Will it be worth upgrading from a 2080 Ti to a 3080?

I know that benchmarks and stuff aren’t out yet but based on the information released so far will it be worth upgrading my 2080 Ti to a 3080? I know it has ALOT more vram.

it doesnt, in fact it has less than a 2080 Ti. as for your original question, it depends, if the 2080ti is enough for your needs then you dont really need to upgrade.

The 2080TI actually has 1GB more VRAM than the 3080.

 

As for performance difference, it's supposed to outperform the 2080TI by quite a bit, and you could subsidize the purchase of it by selling your 2080TI, and it'd probably be worth it to you.

Oh ok I coulda sworn it said 24GB of GDDR6X but maybe that was the 3090. I was considering the 3090 but I read that’s more of a Titan level card and I don’t get those ones. Before my 2080 Ti I had a 1070 Ti and before that a 760 but if the 3080 isn’t at least 50% more FPS in games like AC: Valhalla and Cyber Punk 2077 I don’t know if it’s worth the money.

 

As for selling my 2080 Ti I think prices will drop so low it won’t be worth it and that maybe instead saving it as a backup for for a second rig might be smarter?

Trust me, you will know when it's time to upgrade. Your games will run like crap, your PC will crash, or windows will keep BSODing. Upgrading at any other time just for "the sake of it" is a poor use of your money. For reference, I am typing this on a Lenovo thinkstation D30. A 9-year old computer I found form a recycling center for $25. I understand where you’re coming from but I upgrade regularly even when my PC isn’t crashing or breaking because I want a cinematic and immersive gaming experience.

 

My monitor is 1440p / 144hz so I tend to aim for that 120-150 FPS at high/ultra settings which most older cards just can’t pull off.

 

For example I had a 1070 Ti before I got my 2080 Ti and my FPS in RE:2 was like 48-50 and very noticeable from the 2080 Ti’s 150 FPS.

The 3070 is supposedly equivalent to a 2080Ti, and the 3080 is 20-30% better than a 3070. Logically, then, you can expect to see about 20-30% improvement by upgrading. Whether that's worth $700 to you is a question only you can answer.

Like you I am a 2080 ti user. 

Since I use an OLED TV as a monitor I want to do 4k 120hz. If I get a 3080 and it does not work out I will end up getting a 3090 anyway. So just getting a 3090 makes sense to me.

 

I already paid $1500 for the 2080 ti FTW3 Ultras so the price is not a big deal either. I am now used to it.

I am hoping that they do release a 3080 ti at some point so I don't have to pay $1500 plus for the card I buy after the 3090.

I would say likely not worth it for the 3080....

 

But we will see what it really does once the reviews come out and they are tested...

 

I do have my doubts however that the 3080 will be noticeably faster than the 2080Ti without Ray-Tracing and DLSS enabled.

 

The 3090 might be the worthwhile option..

 

I will be paying close attention to how the cards are tested, VERY CLOSE ATTENTION...

 

And the scores in the various tests etc for the 2080Ti's to see if those are actually real or not or just made up or performance cut drastically to make the new cards look better than they really are. Would be very easy for the reviewers to mess with the results..... I remember what some tried to do with the VEGA cards until they were called out on it.....

I will be focusing more on heat because that was my major issue with 2080 ti.

The first one I bought was an EVGA XC. I got it because my EVGA 1080 ti SC2s ran out of clocks before they ran out of cooling solution. The XC was the opposite. I replace the XC with another FTW3 Ultra and gave the XC to my Son(he does not overclock).

 

If the Nvidia card can stay cool I will get it. On the EVGA forums they are already throwing around $1750 for the FTW3 version. I will want a lot more cooling and mhz for that kind of money.

Currently i think its not worth, we havent seen real test performance and a rtx 2080ti is still a beast. The only time i think it will be worth upgrading is when developers start using the feature of decompressing files directly using the gpu then id probably consider upgrading. I'll probably personally wait until intel gets pcie gen 4 and probably check if ddr5 ram is anywhere near public launch before upgrading. this way ill upgrade motherboard and all the stuff that needs renewing to the new standards and my aio would need replacement by then

Worth is such a dumb metric. How many FPS gain is worth $700? If the system makes money, then its a bit easier to answer this question. But since I assume this is a gaming machine, how can any expenditure be "worth it".

I don't play on PC because I enjoy troubleshooting (even though my post history might imply that ) I play on PC for mods, stable frames and shiny textures, if I can't have any of that I might just go back to shoe box gaming (aka consoles)

 

To each their own and all that but what you've described isn't how the majority of PC gamers approaches this I'd wager.

But you see, this is all completely dependent on the arbitrary requirement of the OP, and so there is absolutely no point in asking the community for whether something is "worth it" or not.

 

Let's say that being able to play games is an absolute requirement, you will die if you cannot play games.

 

Then lets say that for a game to be considered "playable" it must be 60 fps on average, otherwise you are not playing the game, and therefore will die.

 

And also, for a game to be considered "playable" it must be on the maximum possible setting, otherwise you are not playing the game, and therefore will die.

 

And also, since you play on a 1440p monitor, you must play at 1440p, otherwise you are not playing the game, and therefore will die.

 

And the newest game you need to play (emphasis on need) is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, and so currently on a 2080 Ti, you cannot get 60 FPS at 1440p on max settings. And so you will die.

 

In this case, it is very clear that $700 would be "worth it" since you will literally die if you don't take a chance and upgrade the 2080 Ti, and maybe you will have a chance at surviving. But see you had to restriction many parameters (must be able to play games AND above 60 FPS AND 1440p AND max settings AND a demanding game), otherwise you could just compromise on any one of the above and pass the criteria to not die, and therefore question the "worth it"-ness . However if you were playing at 4k, you might still be dead even after upgrading, so is it "worth it" to upgrade if you were dead regardless of the 2080Ti/3080?

 

Of course in reality you don't die if you don't play at 60 FPS, and the reality is alot of games do maintain above 60 FPS on a 2080 Ti anyway. If $700 was an amount of money that you can spend without batting an eyelid, sure, maybe its "worth it". If $700 was the difference between being able to feed your family that month or not, then it clearly isn't worth it.
