Canon EOS R5 and R6 Product Announcement

Well, Canon's virtual product launch has happened, and there's been extensive coverage by various sites about the new EOS R5 and R6, so here's a quick recap:

There's also a couple of lens launches, the 100-500mm F4-7.1L IS USM, the RF 600mm and 800mm F11 IS STM, plus a pair of teleconverters, the RF 1.4X and 2X teleconverters.

 

In general, Canon's got a pair of very competitive cameras that are either on par, or superior their competitors. It's clear Canon has been listening to their customers, with the implementation of dual card slots for both models, plus the ditching of the touch bar interface, and the return of the joystick.

There is a presser attached to the article, which is currently scant on details right now. However, what we do know is that the camera has in-body image stabilization, a new CMOS sensor, 20fps continuous shooting in silent mode, 12fps continuous shooting with the mechanical shutter, and dual card slots. But the new show stopper is the claimed 8K video capabilities; DPReview has the belief right now that the 8K is actually a 2x oversampled 4K video. This also means that the sensor is likely in the 40+MP range in order to do 8K. No word on how Canon is managing the data rates and heat from 8K video capture.

 

Otherwise, the body looks like an evolution of the current EOS R platform; the tilt-flip rear LCD screen is there, but Canon has dropped the divisive multi-function touchbar for a more tradtional AF joystick.

 

Also being announced at the same time are 7 RF mount lenses, including a RF 100-500 F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, a RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM kit lens, and a pair of teleconverters. Samples of the R5, the 100-500mm, and two new RF Extenders (1.4X and 2X) are expected to be shown at the WPPI show in Las Vegas, and the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, both scheduled to take place later this month, so I would expect more details to become available then.

• 12fps using the mechanical shutter and the electronic shutter offering 20fps

• 5 stop IBIS that works in conjunction with lens bases IS
• Animal detect and tracking so you can steadily track your subject.
• 8K RAW internal video recording up to 29.97 fps
• 8K internal video recording up to 29.97 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265).
• 4K internal video recording up to 119.88 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). 4K external recording is also available up to 59.94 fps.
• No crop 8K and 4K video capture using the full-width of the sensor.*
• Dual Pixel CMOS AF available in all 8K and 4K recording modes.
• Canon Log available in 8K and 4K internal recording modes.

The R5 from what's being said about the rumours indicates that this will be an absolutely killer camera, with an interesting party trick in the 8K video capabilities. One of the rumours going around is that the R5 will also do 4K @ 120p:

So far, the rumours have proven to be mostly accurate... just need to see the price and the exact details.

It definitely looks really interesting so far. It took a while for Canon to really catch up but I do hope it's good enough to get some competition going. 

 

With all that said, still a lot of unanswered questions, so we'll have to wait for details.

If it is actual 8k video at reasonable frame rates, this might make me finally splurge for a real camera again instead of just the convenience of "good enough for most things" in the iPhone.

From what's being speculated, based upon the estimated readout rates of the the new 1D X Mark III, Canon seems to have a data readout rate of their new sensors at about 1.2Gbps on a per pixel basis, as the 1D X Mark III has RAW 5.5K 60p video output.

 

That means the R5 should be good for 8K 30p, assuming the R5 is using a fast card format; I don't think anything less than CFExpress would be appropriate here, considering the fps spec for stills.

Resolution should not be anywhere near your top concern for a video camera. It seems nice on paper but there's a lot more to a camera than resolution and high res shit composition is still shit composition

I think that's an overly simplistic way to look at it.  Resolution is at or near the top of your list of concerns based on what kind of output you're producing.  Delivering in 1080p?  Shooting in 4K gives you all sorts of fun re-framing options in post or very sharp 1080p output when the entire 4K is scaled down.  Delivering in 4K?  Well if you want the same options as before, you need a higher resolution video camera.  This is where 6K and 8K cameras really help.

 

IF Canon actually delivers a usable 8K/30 mirrorless that's affordable, it will change everything.  This is a big deal for video guys.  Specially since Canon's glass is basically second to no one's, other than the silly-expensive Zeiss stuff.

