Well they do give us a better choice...by making nvidia and intel make something better :( (r5 1600 and 1700 are good tho)

The gpu will be at tsmc GLOBALFOUNDRIES in Taiwan New York!  Time to camp 2 weeks in advance on the tarmac, before boarding the plane.

Oh, I know it was a joke, but I'm actually contemplating it specifically because my R9 390 still does what I need it to.  When I built my Ryzen system, I originally wanted to build a completely new system, including the video card, but Vega wasn't out yet.  Considering it's been 4-5 months now, the urge to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading has begun to wane (it doesn't help that I've had to spend close to $1,000 repairing my truck, so far this year).

Nvidia already announced their new tensor cores for Volta (probably enterprise only) so it's only natural that AMD is looking in a similar direction as AI is currently one of the fastest expanding tech fields.

I know that feeling, upgrading for the sake of upgrading, it's a slippery slope :D

Vega is a transition uArch. It's still, mostly, GCN, but it's coming with a new driver architecture and massive Computer Performance. Raja mentioned at one of the events that AMD wasn't even on the map in compute, which is the purpose of Vega. Without massive changes to the entire design philosophy of GCN, it would appear they're stuck in a few ways... unless they can drop the power per GPU down to, say, 100w and put two on there. Rather than running a single GPU at ~250w with 64 CU, they want to run two 64 CU GPUs at 100w each. (Though their real goal is 4x GPU for Workstation cards.)

Lol. I really can't hand it to AMD on this one as the P100 GPU and upcoming ones from Nvidia all have Tensor cores which is used for AI. Except Nvidia isn't spewing it everywhere.

It's the V100 that has it not P100, also it's unlikely that any other Nvidia dies will have Tensor cores in them only the top end one that goes in Tesla GPUs. The Tesla cards are specifically for servers and compute/AI where the other line of cards like Quadro are for more standard acceleration and workstation uses. I don't expect V102, V104 and V106 to have any Tensor cores in them at all.

 

Where as AMD will have the equivalent what ever it ends up being in all their GPU dies, all be it not at the same top end performance as the V100 Tensor performance.

I think his point was that it was still doing it for him :P so in his case.. he should wait, since he won't leverage the extra gpu power because of his monitor anyway.

Just like my fury is enough for my 144hz/1440p monitor for many games I still have 6 months to finish, which makes waiting the better option, as whatever will come out then will be cheaper for the level of performance not yet needed today!

interesting, I was hoping they would come up with something to combat "Tensor" cores at least for the sake of marketing,

but I still don't like the direction GPUs are moving... the seem to favor one specific workflow like an ASIC would, instead of focusing on graphics and general purpose compute

Profit Margin. Minus the HBM2 stacks, AMD is going to sell Vega from $399 USD to >$5000 USD this year. Cut-down version to replace Polaris next year. Nvidia's revenue actually isn't up a massive amount, but the profit margin is massively improved because of the HPC realm.  Thus, AMD is setting themselves to be able to scale up & down by stacking GPUs on PCB, rather than redesigning all of their GPUs. Nvidia has 4(?) separate Pascal designs now.

yeah and across two manufacturing processes at the same time - 16nm at TSMC and 14nm at Samsung, they just don't know what to do with all the muney I guess

Vega 64 is going to slot between the 1080 & 1080 Ti in most scenarios. The Vega 56 is the really interesting one, as I think it's going to be a lot closer to the Vega 64 than we expect. But that's also why it's going to draw so much heat: it has to run higher voltage to run higher clocks than AMD would have wanted to out of the design. AMD is still running an iGPU design and scaling it up, to the point that a 1/8th Vega 64 is going to be on-die in Raven Ridge. Which looks like it's going to be a really amazing performer in the ~100 USD range. (It's a 1 CCX Zen design + 8/10/11 CU Vega as an APU.)

 

There's also one little issue that is going to crop up: Ryzen + Vega in DX12. Something about Nvidia + Ryzen in DX12 just doesn't work well. There's games that we could see Vega 64 beat the 1080 Ti because of that issue. We'll have to wait for extensive benchmarking on Ryzen.

Pay a lot of it for Semi-custom Nodes. That's a way to burn ~250 Million USD or more.

Windows Aero theme needs at least 10 cores and a Titan Xpp so it makes sense that basic games would require this type of setup
