LTT Official Folding Month 2019!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Alright guys, the time for locking this thread has come, can you all please use the Folding Community Board for all further talk.

Thank you all again for participating in the event.

Once the sheet is cleaned up I will edit this post to add the link to the spreadsheet.

@TVwazhere Can you please lock this thread for me.

YEP, in fact it doesn't use VRAM all that much, its best to down-clock your ram to stock settings to maintain stability.

I often get these '0' - I assume that means no WU's were completed in the 3H timespan between checks? Cause if it does something is going wrong as the one of 6 am I completed a WU about 14 minutes before they new cycle started and it still reports 0.

Question to you guys I have a feeling my GPU is underperforming ( based on that ave PPD list on google docs) Im around 1M ave with a single 2070, in the sheet it says, should be around 1.3M.

I did adjust powerlimit from 114% to 108% and core voltage +50% from +100% --> would this result in slower folding?

I've decided to just buy a case, got a Aerocool Tor Pro RGB. will be able to fit all 4 cards in there that way without taking the dremel to the case. Wish it didnt have tempered glass panel though :(

As near as I can figure out here’s what goes on behind the scenes ...

Your FAHclient connects to the Assignment Servers (AS) at Washington University at St. Louis (WUSL). The AS assigns you to a Work Server (WS) which sends you a Work Unit (WU) and a Collection Server (CS) to receive the result. The client completes the job and sends the result to the CS. The CS verifies the job and notifies the Client and Stats Servers (SS) of the points received.

Once an hour, around 45 minutes before the hour, the Stats Servers compile a list of total points and WUs per Client and per Team and make the list available on the hour.

EoC and other stats collection sites read the updated stats sometime shortly after the start of the hour. EoC appears to start attempting to read the updated stats on the hour.

So, the stats are compiled starting around 15 minutes before the start of the hour and those stats also have to be transferred from the CS to the SS before a quarter to the hour so the latest you can submit a WU and possibly see it in the next update is a quarter to the hour but typically this is 20 to 30 minutes before the hour.

The 2070 stats on the PPD Database are from results I submitted there last year. They are with a +105 Shader overclock, maximum power limit on an EVGA RTX 2070 XC Gaming under Linux with the stock Voltage-Frequency curve and fans at 70-80%. Or, in other words, flat out, full-tilt with the GPU running at 2055MHz.

I see, on a seven day average, around 1.3MPPD. Linux will typically give a 5-10% boost because of less PCIe utilization and a different driver architecture than Windows. That should translate to an average of 162.5kPPD with EoCs sampling cycle of three hours.

A less aggressive power limit may reduce the PPD as may reducing fan speed or the voltage-frequency curve

@Gorgon

Thank you for the elaborate answer. Makes a lot of things clear.

I just thought it's per 3 hours because that is what EoC shows.

Fans are running on auto and actually always hover around 55% fan speed on both with 66-67C - tried manual curve but temps stay similar but noise goes up :P

I have a +150 / +500 OC running on my armour, although it seems my vram GHZ is only runnign 7300MHZ nowadays. F@H is now showing 1.5M PPD, but not sure how accurate the software reports while folding.

Might go back to 114% powerlimit, although I've noticed that I dont get Bad WU's returned as much anymore, or havent at all this week I believe since tweaking Afterburner

The point at which an overclock becomes unstable for FaH seems to depend on the GPU Shader Clock frequency and will vary in similar models of cards based on the Silicon Lottery. By running at a lower power limit your limiting how high the GPU can clock up so it is similar to lowering the Shader Clock offset.

Under Linux we don’t have the same controls as Windows does in Afterburner, Precision Pro etc. or they’re not as easy to access.

Yeah with a GPU :D My quick google search told me that you mostly can't fold with GPUs on macs... Though I have no clue what kind of a difference the Radeon Pro 560X would make.

I have a 2018 Macbook pro 15 (middle tier) with a 560X, and i tried some gpu folding in bootcamp windows, and i think it made a bit above 100k PPD. This is some time ago, but i think i remember correctly. But i would not fold on a laptop, due to overheating issues, and risk of burnout.

It’s not quite as fully featured, but for nvidia cards GreenWithEnvy (GWE) has been a decent afterburner replacement for me. Assuming coolbits are set correctly you can adjust the power limit, chage core and memory clocks, create overclocking profiles, and acreate custom fan curves.

It's a pretty tight fit tho.. guess no real overclocking untill they get water.

Nice, I saw up to 47K PPD with CPU only but I shut it down after the WU completed. The Macbook is not mine and like you said no chance I'd do it for a longer time. I just wanted to see what kind of numbers I can get. It's still one hell of a computer though. It's good application I have used it, to my understanding it currently doesn't support multiple GPUs.

Hey, Seen this on a YT vid the other day so though id put my 3 DL380s to good use. Any recommendations for optimising folding for a VM?

Setup is:

3x DL380 G7 with 2x Xeon E5640 (i know there old!)

VMWare 6.7 u2

3x VMs (one on each host) with 8vCPUs (2Socets x 4Cores) (WinServer2019)

I have installed the folding software on each and put my identity on each. Seems to be working ok. But only seeing like 56k PPD. I see others with 600k+!

Is it purely down to CPU vrs GPU performance or have i missed something very simple?

GPU performance vastly out scales most CPU performance, but if you only just entered in your passkey recently, give it 24 hours to take effect to get the bonus PPD.

every time i download a WU from 155.247.166.220 it's either slow, aborted multiple times or it just starts and then never progresses after a certain point, but it doesn't fail the download so it just sits there

visiting that IP address in browser takes you to a generic splash page but even the little FAH logo has taken up to 20 seconds to fully display before. there's something seriously fucked with that server. i can't leave my machines folding anymore because whenever they come across a 14180WU now the client just locks up on the download

i wish we could specify a timeout/avoidance period, say, if download fails x times, or x minutes have passed without a completed download, then avoid work server x for 24 hours. that would really help with this because while it's going on i'm not really able to make any contibution to the project at all

I've been checking over the last few weeks on the official Folding@Home Support site and haven't seen anyone else reporting these kind of issues but now I'm seeing reports.

Specifically: Really slow WU downloads; failed download

and Multiple WU's Fail to Upload

I'm starting another thread and ask that if you experience issues uploading or downloading WUs you post your logs there and some information about your hardware and any steps you've taken to troubleshoot.