Yeah but if you really care about the resolution that much you are going to get a RED or like camera. Sure it's nice to see it on the mainstream but I doubt Cannon will bring new tech at this point. Sony and Panasonic already have cameras on the market with tech that outshines all of Cannons mirrorlesses. Imagine 8K/30 but with a shitty codec, or terrible color science, rolling shutter artifacts, with a terrible UI

Resolution matters, both in video and in still shots, for picking up details.  I expect any DSLR from Cannon/Nikon/etc to have decent color, though need small adjustments via RAW editing.  Which one is the best is often subjective, or based on what type of content you most often shoot (portraits, sports, landscapes, etc).  I love that you also just flat out said I've got shit composition so shouldn't care, when in fact I've got a photo and video and design background, though most of what I do is still camera work to show fine details of things, or nature photography.

Nah I was saying many people just look at resolution as the only selling point. Also I wasn’t saying you had shit composition I was saying if someone did a new camera won’t fix that

This seems like an absolute killer of a camera, and the more information that gets released, the more it seems like this is going to be a huge release for Canon.

This is the first camera in a while I am looking forward to seeing in the flesh. I got to play with a 1DXIII yesterday and was amazed by the AF, it is phenomenal. However for me, a wildlife tog the pixel density and weight make it not quite the body for wandering around with as is my style. While the R5 is not going to be the camera I will buy, I am hoping for either a 7D3 replacement or a crop version of the R%, I am quite looking forward to see how good the EVF is for fast moving subjects. I currently use optical viewfinders as nothing I have tried hits the mark, and that includes the Sony A92, R, Nikon Z etc. All suffer pixel response and refresh rates that make staring through the viewfinder for long periods while tracking fast subjects uncomfortable to say the least. I am hoping that Canon have upped their game with this one and everything I have heard suggests they have. If so it could be indicative of a future body that will be a worth successor to the 7D2. If the R5 is 45mp then in crop mode will be about 18mp, so not quite the pixel density of the 7D2 let alone the 90D. If canon mad a cropped version using their 32mp sensor in the future that would be quite a beast.

Yep.  It looks like the only "cripple" they did was using a single CFExpress and SD card.  Dual CFExpress card slots would have been better, if a bit more expensive for the end user.  The 6K C500 Mark II goes through a 512GB CFExpress card in about 31 minutes with its 2.1Gbits/sec RAW Lite.  I'll bet this one's limit will be closer to 15 minutes or so on the same card.

The iPhone performs well in a narrow range of circumstances using its wide (best quality) sensor. Compared to my Canon G7X mkII (sensor equivalent to Super 16mm), dynamic range in good lighting is better (due to the phone capturing 2 exposures per video frame), but it doesn’t appear benefit much from the 4K resolution. 1080P from my Canon is equal or better in regards to sharpness. Given the space savings of HEVC, it probably doesn't Cost much more for the iPhone to record 4K rather than 1080P though. 
 

Start straying out of the iPhone’s sweet spot, and video quality dives quite quickly. Recording a section of a play (for advertising purposes) from the back of the auditorium would’ve been impossible to do on even the iPhone’s telephoto sensor with any reasonable quality due to the challenging lighting and higher ISO necessitated. (Note: The lighting was designed for live audience instead of cameras.) Slower shutters due to low light also prevent the second exposure per frame from taking place, allowing the G7X to pull ahead in dynamic range. 
 

Not saying phone cameras are bad by any stretch. Software processing and absurdly fast capture speeds allow small sensors to punch well above their weight so long as shutter speeds are fast enough to facilitate it. Just a matter of using the right tool for the job.

We'll see how it works in practice, but so far so good.  Canon seems to have realized that holding back on features doesn't fly in an era when Sony is eating its lunch, and when smartphones can produce better video in some respects.

I think Canon knows as this camera has been in development for a while. The initial RF launch was more of a stopgap in terms of the bodies as it was all about the mount and the lenses.
