BOINC Pentathlon 2020

Oh sheet, we have a problem. My log is telling me Rosetta moved from http to https. That slut what does she have to hide!?!

It wants me to re-add the project, but muh WU's...

NumberFields@home deadlines are much wider, maybe bunker those instead of Rosetta? Would probably be good to build up multiple VMs with competed work that we can drop at one of the throws we wish, might be more valuable than bunkering Marathon?

Javelin throw is best of 3 right? Having one big throw right off the bat could help immensely. Being one of the biggest players here I'm in if you are. I'll need to make an account though.

I was thinking of keeping some for later? I know we messed up big time last year with one too many short throws and wasted effort in doing so.

Like I might run the day before the event starts as Numbers, these 2 days as Rosetta since I have them anyway. Numbers deadline is the 9th for ones I got today so I know we can keep ones we get tomorrow and the next day for the second throw before the expire, maybe. Hmmmmmm

I would say bunker as many as we can until the deadline for the largest throw then go back to Rosetta.

Probably the most useful, extra 2-3 days of Marathon likely won't change our position at all.

I made an account and joined the team. I'm getting WU dated Fri, 8th @ 10-ish PM. So that's 7 days to expiration I believe. I'll start getting the VM's switched over and see what I can bunker.

Good thing is I have a giant queue of Rosetta so if I run out of Numbers I'll just resume those.

Strange. It looks like Numbers is completely ignoring individual CPU performance and is handing out WU's purely on a number of thread/days work of work basis. Every one of my 16vCPU VMs have identical amounts of work. This is across 4 different types of CPU. No idea what I'm looking at.

The same chaos is occurring in the Rosetta forums. Just let the queue empty, and then readd the project.

There's been a change in plans. Going to focus on NumberFields@Home for now. When it's over I'll address Rosetta.

OK,

Just finished rebuilding all my rigs and wiping the Windows partitions to get more disk for Linux.

Would have been done sooner but an Auth server thew a fit today and several hundred VPN users were blocked so I couldn't exactly ignore that. Disk was Full, Certificates Expired and the secondary server was already borked so the fail-over didn't exactly work as designed and to top it all off this little but important piece was missed in our maintenance so its licensing has expired and we have 3 weeks to get that sorted.

God I love being handed infrastructure with no training and no documentation.

So with about 90 threads what should I point it at? They're all on Rosetta for now so I can verify they are tweaked enough not to bork the GPUs that are Folding.

Bash: e31231v3; 6 threads; 3TB

Doc2: 2600; 9 threads; 355GB

Fold1: G5500; 4-threads; 50GB

Fold5: 2700; 13 threads; 450GB

Fold6: 2700; 9 threads; 200GB

Fold7: 3900x; 21 threads; 97GB

Fold8: 2700x; 13 threads; 87GB

Fold9: 9900k; 13 threads; 97GB

I don't know if I'll have time to manage bunkering, but I'm willing to give it a shot

The issue appears to be the linux client still has http:// as the project URL but they've converted over to HTTPS.

Im not certain but I suspect by stopping the client then editing /var/lib/boinc-client/account_boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta.xml and changing the master_url to https: you might be able to fix it without having to dump a bunch of WUs.

Nope - Tried it on a system without a lot of work cached and it changed it to https but nuked all the jobs in progress and wiped the cache when the client was re-started

So much for that. It doesn't matter since last minute I decided not to bunker Rosetta. Will switch back to just running it after the Javlin.

These people are idiots changing it over to SSL a couple of days before the Pentathlon starts.

Oh yeah, they say, just set all you jobs to finish then manually enter: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta as the project list on the BOINC client still has the old http:// URL.

Screw that

In Projects Tab select "Rosetta", Click "No New Tasks"; Click "Suspend"

Go to Tasks, Highlight All, select Abort

Back to Projects, select Rosetta; Click "Update"

Back to Tasks and Wait for all jobs to be aborted

Back to Projects; Select "Rosetta"; Click on "Remove" to remove the project

Go to Tools Menu and select "Add Project"

Manually enter https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta as the URL

Enter UID and Password to re-add project

At least this way they know you've dumped all the projects so they can be assigned back to others.

@Gorgon I believe I speak for everyone when I say we all know what's going on here. It's clear one of the big players is paying off Rosetta to update their protocol at this time for the sole purpose of ruining everyone's ability to bunker.

My money is on SETI.Germany. They're salty they only took 3nd place last year so they want to knock down the competition.

It's all a conspiracy! They were in cahoots with Planet 3DNow! the entire time! *wraps tinfoil around head*

I'm not going to worry about switching until the day of the event. Rosetta would have to be totally insane to block the old url in that short of a time period, insane.

I have 15,000+ jobs in my queues, I'm not dumping those.

If you read the log it even said do it at your own convenience. Like, no rush so if you can get them bunkered ready to submit you should be good for at least a week.

Until they change their mind and nuke it with 15 minutes notice due to the load on their servers ...

Problem is how slow they get handed out, luckily I only made the mistake on my home systems not work as well so the damage was only 3k jobs. But while I was changing Number over to http, no idea why or how mine were https but w/e, my work systems got blocked so they aren't getting any Numbers jobs. So dumb.

Work is running Rosetta for now and is still going to be able to pull down Numbers jobs, upload limit of 0.5KB/s so any Rosetta jobs that do complete in the next half day are so unlikely to upload it should be fine.
