Yeah,probably with the help of AMD just trying to get some spotlight as last couple of weeks has been about NVIDIA new mid range cards.

Considering AMD cards do generally have more compute power than their Nvidia counterparts I'm surprised no company leveraged this sooner.

 

RT cores = extra cost. It can actually be redundant if maybe a company like Epic would bake real-time ray-tracing into their game engine that takes advantage of GPU compute capabilities.

Sounds a bit like they're adapting Epic's strategy -

How I plan my builds -

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Yeah they do,but dunno if it is enough to get ray traced game with playable frame rate.Nvidia use proprietary hardware and still those GPUs having hard time with ray tracing.

Still, I think if they'd focus on just GPU compute things will get better and cheaper.

Think about it, they're charging people for RT cores on their top cards even though only a handful of applications would take advantage of it.

 

I remember exclusives like PhysX and Hairworks but at least those are software which don't add costs on the card unlike RT cores.

CryTek is supposed to talk about this at GDC, so we'll see what sort of thing they did.

 

However my guess is it's a single-bounce ray trace, i.e., the first thing the ray hits after the reflection is what you get. And looking up discussions on the internet about this so far, it appears that it's not the same ray tracing as what NVIDIA is trying to push. Speculation is it's a combination of voxel-based global illumination methods and environment probes.

 

EDIT: If you're confused by the statement "not the same ray tracing", ray tracing is an umbrella term for various algorithms that if you boil it down, describe the same thing: shooting rays from the POV to find the color of a pixel.

 

To blow your mind a bit, Wolfenstein 3D is technically a ray traced game, because it uses an algorithm called ray casting that's in the family of "ray tracing" algorithms. What NVIDIA wanted to do was real-time path tracing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_tracing)

 

EDIT 2: It may not be a single bounce thing because at around 1:00, there's a puddle reflecting something that's being reflected by glass.

PhysX started as a dedicated physics card by a third party.  It was actually a decent technology, but virtually no one bought it, which is why they eventually got bought up by Nvidia.

People act what NVIDIA did was a world first. It might be the most ambitious ray tracing way but there are better ways that people won't notice any difference

I don't really get why people are saying that the RTX cards struggle with ray tracing. Sure, it reduces frame rates compared to not using it. That's a given. But comparatively to, hell I'll use older VeggieTales as an example (rendered at 640x480 at 29.97fps), the fact that we can do it at the quality we're at (1920x1080 at 30-50fps in something like Battlefield V? I'll be conservative with the estimates) is a feat in of itself.

But I know there's a lot of difference between an episode that would've been rendered in 1997 vs. a game that came out in 2018. Just giving a flawed example.

Actually I found a scene that requires at least two-bounces to work at around 0:55 (the window is showing a puddle, which is reflecting another part of the scene). Now things are getting interesting. I'll just have to hope someone releases CryTek's presentation for digestion.

Well I was referring to the PhysX middleware not the processor from Ageia.

 

Nvidia didn't change their hardware. In fact, some people got PhysX to run on AMD hardware via some type of driver hack. And it still isn't an additional cost in the card.

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

I have 32inch 144hz 1440p monitor. 1080p and 50 fps wont cut for me,and lets be honest most enthusiasts have at least 1080 144hz monitors,if not 2k.It is just better.So i would need to spend at least 1200$ on rtx 2080ti in order to use ray-tracing and keep frame-rate around what 90-100 fps?Anything over 10% performance loss is just unacceptable.

Welcome to the beauty of PC gaming, where you don't have to play with certain things. You don't have to use the RTX settings in Battlefield V or any game that supports them. But guess what? Being able to do path-tracing in real time is a hell of a feat. It's not unachievable, we're just in earlier stages of getting it to where it can ideally be.

As evidenced by the thread we're posting in.  I'd argue that the ability to do real time ray-tracing without dedicated hardware (such as the RTX cores) is an even more impressive feat.

 

You know, given that my R9 390 is a better compute card than my new RX 590, I wonder if it would do better with RTRT (real time ray-tracing).  That will be an interesting hypothesis to test.

I don't know what magic sauce CryTek is using, but if all the lighting, shadowing and reflections are done in real-time using ray tracing method on Vega 56 and is capable of being run on any hardware of similar level without any requirement for dedicated ray tracing hardware, this is probably the most orgasmic thing I've seen this year.

 

Crytek, if you guys can release this thing as executable demo any of us can try out, you'll convince us all without any doubt (with videos people can say and think many things especially after NVIDIA is convincing everyone how their dedicated thing is the only real deal and they want to sell it for 1000€ a piece). And Crytek would potentially get fuck ton of game developers on their side because this shit is insane. Just imagine people being able to experience ray tracing on all the graphic cards we already have today. And at this framerate. It's insane. If pixel shaders were a revolution, this is another one if CryTek can really pull it of and it's a real thing. Oh man, this is super exciting stuff.

Sure if this was the first examples we had of this. it isn't. We've had confirmation that BFV uses neither the RT nor Tensor Cores of RTX GPU's, there's no reason other than DICE and NVIDIA being annoying (likly for PR reasons), that it couldnt; be run on a 10 series or even AMD GPU. Thats Why Metro Exodus runs so much better than BFV with ray tracing on, it is using the dedicated hardware.

I strongly challenge that assumption. I'd wager that most enthusiast gamers are running low end 1080p 60Hz monitors.

"2K" I suspect you mean 1440p. That's not 2K. 2K is a catch-all term for resolutions roughly 2000 pixels wide (Eg: FHD 1080p is technically a form of 2K. The "Main" 2K standard is the DCI Cinema specification, which is 2048 x 1080 - or the flat cropped DCI spec, which is 1998 x 1080).

 

I know some manufactures use the term 2K for 1440p, etc, but that's just plain wrong. It would be 2.5K, if we're going to use that terminology.

When I pause the video at various points when the mirrors are moving and when the drone is moving around another one, it looks more like ghosting. Or at least some sort of smearing. Either way, it doesn't look like a smooth transition of movement.
