What allows them to scrape that data in the first place? Photos you upload to social media are for use on that social media, not by 3rd parties.

The social media sell the photos to other companies to use for whatever. Typically you give the social media ownership of anything you upload, though this may not actually be legal in many countries.

The trick is to copyright your face and sue any company that does facial recognition when done on you. Since governments care more about copyright infringement then privacy or any other crime.

I also think we are being too paranoid about the tech. Yes it can be used for evil, but it can be used for good, and it's exactly the same merit as free speech or right to bear arms. There will not be a yes/no agreement, only certain degrees of acceptable use.

Maybe you didn't upload one, but people are dumb and upload photos of you without your approval. That's the main problem. Coz people don't think that far that just maybe, some of us don't want our photos online.

I don't understand the issue here. All it does is it use AI to link picture together (aka xref table). For ages the same thing has been done with social media post, comments, web search. You can create the same links with the text only. What does doing it with an image now make it so different. You can already script something using the name to a person and go through his contact, find comments, post mentioning the name and related acronym. For god sakes i used to have developed such a tools where i worked a couple years back to do company background checks faster i was even finding the person xfire (yeah it was a long time ago) and steam account just from their name or myspace account.

The comment about the government not having anything like that is a lie and they have had this for years. Also it's not finding private pictures so you can technically do this by hand without AI. It's not illegal and if you are concerned than maybe think twice about posting things publicly

I think they give too little credit to the US government. They must be talking about the FBIs database. I’d imagine that the NSA has piles of data above all else.

Apparently, when the news reporter went to a study center (University?) testing this stuff, they asked "hey, can you check my photo/face against the database?", a few minutes later, the company that made Clearview, phoned the study center and asked "are you speaking to the media?!"

 

So, this software appears to phone home, give lots of details(!!!), and knows the difference between police using it, and other corporations/educational services (or on a user by user basis)!

I said George Orwell was a fictional book written to a common and popular theme at the start of the cold war.   I even linked to actual real world evidence to support all my postulations and articulated what I meant.   People need to learn how to think beyond the superficial in these topics.   It would go a long way if people could learn to dig deeper than to just to the level that satisfies their preconceptions.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Have you ever walked through a public place where other people were taking pictures? 

 

Phones cameras are high quality enough at this point that I'd assume even a someone walking through the background of a photo would be enough for an AI to index off of. I know that I've spent time walking through public parks where I've seen teenagers taking photos of each other and I wouldn't be surprised if I showed up in one of them. Kids love taking photos for whatever reason.

Face book have profiles for people who aren't on facebook,  When friends have uploaded a photo of you with them and said under thier photo "Enjoying a day at XX with Arika".  The computer already knows the up loaders face therefor the other person is significantly more likely to be someone called Arika.   In order to avoid having this profile you would have to guarantee no body has ever put a photo of you on facebook (from school or on instagram, or any other medium), and if they have that there is insufficient comments on that photo to determine who the people are.   Even when there is no name, they still can take that photo and assigne the name John Doe27384 and maintain that profile until enough data is scrapped to identify and rename John Doe27384 to Arika - Sydnry Australia.

There was a story a year or so ago from NYT about how all those "anonymous" analytics that MS, Google, Amazon, etc collect can be tied together and used to track and identify you, even if no individual piece of data has identifying information. All they need is enough data points and they can track where you live and work, where you shop and what you buy, what you like to do and what times you like to do that. 

 

You tie facial recognition into that and unleash it on every public photo on Facebook or Instagram and suddenly you can get a whole flood of new data points to track you by.
