GPU load (example for 2 WUs per GPU, one CPU core should be kept free for each WU):

Code:

I do not see the code for app_config.xml in your post. Interested in it!

It seems numberfields doesn't utilize all of the gpu, most are sitting around 50% usage, is there any way to boost usage?

  • Are you using a VPN, by any chance?
  • Is your email listed in a spammer's database? (Check on Stop Forum Spam.)

1. No special characters, and nothing in junk folders.

2. No VPN, but I do have a uBlock and a password manager, both of which I disabled in Chrome extensions when I retried.

3. No, neither of my emails are (and there is no reason they should be).

The form doesn't even give any errors, the page just reloads and nothing else happens. It's very strange.

@Windows7ge I finally got it to work, what probably did it was changing WiFi networks, although I don't know how that changed anything.

Edit: I guess it could have been disabling F@H for my GPU, but I don't know.

Forgot where I was asking. I'm a hacker in my house and this is powering my desktop, work from home laptop setup, and peripherals. I don't think I've got an opinion on any of those other than standard NEMA 5-15 plug. Old system was 1300 VA and had a few switched surge only outlets which was really nice for shutting down monitors when not in use but otherwise I'm not picky. I would say cut-over is fine.

Budget, I want to stay under 300 if possible. The APC I had lasted about 10 years with just battery changes so I'm inclined to go that route since it was pretty damn reliable but it's failure mode was rather... disappointing.

Something basic that meets those criteria would be the APC BR1300G. It's a fairly basic unit. It's only Square Wave so you'll hear the buzzing from the coils in the connected PSUs and some devices may not like it. Has a battery side and surge protection only side. Comes in around the $130~140 range depending on where you source it.

I've ran one myself. Quite reliable IMO. Though my servers grew to need something more so I picked up a bunch of CyberPower OR1500LCDRT2U 1500 VA 900 W rack mountable UPSs. They're over your budget but are considerably better. Have been very reliable the months I've been running them.

Not sure why the actual code didn't post. Copy the code below into Notepad and save as app_config.xml  in the numberfields project folder.

<app_config>
    <app>
        <name> GetDecics </name>
        <gpu_versions>
            <gpu_usage> 0.5 </gpu_usage>
            <cpu_usage> 1 </cpu_usage>
        </gpu_versions>
    </app>
</app_config>

So it looks like Rosetta's time estimates are Waaaaaaaaaay off.

I'm going to have to Abort about 1500 tasks as they would expire before completion.

I'll have about 600 completed for around 1.1 Million points though when the Marathon starts.

I'm not home at the moment to check but I have a similar feeling about how many I have completed.

Bunkering this year was kind of a disaster.

Thanks! The one that went dead was the APC XS1300 and I've got a backup-cyberpower that's standing in but I had a streak of cyberpower units going dead and wasn't sure if it was me or them. I've got a 2200VA for my server, but the server is under powered compared to my gaming/working/folding rig and I can't run a new line in the apartment I'm renting.

I have 20 or so that escaped my bunkering (even at 0.01kos ...) before I blocked per time of day too.

Thanks, so if a CUDA job takes 8mins and gets ~40 points that's 5 points per min. I don't have many submitted jobs either but I think CPU tasks are getting about 1 point per min, hopefully all my CPU time I put in to Numbers wasn't a complete waste lol.

Tried deployment on the WSL, appear to work for the CPU task, didn't get access to the GPU (and no time to go check if its possible :D)

Just tried it, it didn't work.

Try on the website with adblockers disabled, that's what the Pentathlon chat said to try anyway.

Yea you needed to run like a few days worth to get more correct times. Also it's probably better to change your project preferences on the site to target run time of 4 hours near the end of the event so we don't risk a lot of jobs not finishing and wasting the last 8 hours of the event.

All you'd have to do to check (assuming Debian) is run "lspci -vnn | grep vga" and see what adapter (if any) appear.

Part of the problem would be you haven't installed the GPU driver. BOINC needs it. Another issue is I wouldn't imagine WSL allows hardware access outside of the CPU.

Yeah, I just figured that out. The "Target CPU Run Time" option is 8 hours by default and It is well and truly buried in the Project Preferences here.

Some of my rigs did really well in picking up as much work as they would get done for the time allotted to bunker while some of my other rigs grabbed way more work than they were going to complete.

The software wasn't incredibly accurate.

I grabbed a ton of Rosetta but then mostly ended up running Numbers so I have heaps of extra jobs and probably a lot that are going to expire.

I'm going to submit whatever was completed, dump whatever didn't finish, then switch to running Rosetta native so I get that extra umph of output.
