I think it was out a long time ago, but it was not labelled as 4K in the past....

We always want videos on YouTube to be available in the highest quality possible, as creators intend. In December of last year, we announced support for 1080p, or full HD. At 4096 x 2304 pixels, 4K is over four times the size of 1080p. To view any video in a source resolution greater than 1080p, select "Original" in the video quality pulldown menu:

You're a bit late buddy, its been on youtube for sometime now.

This information is useless to 98% of the people here

Not necessarily, even if you use a 1080p monitor the higher bitrate will improve your quality.

99% of the people posting in 4k didn't film it in 4k, only rendered it in 4k, and the amount of people that can actually watch it in true 4k (with 4k monitors/tv's) isn't that many, I think it's cool they unveiled it, but the amount of people that can actually USE are numbered. Maybe this'll speed up prices dropping for 4k monitors soon :)

I want one really bad, I may save up and get one if they're ever ~1000-1500 for good quality brand name after I finish my build log

Record it and render it in 4k and it will be 4k when you upload it.

Original quality would stream at whatever your bandwidth could handle if I remember right, not just 4k

No, original was just the quality that it was uploaded to their servers, but completely independent of your bandwidth (unfortunately).

I really wish youtube had quality options as well as resolutions, so people with fast internet connections can watch the videos in higher quality, and the people with slow internet connections but who want to watch in HD can turn the bitrate down and resolution up.

4K may not be big yet, but YouTube is just getting ready for the inevitable slow shift to higher resolutions now.

Knew I shouldn't of listened to the guy on IRC that told me that when I asked him about it lol

Tyvm for clearing that up, but yeah, I hope 4k is more mainstream someday soon, I'd really like a 4k screen.

4k is not 4 times the resolution on 1080p..... 4k is 3840x2160. 1080p is 1920x1080. 4k is twice as much as 1080

Ok, multiply the numbers together. 3840x2160=8,294,400 pixels 1920x1080=2,073,600 pixels. 4k has 4 times as many pixels as 1080p, or double each dimension.
