FCC: Cut the copper, switch to fiber

The FCC today imposed new rules on carriers that intend to turn off copper networks and replace them with fiber, but said that carriers should feel free to make the switch as long as they keep providing the same services to customers.As before, carriers still need approval from the FCC before shutting off copper networks in cases where they intend to reduce or discontinue service. "However, carriers will retain the flexibility to retire their copper networks in favor of fiber without prior Commission approval—as long as no service is discontinued, reduced, or impaired," the commission said in its announcement.

for the first time requires providers to directly notify retail customers—including consumers and businesses—of plans to retire copper networks at least three months in advance.

it have one downside for landline phones. While copper-based phones can continue to work during power outages. the commission voted in a separate item to require phone providers—including cable companies with VoIP services—to tell new and existing customers about this power limitation and offer the option to buy backup battery systems. Phone providers will have to offer an 8-hour backup to begin with, but within three years will be required to offer an option for 24 hours of standby power

 

 

Hope this wont effect the prices....now what will we use to call during a zombie Apocalypse or how will we ever get out of the matrix....

I'd really like it if they'd also start to do similar things in other countries. I for one (Netherlands) would like my ISP to replace all the shitty copper and upgrade it a bit (5Mbps down, 4.9KM from the dslam)

I highly doubt my isp will agree with that, they enjoy milking money out of us, we pay $50 for 3/1 since that's all I can get as the other isp with fiber filled my town with it and is starting the next town, and skipped my road. I mean, unless I pay 8k for them to run a line..

It would be nice if every ISP in the world ditched copper for fibre, but i don't see it happening. but at least some areas should go all fibre, since they get such lousy speeds.

It's not just the modem. Every piece of equipment along the line must also now have batteries.

 

Plus the battery has to be decent enough to last quite a while.

 

In power outages that lasted 2 or 3 days, traditional phones would still work.

My current provider is already laying their own fiber lines, not to the houses (At least not most of them), but their own fiber route to level 3, as they currently have their networks connect (in this area) to the actual internet, via an interconnect through Verizon's network.

 

This of course means it barely works. Every single night, everyone in my area gets a sudden drop to about 1/10th of their paid for speeds. According to what I've been told, if/when they ever get the fiber line laid down, our available speeds will double.

 

Their fiber line is apparently 1 year overdue, because they ran into some right-of-way problems despite having state permits for the entire line. Which doesn't make sense because all they're doing is cutting a trench a few inches wide and a few feet deep, laying a cable in it, and covering it back up.

 

God I hope they finish sometime soon. I would really like to not have my internet slowed down to worse than dial up speeds. I also hope Verizon just sells off their networks and leave the ISP game soon. They don't belong in it.

What a phenomenally silly, stupid, and wasteful thing to do.  How many people still have land lines that are actually hard wired to the wall, as opposed to being wireless, battery charged, hand held sets?  

 

Rather than being compelled to rent large, expensive battery back up systems, that will sit largely unused, why not let the phone companies either provide, or sell inexpensive battery powered phones, with a battery back-up receiver, to the people who do not already have them.

 

This is the sort of regulatory overkill, save-the-consumer-from-himself bureaucratic nonsense that will actually slow the adoption of fiber, by making the process more cumbersome and expensive for the provider.

Also, since the OP quote mentions that if power goes out, POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service by copper) still works, which may not actually be the case. Most telephone exchanges do have generator backups, but it isn't a guarantee, especially if those generators run off fuel such as propane or natural gas. In rural areas, propane storage tanks need to be constantly refilled on demand. Natural gas does tend to work 99% of the time, but if there is no power on a large enough scale, how is natural gas supposed to be pressurized and move on gas lines anyway?

 

Even though fiber needs an power supply at the node, most fiber interfaces have a built in battery pack, such as my Fios Optical Network Terminal.

Verizon also has fiber to fiber handoff network terminals if you chose to go that route. Those terminals are essentially an mini-node which provides TV, phone, and ethernet service from the headend.

That's not what they are talking about. On old copper phone lines the lines themselves are a completed circuit that provide power from the switchboard to the phone and provide the SIGNAL. For IP you have to have power at every leg of the journey from powered hub thru nodes to home where you ALSO need power for your internet reception box, modem, AND then whatever phone you would use. There is no power coming down the IP data line. You have to have redundant power provision for the entire trip AND for the home. Whereas with copper its inherently powered. If phone works it works, whether or not power is out for the region.

I wonder if this would open the door to individual/backbone co-ops? Neighborhoods or investors front the money to run hefty fiber connections to new areas and retain the ownership rights of their leg and lease out access or connection rights between ISPs and subscribers to recoup their outlay... ISP's don't have to front the money and winge on about it, any and every area could pony up the dough to get themselves bumped up to fiber and connect to the trunk lines.

Secondary source of power using telephone lines? not possible.. The lines cant carry huge power

 

They should use copper for telephone and fiber for internet. Makes much more sense to me. There is no point upgrading the telephone service to fiber if there's no audio quality gain etc. and particularly in this scenario where they'll need more money to provide each home with batteries for their telephone. Who is in charge of power over telephone lines anyway? Those things literally always have power

And Comcast will do this in... 5 - 10 years, at the minimum. Then jack up prices and make up some shitty excuse to justify the increase in price.

 

I want to at least like Comcast but their business ethic makes it so hard for me to do so. Too bad they're the only real option where I live, isn't it?

I live in australia. ADSL2+ is still a new thing, only a small amount of people have copper and its still shit. 100mb down and 2 up and it doesn't even reach those speeds. Not to mention this NBN fibre crap was meant to be finished by this year and has only just started. RIP
