Valve announces CS:GO FREE Edition

Valve has announced CS:GO Free Edition in their latest patch notes.

 

CS:GO Free Edition is a very basic cut down version of CS:GO.

 

The main features of CS:GO Free Edition are:

As someone who paid for CS:GO, I'm not sure how to feel about CS:GO Free Edition. It definitely strikes me as an odd choice to release a cut down version of the game for free. I understand why they didn't include multiplayer in the free edition but the result means it has little to no use outside of a very specific niche.

 

Hopefully in time it'll become more apparent why this Edition of the game needed to exist.

Hardest part about selling any product is just to get customers looking at the product. They're making a free edition in hopes that it leads to more sales of the paid edition.

Winrar been doing it for years.

I like the idea of demo/free/trial versions of game to give potential customers an idea of how the game is and to experience the core of the game for themselves. I bought CSGO myself in a Counter-Strike package for like $15 which included 1.6, Condition Zero, Source, & Global Offensive, after I watched a bunch of the 2017 Eleague Major.

It would have definitely had been nice to have had a free version so I could taste a bit of the gameplay before fully committing.

CS:GO is also a major competitive esport. That brings a LOT of viewers, so making the "tv" client free should have been done a while ago.

it sucks they don't have this available for lan MP play because itd be great for lan parties where people may or may not own the game

 

however the only reason this exists is to boost gotv viewer numbers when compared to twitch. too bad gotv consumes much more resources and the caster voices sound like WWII tank radios

I remember that previously when you wanted to play competitive you had to buy a competitive pass for 19.9€, but right now i can access it, so maybe they have made it free? Yes. There are Tournaments weekly for the esport, and in-game viewing offers things Twitch viewing doesn't.

Team Fortress 2, outside of inventory space, being able to trade properly (you can trade items you've acquired from trades but nothing that you created in your inventory), certain drops (hats and tools like paints and Name Tags) and the lack of being able to play the Competitive game mode, is basically fully featured as a F2P version.

CS:GO Free is the exact opposite, basically.

Maybe because I've yet to play online with the game... But the community I was with for CSS is long gone now and have not bothered looking for a new one.

It's a good idea to be fair, I've had a few friends who have been 50/50 on whether to get CS:GO or not because they're not sure they'd like the game mechanics(recoil and other stuff) so this lets people get a feel for the game before actually having to commit to it.

 

At the same time tho it's normally only like £6-7 when it's on sale which it seems to spend more time on than off.

If you either don't have a phone number connected to your Steam account and your account is already Premium or a Competitive pass activated, it'll show you that you need to do one of the two things.
