Nvidia Stock Down/ Morgan Stanley Pessimist

Very unsure about where to put this thread, so moderators can move if it doesn't fit in this forum section.

 

According to CNBC, Nvidia stocks are down due to Nvidia's failure to meet performance expectations.

 

Quote

As review embargos broke for the new gaming products, performance improvements in older games is not the leap we had initially hoped for,” analyst Joseph Moore says.

 

Stanley Morgan analyst further added:

Quote

"Performance boost on older games that do not incorporate advanced features is somewhat below our initial expectations, and review recommendations are mixed given higher price points."

 

In an article released by Market Insider, they quoted the same analyst who stated the following:

 

Quote

"With higher clock speeds, higher core count, and 40% higher memory bandwidth, we had expected a bigger boost."

My opinion: Well this is to be expected I think. However, I also think Nvidia will be able to maintain a competitive edge in the gaming realm. Well, until we see AMD's 7 nm anyways...

Honestly I think the stock will bounce back with the quadros. I think they will make a fair bit of money off those and they will likely still increase profit. It will be interesting if the sales of the 20 series will be good enough to warrant the stock bouncing back as well.

So this is why nvidia is so strict with its embargoes and NDAs.

 

My guess is this will be a short temporary drop resulting from the current underwhelming reviews, and that their share price will soon bounce back.

Realistically NVIDIA doesn't have any competitors in the high end consumer market. Even if people aren't buying the rtx 2080/ti, they'd still be buying nvidia with the gtx 1080ti instead. (As opposed to losing sales to AMD)

A small smack to the face is needed. They will not hurt badly from that but I like it that they have been told by numerous sources that the performance delta isn't on par with the price increase especially considering that the new tech is MIA for now :D

Embargos was mainly to cash in preorders. This stock price drop would probably been avoid if they were upfront with the 20 series performance.

Sort of confirms what I've been saying: Yes Nvidia does profit from the high end products but for the consumer market at least, they're not their main money earner, the low and mid tier cards are. The high end cars should be part of their business just to give em the performance crown because that's the way people work: they might not be able to afford a high end car but they will settle for the next best thing if made by the same company just on the reputation of the high end models alone.

 

Nvidia has forgotten this by putting their Titan prices on Geforce products and there's going to be people ready to remind them than yes: there is such a thing as getting too greedy even in the almost complete absence of a competitor on the consumer market.

I think the analysts are right to be pessimistic.... but not because of performance.  Think they are off about that. The issue here is price.  Sales will not come in as expected in the short term.  If these were priced more appropriately AND 10 series were also knocked down in price then things would be a little more optimistic.

Honestly , i wasn't surprised at all by turing's performance when it came out. Given what we knew and the generational perf bumps we had been getting since kepler , a 30% jump at the high end was to be expected.

 

Nvidia kind of bit themselves in the ass on this one . The product performs good , but they were so agressive with their marketing , advertising 50% , 2x jumps etc in optimized software that the expectations were simply too high

I mean morgan stanley is correct somehow. Nvidia made a product that might push the boundaries of current gen videocards but they cannot deliver the expected performance increase in traditional games at a reasonable price. Therefore the new cards directly compete with last gen until raytracing takes over which is still gonna take quite a while I believe.

You can get away with jacking up prices, you can get away with barely delivering on performance, but doing *both* at the same time is bound to deliver mixed results, at best.

Let's say i go out and buy a 2080 and my room mate has a 1080ti what would the performance difference be?... ray tracing isn't being used in any games out right now and when it does end up being used it will have a performance toll because the cards are too weak to pull it off at the acceptable frame rates that someone willing to spend $839 on GPU is accustomed to.

Considering the high was 268 and the low was 264 and the screen shot at 2% down was 266,  the only thing we can determine is that the stock is at average value for that period.   It's still $30 a share higher than the average share price for the last 6 months.

Honestly, while I still think RTX 20 is not a good value proposition for many of us, after having some discussions with others, there is a little theory I came up with that explains the high price.

 

Perhaps the RTX 20, despite its marketing saying otherwise at times, might actually be targeted moreso towards game developers and early adopters whilst Pascal remains for the general gaming market in particular due to its supply surplus.

 

In a way, the higher pricing, while still not good for consumers, does somewhat mix in with that theory.

I'll just wait for the 1080ti to drop on the 400$ bracket or for AMD to release a card with the same performance of the 1080ti in that bracket
