A european has listed the threadripper 2990x for an affordable price of 1,509 euros. This puts it around $1,755 usd. The price could be a place holder, but with 32 cores, it won't be surprising if that price, is near the official price when it comes out.

AMD confirmed Threadripper 2000 series are coming to their enthusiast platform this summer. Only two parts were confirmed: 32-core and 24-core SKUs, but no names were given. The new listing would, therefore, confirm that 2990X codename, which was first mentioned by HKEPC, might actually be real.

Why is AMD calling it the 2990X? Last gen threadripper was the 1950x, so shouldn't it be a 2950X? The extra $500 gives you 50% more cores from last gen, so price wise, I think it's fair. I don't know if you get 50% more performance which would make the extra $500 worth it for sure if we do get double the performance. The most obvious thing that appeals to the add listing to the supposedly "real" SKU is the "Socket TR4 CPU Box" part, which I think could be just the box itself or just a pre-order. And plus, you get the new wraith ripper included, what more does AMD add to the value of this chip.

Wasn't the TDP supposed to be 250?

But at any case those are great specs for those who can afford this.

Some specs listed here (questionable): https://www.techradar.com/news/the-amd-ryzen-threadripper-2990x-leaks-out-as-a-32-core-64-thread-processor

It depends on how they approach the new line-up - it's possible that it's 2990X because they might leave the 1950X still in production and lower its price so they don't have to replace the 16C part.

Isn't it 100% more cores for 50% extra cost?

The 2950X part will be for the new 16 core part, which is the actual "replacement" for the current 1950x. 2970x will be for the 24c part, and 2990X will be for the 32 core part.

So like a marketing strategy to reduce the price of the 1950x and make the "2990X" more appealing for high end enthusiast's who want like double the power and double the cores for a fair price while reducing the cost of their 1st gen threadripper line to make them look more appealing to the more budget portion of their HEDT platform.

Yeah, I think it might be like this. Or like @TVwazhere said above, both strategies seem valid in my opinion :)

That is a pretty fair and good price imo.

That price is absolutely nuts.

Just in Q2 2016 when Intel released the i7 6950X the 10c/20t CPU, its MSRP was $1700.

Now only 2 years later we got 32c/64t for the same price.

The reason for a 2990x could be due to that not they plan on having CPUs with 2 and 4 dies active so the 2950x would be the 16c like the same config as the 1950x but the 2990x and 2970x would be the 32c and 24c that us 2x more dies and don't directly compare to the 1950x.

The 29##x line up could be, This is my speculation.

2900x 8c

2920x 12c

2950x 16c

2970x 24c

2990x 32c

I'm waiting for Intel;s 8 core before I upgrade mine. Still gonna keep the 4790k in an mITX case though for a portable gaming rig since it'll still be decent for gaming for the foreseeable future.

So the 8/16 core threadripper CPUs from last gen are probably going to be like 2nd gen ryzen with an IPC boost, clock speed boost and lower latency, but just a rebrand of 1st gen skus along with the new ones.

Not Zen 2? The game's going to change when AMD get 7nm out and Intel don't have their counter ready.

I wouldn't call new dies a rebrand, they will use the new 12nm like the rest of 2### (besides the APUs), if they are rebrands the all of 2### (besides the APUs) are rebrands too.
