I've found it can also vary depending on the work unit.

That's with stock Asus utilities (GPU Boost II) in order to enable the factory overclock, with temperatures in the mid-80s on GPU0 with stock fan settings. Tonight's dry runs are on stock spec for now; after I see those results when I get back from work, I'll launch into more advanced settings or just fire up Afterburner and see what I can wring out.

 

Do you have any guidelines in regards to any of this?

Oh, that could probably have something to do with it. GPU Boost is highly temperature dependant. My card sits in the low 60's while folding at 2025MHz (current room temp 27°C). If your card is in the mid 80's then your clock speed will be considerably lower.

 

Set a custom fan profile to try and keep temperatures down. Stock fan profile might not be designed to handle a constant heavy load like Folding.
Does the GPU have a good supply of fresh air? Good airflow in the case? A way to exhaust the hot air from the case?

Airflow is great, the case is a gigantic Thermaltake unit and I've configured it based on suggestions from people here on the forums. Fan curves are something I'm still messing with, as I'm now noticing that the stock fan curve parks right at about 60% and stays there, with the thermal target at 84°C. I think Asus' intention was to be as quiet as possible during gaming, because at stock settings these cards are SILENT. After adjusting fan speeds up to 90%, I'm now sitting at 1936 on average.

 

After I get home from work tonight, I'll play with my case fan setup to introduce more GPU control. Right now, everything's hubbed on board headers apart from the CPU-relevant fans.

So for my test run at (mostly) stock settings, I pulled 313,201 points and 12 WU in about 8 hours. Lessons learned so far is that I really have to mess with my fan curves to enable more powerful GPU clocks, but it certainly seems possible to attain based on what Spotty told me.

I think my main system lost power or something, it hasn’t produced anything at all for 9 hours. I should be able to get it back up, but I don’t know for how long, especially with that hurricane.

I don't know if I'm folding properly. I only have one client going which is local. Was I supposed to set up another client specifically for the Linus tech tips team? I was able to add the team info in identity settings so I know I'm definitely on the team. I'm just not sure what to do with the client connection settings and ports. And my GPU keeps failing, probably because I'm using the laptop with a GTX 1070 MaxQ. is there a helpful YouTube tutorial video or something that explains how to set a client connection up and if it's necessary in terms of joining the event happening in October?

Yup, My best Pascal card (1707Ti) can run at 2025 for months without any failed WUs. Some of My 1060s get twitchy at 2012 so when running full power I tend to aim for 1980 or thereabouts as the harder you push them the power consumption goes up exponentially.

 

What I tend to do is profile a new card using FAHBench and a current "difficult" (14180?) WU and run 10 minute tests cranking up the shader clock at 100% fan to see where they fail (FAHBench so I'm not spitting failed WUs back and getting the slot disabled). Once I find the failure point I used to back down one step (13MHz for Pascal or 15MHz for Turing) but I've discovered that some cards will hit the occasional bad WU and fail after a few weeks so I just back off two steps and use that as my upper limit for clock speed.

 

Normally I run my cards at near stock (~90% of the FE TDP) with a slight increase in Fan Speed if they're running hot in a case. But during competitions efficiency gets thrown out the window in favor of performance.

do i need to install the drivers for both cards? (side note, how would i know if a GPU was running into problems because i theoretically only plugged in the 8 pin instead of both the 8 and 6 pin)

You may want to find a driver that the cards agree with, download it, then DDU your current one. Then, install the additional cards and reinstall the driver. When I put the 1660 into my system, it freaked out until I installed the drivers.

 

As for the GPU power situation... do you not have enough connectors? It may not boot at all if that's the case.

yes. unfortunately despite being a 700W PSU it only came with dual 6+2 pins... my major complaint about the TT Smart RGB. so far, the PC has booted, but i have not put it under any majore load

If that's the case, just lower the power limit of the card and you might be able to get away with it.

I need to order me some longer power cables so I can finally get my two heavy hitters going for the main rig.  Along with getting that loop setup.  Plus, need some fan cable extenders too (o the draw backs of the big TX10 case - at least I have space for days to shove stuff into it).  

 

But yeah, I'm glad this event is being hosted later in the year.  Even though temps will probably still be in the 80Fs range here.
