LG releases budget G7 at IFA: LG G7 One

suicidalfranco

LG-G7-One-01.png

At IFA this year, outside of their push for AI with ThinQ on every electro-domestic you can think off, LG too k the chance to also introduce a new phone to their lineup, the G7 One, a cut down version of the G7 coming at half the price, and as the name might imply, Android One.

So what's the difference with it's older sibling?

Quote

LG G7 One vs. LG G7 ThinQ – what’s the same:

  • 6.1-inch Super LCD Display with notch
  • 3,000mAh battery
  • Expandable storage
  • IP68 rated for dust and water resistance
  • MIL-STD 810G certified for sturdiness
  • Hi-Fi Quad DAC audio for headphones
  • Dedicated Google Assistant button for fine AI control

What’s different on the LG G7 One:

  • Android One
  • Snapdragon 835, down from 845
  • 4GB of RAM (with no 6GB option)
  • 32GB internal storage only
  • Single-shooter, dropping the secondary wide-angle lens
  • 156g, dropping 6g
  • Two colors only
  • Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, dropping from 4.0

Other changes include a brushed glass back like we've seen earlier this year on the one plus 6, frankly should have gone with plastic or any polymer other like Xiaomi did with the their Poco F1, and a starting price tag of 499$.

As far as looks, that's not half bad.

I see they joined the notch club as well.

I'm going to assume " Hi-Fi Quad DAC audio for headphones " means a 3.5mm jack.

This is basically them getting rid of SD 821 and 835 leftovers from G6 / V30 while pleasing the community. Mixing business with pleasure.

I'd say that's a fair assumption. Haha.

they joined that club in may with the G7.

And yes, at least it still has the beast DAC & AMP combo that i'll be missing out from now on.

Loved it on my V10, gave me that little push to move from the HD600 to the HD660S

It still has a headphone jack, nice. But I can't stand these phones that have a notch and a bottom bezel, why not just move the screen down and have a top bezel so there isn't a stupid screen notch?

Majority of the world isn't in the US or on Verizon

Essential Phone is also at about $300

Just saying

That said if the G7 One can be had for under $400, thats still a good price in my books

But that still means no one will be paying $300 in US bills for a Pocophone.  You're either paying for it in rupees (because you're an India resident) or probably paying a premium to get it.

And the Essential Phone is also more than a year old; it sold for $700 when new.  Yeah, it's easy to sell a phone for $300 when it's effectively on clearance, using last year's parts.  That's not a slam against it -- I have one on my desk.

Why have a notch when you have a chin bar that damn big. It's like other designers saw what Apple did and thought they did it because they liked how it looked. It's one of the biggest compromises I've ever seen Apple do.

Are you confusing it with Android Go? That's the cut-down version. Android One is stock android for non Google devices, devices such as this. The thing is that OEMs can still install their apps, but you won't be getting their skin, and you'll be getting updates directly from Google.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Isnt Android One a stock android program that aims to deliver updates for phones within the program for X ammount of years?

It looks like a slightly better Nokia 6.1 plus. Has all the things Nokia was missing for probably a slightly increased cost. Not bad

Its releativly simple to mix them i suppose.

Android one does have some minimum specs to be qualified. Which is great to set a standard within the program and give those phones good reputations

$400+ is budget? Umm, no, thats mid-range. Budget is $250 or less. Mid-range is $250 to $600. High-end/premium is $600+

I can't believe how handy that is on my G6. I have a $600 camera, but will sometimes choose my phone's camera over it for the wide angle lens.

A little off topic, how do you like the Essential Phone? Was thinking about picking up one myself.

$400 is a budget, yes. They didn't say low budget. It's a budget phone compared to something of a flagship caliber.

Budget is inherently meaningless as it is really relative. To me, the base Note 9 is budget.

Why did LG give up on V10 second screen design and go for the x$*# notch,

still good to have Hi-Fi Quad DAC for lower end phone.

LG needs to go back to much cheaper budget / flagship phones
