Apple reinvents headphone jack.. thinner iDevices on the way?

Apple has patented a shrunken-down headphone connector that shaves precious volume off existing 3.5mm and 2.5mm jack standards by reshaping the plug, thereby removing an inevitable limiting factor in its quest for perpetually thin smartphones. To Apple CDO Jony Ive's dismay, iPhones and iPads can only be as thin as their largest internal component, as evidenced by the "camera bump" on iPhone 6 and 6s. However, unlike the longstanding headphone jack format, camera technology benefits from component miniaturization trends, meaning future iSight modules will likely see size reductions in line with other iPhone innards. As an industry standard, the 3.5mm plug format is ancient compared to its high-tech iPhone component stablemates, and customers have shelled out hundreds or thousands of dollars on compatible hardware.

Hope they wont shrink battery even further.. I thought 3,5mm was a savior as everyone has to support it.. I had a 2.5mm jack on an old Nokia phone and it was not good..

Propriety headphones on the way!

Expensive Apple adapters on the way! Also, almost as expensive 3rd party adapters on the way!

Edit - No cheap 3rd Party adapters for a while. Because Apple.

What do you mean Apple will reinvent the headphone jack, they won't reinvent it, but rather claim they invented it themselves.

What do you mean Apple will reinvent the headphone jack, they WILL invent it.

They invent everything they make...

Agree, but could apple not make the connector out of 7000 series aluminium (notice I spelt it the correct way, damn yanks lol) why do they have to re-invent the wheel for everything when perfectly serviceable tech already exists

This looks like a brilliant way to have people accidentally break the phone's connectors, so that they can charge for repairs or sell more phones.

Not to mention the phone itself bending :D

Why wouldn't they just use the 2.5mm standard? They used to be common on the dumb phones and it is a full mm thinner then the common 3.5mm standard that is currently on all phones
