Ireland Will Accept Selfies For Passport Photos

If you live in Ireland, you will soon be able to use a selfie as your passport photo. An ID card will be available for purchase in late 2015 that will let people travel around Europe without their normal passport. A card will be bought with an app that will also be used for a selfie and personal data entry. The selfies will be valid on the ID cards for five years.

 

The Irish government won't accept duck faces, altered or enhanced photos, or anything else affecting the selfies. As long as you can take a normal picture with your own camera, you should be fine using the government's app.

 

Irish citizens will buy this passport-like ID card for about $40. The card will only be used in the EU for normal travel but can also be used as a temporary replacement for a travel permit or passport. The card will be the same size as a credit card.

If your grave doesn't say "rest in peace" on it You are automatically drafted into the skeleton war.

I don't really see this issue with this though. It is very useful to not have a special photo taken. These days the camera's are good enough, so if you can make a decent pic I agree that it should be used.

I mean, if it was just any selfie you had in you album then obviously it would be a different matter. But seen as though they have a government app for it, that would presumably track facial movements etc. then i guess it saves the £5 they charge for passport photos...

Hmm, half the price of a standard passport, but half the duration of it as well. I might just stick to my 10 year passport for now..

What's with the criticism? A passport photo is essentially a selfie anyway. Besides how many of you have actually had to go through the process of getting a passport? It's ridiculously complicated and the rules on the photo are inane, many countries even make you go to a professional photographer to get it. It's about time this process moves past the 19th century.

who cares if its a selfie, as long as the photo meets identification requirements it doesnt matter how its took.

i like this, it the first time i see the selfie used in a non narcissist way, if it speeds up the shitty bureaucracy for legal documents i'm fine with it

So, let me get this right: They allow the term "selfie" to be applied to a passport photo, and yet same-sex marriage still isn't allowed. :huh:

My take is;   the whole purpose of a passport is to ensure authorities know who is leaving and who is entering a country.  If this system is as secure as drivers license or similar then for EU only I might actually be a good idea.   Even though governments do things we often consider to be pointless or stupid, there are logical arguments behind most of them.

 

Which leads me on to a more important question, @Victorious Secret,  if Hitler had to take a selfy before invading Poland, what would it look like?

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
