Everything was known or expected. The fact of the breach itself, its scale and apparent ease is of more note. Contractors remain the weak link in the chain for intelligence agencies worldwide


My Thoughts:

As stated in the quotes/excerpts, contractors continue to be a huge risk in cyber security. From things such as AD and Exchange access to file/network share access. Going after a contractor is usually a usable pivot point to go after your main target. It seems this specific contractor had a LOT of data and involvement. To put this hack in perspective, the Collection #1 password collection was only 87 GB. Granted that breach was only text, this breach is 1000x the size. Regardless, with Russia attempting to make it's own internet, it may be less prone to outside attacks soon enough.

You never seen Live Free or Die Hard? Thomas Gabriel transfers petabytes of data over WiFi from a moving truck in under 12 hours.

Some of the oldest systems running in banks, government agencies etc are so old that noone wants to touch or disable them because they're afraid they won't turn back on again and there's no company who can support, fix or maintain those systems anymore :P So as long as they work, noone touches them haha.

Yeah. Most of their systems are behind a firewall. Which can still be exploited. Server 2008 and R2 support will end next year.

I know a client that is still using an IBM 3084 and it hasn't been powered off since it was installed ~35 years ago.
