Say hello to the Google Stadia controller, which includes a "play now" button. But you can use your own controllers, as well, if you want.

Today at GDC, Google announced its new video game streaming service. The new service will be called Stadia. This builds on the information earlier this year that AMD was powering Project Stream (as was then called) with Radeon Pro GPUs, and Google is a primary partner using AMD’s next generation CPUs and GPUs.

Stadia is being advertised as the central community for gamers, creators, and developers. The idea is that people can play a wide array of games regardless of the hardware at hand. Back in October, Google debuted the technology showcasing a top-end AAA gaming title running at 60 FPS. Google wants a single place where gamers and YouTube creators can get together – no current gaming platform, according to Google, does this.

Ultimately Google wants to stream straight to the Google browser. Google worked with leading publishers and developers to help build the system infrastructure. Google is one of a few companies with enough content delivery networks around the world to ensure that frame rates are kept high with super low latency.

I think Google can really make Cloud Gaming to work great, and I love that they use AMD powered Servers (CPU+GPU)

 

The controller connects by WIFI and goes direct to the server, not the device.

It can be played on a phone, Chrome, PC, Chromecast, ect

 

It uses Linux and Vulcan.

 

Stadia will launch this year.

Cool except LTE is usually 35Mb/s or less all across America, 16% of people in the US don't have access to internet, and the average speed is 10Mb/s or less.

Oh good, another thing for Google to:

  • completely fail to make work on Firefox "by accident" by using undocumented Chrome features.
  • take people's money for games they can't even download or play without an internet connection.
  • destroy people's bandwidth caps in seconds by streaming the things.
  • inevitably shutter in a few years because of a lack of growth, regardless of the actual usage numbers.

I think I'll stick to Steam and GOG.

Idk how I feel about the power of GPUs being advertised, but the CPUs being stuck at 2.7 GHz

Looks like this might scale better with resolution than framerate. Which personally, I don't prefer.

Really looking forward to this. I have a shit PC, so being able to stream games that I would otherwise be completely unable to play would be great until I can actually afford to build a decent gaming PC.

 

I put 100 hours in AC:Odyssey via Google's Project Stream, the beta to this service, and it worked great - I only had issues maybe 2-3 times total across all 100 hours of playtime, input lag was unnoticeable, and framerates were a consistent 30 at 1080p with ~25mbps (I've heard it goes to 60fps at higher internet speeds, but I can't confirm that), although there were some artifacting at times when my internet decided to shit the bed. The compression looks a bit like YouTube's, so if you're using an inconsistent internet connection, it would likely feel like you're playing a YouTube video - but when my internet decided to stay consistent, it looked wonderful and I didn't notice any artifacting at all.

 

Overall, I think this service will be a great alternative for those that can't afford a decent gaming rig/console - though of course pricing will be the deciding factor here on whether this might become the Netflix of gaming or become a complete bust. After all, if it's too expensive, it would just make more sense to save up to buy your own hardware/games.

I'm trying to guess what the hardware is. The GPU sounds like a Vega 56, or future 7nm derivative. The CPU is proving harder... 9.5MB of L2+L3 cache. The CPU I suspect might be a high core count part virtualised into several systems, with some cores reserved for the hypervisor. Articles say you get your own GPU, but I don't see the same said about CPU. So this could be Google's version of the X gamers 1 CPU system.

Google is making it sound like this is going to replace everything and is going to be the future, but they are forgetting that in the US where this is launching there are a large number of people without the internet speeds required to even watch a Youtube video in 480p, let alone stream a game in 1080p60 or higher.

 

People like having the physical hardware in their home, like PC gamers... especially PC gamers. Have you seen how obsessive we can get over our hardware?

 

This is useless for something like VR because the latency would be too high.

 

They never mentioned the price, I'm wondering if they are going to offer it "for free" and just sell all of your data instead.

I think the CPU is a Rome CPU, a 64c could feed 8 VMs with 1 GPU each, and give 8c16t per VM.

laws of physics is real, even on my home wired network, game streaming from my rig to my TV and I can tell the latency is there.  Can only imagine how much worse it would be by making the distance go from a few feet to multiple miles away.  Games just play better natively and yet another game streaming service I'll pass on.

It isn't just me, I recall various reviews about Steam Link and Shield with their version of game streaming and in each one the reviewer talked about the latency is there.  Ryan Shrout even said this "Once you get used to the latency..."  in one of his reviews.   I just see it as something to play Uno on, or a puzzle game, not anything with a lot of action on it.

 

or maybe i'm more sensitive to the latency than others(some might even say too sensitive).   Not knocking the tech for those that want to enjoy it, hope those that buy into it have a good time.  It's just not something I would do unless I really have to have my gaming fix and I've got no other choice.

ya, I do know with google, they would use custom encoding chips that are made for latency, under a more controlled back and front end things become better.

It’s just for chrome cast and chrome users. I think this is great. I’m in a spot where I might want to play new games on my laptop, but I don’t have the horsepower to run them, and I don’t want a desktop. This can run and stream at 1080p 60fps. Really knocks the socks

Unless they can fix latency by magic its pointless....

As far as im concerned, and some people will hate me for this, they can stream the games at 30FPS 1080p with very good quality and as low latency as possible and then use motion interpolation software on the receiving end to smooth it out, but have framerate independend input at 60+ tickrate.

You dont benefit the same as 60 fps update but at least my brain wont get triggered by 30 fps, i feel dizzy watching 30fps.

I really hope they can make cloud gaming better, im kind of done making gaming PC's, they lock me down too much, cost too much, break too often, and i stopped caring, i love technology and hardware but its just too much to take care of.

In 5 years i expect to be able to stream games with decent input lag on my laptop.

Amen basically. I find the idea very interesting and it seems like they'll execute it well, but it more than likely does use Chrome specific APIs, so it isn't truly "for everyone". I'm also really interested and weirded out about how their revenue model looks like. They invited studios to make games that are computationally intense, which means I'm assuming it will run across a few of the Stadia nodes, so am I the end user going to pay more for a game that has to use more nodes. Like AWS pricing? Or am I just paying a subscription that somehow is high enough to balance out the crazy resource heavy games with ones that could run on like a single core.

Also not physically owning a game still makes me feel weird and I've questioned how the end times will play out for everyone. Like for Steam would they allow me to download everything before they shut down? On my PS3 is there some magic way of cloning the HDD to keep the games on it alive forever?

So depending on how literally google is willing to commit to it's "ever expanding" capabilities to deliver 4k 60fps (hopefully at high or max settings), I could be convinced to buy into this assuming the game library is basically the same as steam aka all the major games and hopefully indies. For some this could replace the need to build a computer at all. I assume this will help kill consoles as well. Geforce Now, xbox game pass and playstation now have to play catch up and they started first.

I get the idea for some people, but for me I prefer not dealing with compression issues/latency.  Also, I like having the option to play offline.
