iLostMyXbox21

I think this should be a status update.

Anyways, people buy skins because they wanna look cool (the default skin doesn't look that great).

Because why not? If its a good looking clothing skin for your character in a game that you play alot, don't see a reason not to spend some cash if you have some to spare.

Epic Games has created very successful, and very toxic, culture in their games. If you don't have a skin, you'll be ridiculed and not taken at all seriously in a game, even if you're a top player. It's similar to how Supreme, BAPE, Off-white, Yeezy, etc are able to sell their clothing at ridiculously high prices. Also, like it or not, partly because the game is free, the main player-base of Fortnite is young children and teenagers. They often don't have a very good sense of how much something should cost, and they don't think about how they're paying real money for ones and zeroes on Epic Game's servers. In the age of microtransactions, it's often more profitable to use the Razor and Blades Model. Give them the razor, sell them the blades, or in this case, give them Fortnite, sell them the skins.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Because they want to show off to other people, and they have the money. Honestly I think this is monetization done right.

In search of the future, new tech, and exploring the universe! All under the cover of anonymity!

Exactly. Nobody is forcing you to buy a skin in Fortnite. In fact, some switch streamers have built their entire careers off of playing Fornite using a default skin, and surprising everyone when they are very skilled at the game. You probably won't be really bullied or ridiculed for using the default skin, but people respect you more, and treat you different if you have one.

This depends on country and culture. I was born in small slav country where cloths, phone and your car was a symbol of status. You won't believe that people with salary of 300-400 euros are taking a debt just to buy a shiny new Galaxy S9+ or some expensive AF jeans only because they want to look cool and rich.

Then I moved to Ireland where situation is completely opposite. People here could care less what phone to use as long as it can open instagram. Need new pants? Goes to Penneys, buys new pants for 10 euros - solved.

People around my age group (teens) are usually the ones who buy skins. Since their frontal lobe isn’t completely developed yet, they might not know the value of money and what they could use the money they spend on skins on something else more important. Nah just kidding it’s all for the clout fam

You could ask the same thing about TF2, and I as someone who has over 100 euro worth of items in my inventory, can say that it's because they're cool. That's it! You think they're cool, I think they're cool, other players think they're cool.

I do technically understand why people buy skins and emotes, though, personally, I think they're a bunch of fucking idiots for doing that. For 10 cents or something, sure, it might be worth it, but at the prices these things are sold at the moment, you could skip a few purchases and get a whole, actual new game for the money! What a waste of money to spend it on the "privilege" of getting to don some textures on your character..

Isn't the game free?

I know lots of people that will buy in game items in a game they really enjoy simply to support the developer. After all, if no one purchased anything at all, there'd be little to no reason to put out another game, updates, etc.

Also to most people I know $10 isn't really much at all to toss at a few skins.
