Ripping a new one - Zephyrus

Update: Threadripper 1920X Build Version Air - Zephyrus

 

We decided to downgrade a few parts to make use of the spare things that were lying around. I was also keen to stop using my own H100i v2 for a more fool-proof air cooler.

 

Final Parts:

Case: Corsair Air 740

CPU: Threadripper 1920X

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB x ?

GPU: MSI GTX 980Ti

Motherboard: Asrock Fatal1ty X399 Professional Gaming

Fans: Various Corsair Stock fans

PSU: Corsair AX1500i

Storage: Samsung 960 EVO x 2

So...we did a thing. Making full use of a threadripper 1950X's PCIe lanes.

RAM: Mish mash of Corsair LPX & Kingston stuff, need to order higher capacity for our application

Cooler: Corsair H100i v2 (for now..)

how about 4 gamers 1 CPU threadripper edition - every player would get like 4c/8t and a GTX 1080ti on a full 16x connection ... if done right, this system should be able to kick ass and chew bubblegum x4

It's x16 + x8 + x16 +x8.  Plus the three x4 NVMe drives and he's hit the full 60.

It's 60 lanes to the CPU + 4 to the chipset and yes, x8 is still plenty.

Structural biology, we calculate high-resolution structures of proteins using GPUs =). If you meant maximum likelihood by ML, that would be spot on.

One thing that really annoyed me about the zenith motherboard is that I haven't yet found a way to turn off the red LED on the dimm.2 card. It sticks out like a sore thumb.

I had to look up this meme (feel old...). I really thought we would get away with 64 GB of RAM, but turns out we were swapping like crazy (although interestingly the NVMe drives seemed to make the swapping experience not as bad as I remember) so I quickly dug up some more. For this particular build, we may need to fill up and go for the 128 GB configuration.

So sorry for the diarrhea update, but we basically swapped out almost all the components (only the PSU, RAM. and case remained the same). We are planning for something bigger, more exciting for the original components. I took some nicer photos so you may enjoy them.

 

We swapped out the motherboard for this build with the Asrock Fatal1ty board for its native 10 gigabit eithernet support without comprimising on a quad dual-slot GPU configuration. They are a bit hard to come by but have an excellent feel to it.

We also decided to test out the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X for its very sweet price, so that has also been swapped out. The RAM has stayed the same, as a 8 x 16 GB layout of Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM, although we are currently struggling to get all the RAM to cooperate with the system.

I personally wanted to move away from the AIO that was in the previous build, so we got our hands on a Noctua U14S Threadripper edition that is seems to out compete the H100i v2.

Hey I'm thinking of building something pretty similar for machine learning / graphics rendering but hearing lots of overheating issues with quad 1080ti's or titan XP's have you had similar issues?

 

How did the PCIe lane consumption end up on the fatal1ty board? 

 

I was thinking of doing four of these hydro corsair cards to try and get around the thermal issue

Our cards definitely get hot, with the rear-exhaust style cards during our calculations get to a point at which they return to their respective base clock frequencies. PCIe lane situation is fine, although admittedly for our use case it appears that 16x and 8x are both "okay", its more of a future-proofing for anticipated improvements in the algorithms.

 

We have not experienced any intermittent shut downs so would conclude the 1500W is sufficient. On a related watercooled quad-1080Ti build the 1600W PSU is also being fine even with some mild overclock on the GPU.

 

I think a quad AIO will be fine, but I would make sure your case is compatible with such a setup (I have never tried 4 AIOs). Also I would mention that the zenith extreme board (and the fatal1ty board, all X399) seems to be very picky about getting 128 GB of memory to work. So if possible get something thats on the QVL, otherwise know that you're taking a risk. Generally I think GSkill kits have had better luck than others.

Zenith Extreme Pros:

Accessible dimm.2 slot for the 2 M.2 drives compared to them being under the graphics cards

 

2-pin temperature headers for watercooling

 

Better power delivery? and slightly better RAM comparability in my hands

 

Asrock Pros 

Native 10 gigabit link without the need for additional card

 

Better clearance for the 1st PCIe slot

 

Not E Atx.

 

I actually like the Asrock board more, only would have uses the zenith board if watercooling. Also if 10 gigabits connection is not important other boards are also good choices. For x399 I think the motherboard choice is fairly irrelevant.
