Quote

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) plunged on Tuesday following a first-quarter report that failed to justify the stock's 300% gain last year. AMD matched analyst expectations, but its guidance for the second quarter left a lot to be desired, despite a flurry of new product launches. AMD stock was down 19% at 11:40 a.m. EDT.

TLDR: Their profit margins aren't good enough, revenue growth isn't being forecast high enough for Q2, and their stock price run-up was basically setting expectations that were impossible to meet.

They also lost $73 million dollars on ~ $1B in revenue.  Classic AMD financial performance.  In comparison, Intel had ~$15B in revenue.

It was only a month for Ryzen tho, and only Ryzen 7 at that. Not too surprised, plus it's noticeably better than Q1 2016

Gonna see if it drops more in the next day or two.

Was gonna buy in at like $2 last year, but got laid off and could no longer justify spending $500-1000.  Still kicking myself.

You start up a brokerage account, Scottrade, Firstrade, pretty much every financial institution, etc etc, deposit funds, and away you go.

The expression "don't try to catch a falling knife" is relevant here.  When a stock drops this much this fast it's going to continue to have downward momentum for at least a few days.  A 5% drop is considered a shit load for a single day.  20+% you rarely see outside of stocks that cost < $1.

Watching Biotech/Pharma stocks tank during Trump's first press conference where it spent 10 minutes bashing pharma companies was certainly interesting.

AMD just couldn't convince the consumers that their products were enticing enough for their stock to stay high.

Sad, but it's unfortunately true.

They also can't survive a price war with Intel or Nvidia, so even if they gain marketshare the prediction is that they'll still get squashed shortly thereafter and continue burning cash.  Intel literally has *double* AMD's profit margin to play with.

Did you read the links?  AMD actually did about as well as expected and this doesn't really include the r5 sales.

Today I learned, lacklustre = meeting quarterly expectations and growing 18% from last year.

This is a great week to buy more, especially since Ryzen R7 was only being sold for a month in Q1.

Q2 earnings report will be the one to really keep an eye on.

their revenue increased by 18% compared to last year, who ever thinks AMD's Q1 results are idiots, most of the money from Ryzen isn't in yet, because AMD doesn't get paid at front, it's not a supermarket, beside they have full segments that are not covered yet by any products, and tons of new products coming, Naple, R3, Vega, APU, mobile, OEMs....

and the stock drop is expected nervous ppl tend to dump before results when they dont like risk or cannot afford risk, and it will go back up pretty fast.

Exactly.  This is likely why they pushed up the launch of Ryzen (I say that, because a lot of companies seemed to be caught off guard and weren't fully prepared), because they knew their stock prices would take a hit for Q1; and so they made an aggressive move to hopefully ensure a better showing for Q2.  If I had any extra money right now, I'd definitely look into investing.  Maybe next paycheck, as I should have a fair bit left over after bills (and yes, I know stocks are better as a long term investment, which I'm fully prepared for).

Actually Q4 and Q1 next year will be the really telling ones.. Q4 is holiday buying season and their full line of Ryzen products will be out along with Vega. Then in Q1 18 you have tax return season... lots of people flush with cash looking to buy toys.

Issue with that is Q2 won't include either of those. They'll be launching end of Q2, which means little to no sales from them.

It'll be Q3 and Q4 before we'll know how Naples, R3, and Vega sales do.

That's if AMD actually gets Vega out in sale during early Q3, there could be some delays; especially if AMD doesn't allow AIB versions on launch.

Polaris didn't really see it's success until several months after it was launched; as AIB versions took so long to appear; and even Reference designs had stock shortages.

The hype is just going down, this is basically what I expected and I think we might still see them drop a bit more.

At least their CPUs seem to sell very well, at least here in Denmark...
