Battlefield V Battle Royale Mode 'delayed' until March 2019

DICE and EA revealed the content roadmap for Battlefield V and it shows that the Battle Royale mode will not come at launch but rather March 2019.

My Thoughts: I basically agree with the authors final thoughts, I think it's a huge missed opportunity to not launch the game with Royale, especially when it is the flavour of the month type of mode so timing is everything. Many people think this game will be very bare bones at launch and the fact that Black Ops 4 has launched with their Royale mode and has been such a success makes this development even worse for DICE and EA. So yeah, I don't even know how popular BR modes will be when this game launches in 6 months time and it could affect the overall performance of this latest Battlefield title. 

 

I think it's also a fascinating look at the industry and how publishers all try and cash in on each others trends, copy and paste game modes and timing is everything when it comes to that. Your thoughts?

I have to be honest here, I expected nothing less. This is such an EA move to make. They wanted all the preorders. When they got enough money, they just ditched the  game mode that made the game sell in the first place.

Doesn't bother me. I haven't yet decided whether to get Battlefield 5 (because Bf1 was so dumbed-down and superficial), but if I get it it won't be to play BR, or single-player, for that matter. Just Conquest, as always.

I still have no idea why anyone would want a Battlefield Battle Royale. The entire concept of that game mode is counter to what Battlefield does best.

Unfortunately that term is associated with greedy publishers. I actually like the idea of a live service and a game that changes over time but it's usually a way of extorting their customers for more money.

Ubisoft had Divison with 2 years of free DLC updates that asked zero cash, same with Ghost Recon and R6 where you can buy the skins and operators using in-game money or buy a 2nd year or 3rd year season pass, also same with for honor having weekly updates and season updates with zero cost and an option to buy stuff if you want. and all the things i mentioned above has something called started edition where you can get the game for 10 bucks and grind more. live service is not all bad when its done right.

Live service is bad no matter how it's handled. Do you honestly believe that in 10 years time Ubisoft will still be running servers for any of these games? Games people could easily have spent multiple hundreds of pounds on? Games they're selling cosmetics for, seasons passes & dlc for, lootboxes and other microtransactions for.

 

And when Ubisoft decide they don't want to spend the money running the servers anymore it all disappears without a trace. It's the equivalent of a Microsoft issuing a software update to disable all hardware older than 10 years old simply because they don't feel like supporting them anymore.

DICE already drove most of their fan base away with the idiotic design changes to the game (medic is ruined), as well as the SJW rhetoric and one of their marketing guys saying "if you don't like it, don't buy it". Because telling your customers to fuck off is always a great idea.

 

Everyone I know who plays Battlefield is not planning on playing V. Most of us are playing WW3 on steam or one of the older Battlefield games. Although I'm sure DICE/EA will be quick to shut those down because "money" or "we need the infrastructure".

you're talking about if For honor, Divison, wildlands and Ghost recon and Rainbow six Seige servers? these are entirely online multiplayer games, so debating if they have servers for them in 10 years for a multiplayer game seems like a moot point your trying to reach. it doesn't matter if they are live services games are not, they are gonna pull the plug if no one is playing them.

 

All of the Live service's games i mentioned have cosmetics that you can buy with in-game money, you don't have to spend a dime on them, optional microtransactions is why games like Divison, R6 and wildlands and For honor are even getting 2nd year and 3rd year new DLC's every 4 months with zero cost to the player who bought the base game, R6 is on the way to 4th year, you think Ubisoft out of their hearts still working on 4th year DLC for a game that came 3 years ago? or 2nd year update for For honor and working on 3rd year DLC's for a game that came almost 2 years ago? do you think Divison is still getting DLC updates even after Divison 2 was announced because they cared for thier customers? if there weren't people who are buying Microtransactions, R6 would have been dead the first year as its launch was horrible, DIvsion almost died in the first 6 months, Wildlands and For honor wouldn't have any player base at all if no one spent on MT's, that is what i meant by if handled correctly, Live services are not BAD if handled correctly. at the end of the day i'm more than happy that i don't have to spend a dime with real money and have a player base that is alive.

that is true for ANY game of ANY company if they don't want to spend thier money running a server with less than 1000 people playing on it on a MP online only game, you wouldn't too if you had a company.

 

Games like Far cry and AC aren't live services and you can play them offline, so saying what if they decide to pull plug on a game that anyone has been barely playing makes no sense to me, that isn't the problem with live service, live services and keeping an online-only game are not the same thing.

All of the Live service's games i mentioned have cosmetics that you can buy with in-game money, you don't have to spend a dime on them, optional microtransactions is why games like Divison, R6 and wildlands and For honor are even getting 2nd year and 3rd year new DLC's every 4 months with zero cost to the player who bought the base game, R6 is on the way to 4th year, you think Ubisoft out of their hearts still working on 4th year DLC for a game that came 3 years ago? or 2nd year update for For honor and working on 3rd year DLC's for a game that came almost 2 years ago? do you think Divison is still getting DLC updates even after Divison 2 was announced because they cared for thier customers? if there weren't people who are buying Microtransactions, R6 would have been dead the first year as its launch was horrible, DIvsion almost died in the first 6 months, Wildlands and For honor wouldn't have any player base at all if no one spent on MT's, that is what i meant by if handled correctly, Live services are not BAD if handled correctly. at the end of the day i'm more than happy that i don't have to spend a dime with real money and have a player base that is alive. 

 

that is true for ANY game of ANY company if they don't want to spend thier money running a server with less than 1000 people playing on it on a MP online only game, you wouldn't too if you had a company.

 

Games like Far cry and AC aren't live services and you can play them offline, so saying what if they decide to pull plug on a game that anyone has been barely playing makes no sense to me, that isn't the problem with live service, live services and keeping an online-only game are not the same thing. 

If it's true of any game then why can I go and play any game from pre 2014ish right now.

 

I'm not the one missing the point here, you are. They're making every game a live service these days and there's no real reason for it except greed. Single player will be dead by the end of the decade if these publishers have their way and it's only because of two reasons, microtransactions and control.

 

It's moot listing a group of live service games and then saying "these are online only games", the simple fact is they don't have to be. It's a design choice made purely out of greed.

 

If they're going to pull the plug then they shouldn't be selling them for full price with multiple season passes and cosmetics and lootboxes and microtransactions.

 

They want single player to die and everything to be live service so they can get away with charging players hundreds of pounds every year, if there's no single player then there's no reason to play xxxxx 2018 when xxxxx 2019 is released.

 

You say no company wants to spend money on servers for games no one plays yet it's their choice to run the servers at all. Traditional single player with multiplayer that runs via dedicated servers has worked for 15 to 20 years. It's their choice to change that, not ours.
